Sunny, Stylish, Summer

As summer is approaching, it’s time to take over the beach. Since you will spending most of your time outdoors, it is necessary to have the appropriate accessories to achieve summer style perfection. First off, the right pair of sunglasses will increase your wardrobe to the max. There are a variety of sunglasses from the classic Ray Ban aviators to the retro cat-eyed floral and even heart shaped sunglasses. All of these shades will protect your gorgeous eyes from the glaring sun as well as accentuate your chilled-out vibe in which the summer creates. Once you spot the flawless pair of sunglasses, you will need a place to store them while catching some waves at the beach; hence the need for the big, wondrous beach bag. The ultimate goal of the beach bag is roominess that way all of your items from headphones to towels to flip flops have room to breathe. Also, beach bags should be colorful that way in comparison to the light colors of the sand and beach chairs, you will stand out. So, this summer it’s time to let loose and say goodbye to school and hello to the warm sun-kissed breeze of the new season.

Runway To Hallway

Summer is the season to let go and be free. It’s the season to express your style and show the world who you are. On the runway a few months ago, the trends for summer were amazing! Even though we won’t be walking down the hallway this season, we can still strut our stuff anywhere we go with these tznius and fashionable trends. Runways are very overwhelming for most people; there are so many different looks. Thanks to Storm Style, there is no need to stress over the runway. We have managed to break the summer runway down into four trends and colors. Not only do we spot the trend, but we hand pick tznious and affordable clothing that match it. Use this as a guidline or inspiration to make summer yours!

Military

Who said you need to join the military to own this look?

Screen Shot 2015-05-22 at 10.00.36 AM

There was an abundant amount of military styled clothing on runway this season. Almost every designer  showed off this trend. This kind of clothing is somewhat uncomfortable for the summer, though. Try wearing more light clothing: like an army green maxi or a button down. If you really want to go all out, splurge on a utility jacket!

Yellow

What’s summer without some sun??

Screen Shot 2015-05-22 at 10.02.06 AM

Yellow will always be a color for the summer. It’s not every year that the runway agrees.  This season there was yellow galore! Try to incorporate some summer sunshine into your clothes. Try a comfy jelly sandal or a button down midi. Don’t let Florida’s summer showers put you down. Try a cute yellow umbrella to bring on the sunshine.

Polka Dots

Tune your inner Dalmatian.

There were many polka dots walking down the runway this season. Don’t be afraid to try the black and white pattern on your vacation. You can rock the spots in just about anything! Experiment pairing this pattern with one of the summer colors!

Red

These three designers among many others are setting summer on fire.

The runway was burning with red passion this season. Make summer even hotter with this statement color. You can wear red clothing, shoes, or accessories! Try accessorizing with  a red bandana. Wrap it around your head and  voila! It’s super easy and super cute. You can never go wrong with this color.

Safe Sun-filled Summer

With summer around the corner, outdoor activities are on everyones mind. But swimming, playing soccer, or just lying on the grass in your backyard all take place in front of the ever present sun. Thats why, this season, it is very important to have a layer of protection between you and the harmful UV ray lights. Besides a hat, the only thing that is protecting you from the sun is sun screen. In this article we will share with you the best sunscreen to use for this summer vacation.
For people with allergies, acne, or rosacea-prone skin, it is best to avoid sunscreen with preservatives, fragrances or alcohol or grease. This can aggravate the skin and exacerbate breakouts. Look for words like ‘oil-free’ and ‘non-comedogenic’ to ensure that you aren’t buying sunscreen with extra oil. And, since some acne medication may increase sun sensitivity, it is very important to apply sunscreen frequently throughout the day.
Kids with dry skin should try moisturizing sunscreens that have lanolin, oils, or silicons. These ingredients are the best way to go to ensure the best protection. Look for terms such as cream, lotion, or ointments on the label to know which product to buy.
People with sensitive skin should buy a very basic product without any extra ingredients or benefits. But, if you know you are prone to redness, buy a sunscreen that has a calming ingredient like green tea extract.
For people with fair skin, sunscreen with an SPF of 30+ is recommended for protection. It is suggested to re-apply the sunscreen every two hours after swimming or sweating heavily to ensure the best protection.
Although people with darker skin tan easily and rarely burn, it is still a necessity to apply sunscreen. A tan is still DNA damage from exposure to the sun so it is till necessary to apply sunscreen. One with darker skin can apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15+ which will protects you from 93% of the sun’s rays, but it is recommended to wear SPF 30+.
(Don’t get fooled by bottles that say SPF 100 though. The highest SPF that there is, that actually makes a difference, is SPF 50.)
So, throughout all your summer activities, remember to frequently apply a thick coat of sunscreen every two hours to ensure the greatest protection you can!
Have a great summer!

Easy Breezy Trends

This summer, many trends have emerged — specifically polo shirts, pixelated skirts, brown leather cross-bodies and wrap Soludos. Here’s how you can them pull off!

  1. PoloShirts-This preppy style shirt is a great option for summer days as it can be lightweight. The shirt adds the perfect amount of complexity to a simple outfit and can be found with many designs.
  2. Pixelated Skirts-Inspired by current technology, these skirts add a cultural dimension to everyday pieces. They function as both Shabbos and every day apparel.
  3. Brown Leather Cross-Bodies-As accessories that match every outfit, brown leather cross-bodies are necessary for summer. They are also just the right size to hold your everyday items, and can be brought anywhere from the beach to the airport for traveling.
  4. Wrap Soludos-You can pair these sandals to any outfit to add effortless style. Wrap Soludos come in numerous colors and they are able to work with everything. They are also good summer shoes because they are open on the sides and allow air on any hot day.

*A styler’s tip: These four pieces can be combined to create an incredibly chic summer outfit.

Wise Words of Modest Mili

Dear Modest Mili,

I am in desperate need of sunglasses for summer, but I don’t know which shape will look best on my face.

Please help!

Love,

Shades for days

Dear Shades for Days,

People with oval faces are very lucky because almost all sunglass frames look good on them. People with round faces look good in rectangular or square frames because they mask the width of their cheekbones. Additionally, square and rectangular frames can make your face look longer. People with triangular faces should be very careful when choosing sunglasses. They should not wear sunglasses with large lenses because that will make their face look very small.

Much Love,

Modest Mili

Dear Modest Mili,

What is the best way to achieve those gorgeous beachy waves without having to actually go into the ocean, or even step foot on the beach?

Thanks,

Ocean Hater

Dear Ocean Hater,

DIY Beach Wave Hair Spray or DIY Surf Spray works great to get nice beachy waves without getting wet and salty at the beach. Another way to get beachy waves would be to twist and dry your hair from root to tips for pretty beach waves. Some people use a straightening iron to create beach waves; however, I find that time consuming and quite difficult.

Good Luck,

Modest Mili

Dear Modest Mili,

I’m so happy I can finally transfer to fun summer nail polish colors. What are the hottest new colors, and what outfits should I pair each with?

Love,

Polish Professor

Dear Polish Professor,

Salty water happy by Essie is a light blue that works perfectly for the summer. Saltwater happy looks best when worn with a white shirt. Sunset sneaks is a pinkish/redish color, and it looks great when wearing a black or gold dress. Fiji is a color by Essie that works in every season; it is a light pink that goes with everything. Play date is a light purple by Essie that looks best when worn with a floral dress or shirt.

Xoxo,

Modest Mili

Dear Modest Mili,

I cannot wait to buy tons of summer sandals, but I cannot decide which types of sandals to wear with certain outfits. I need some clarification.

Thanks,

Sandy Sandals

Dear Sandy Sandals,

Gladiator sandals look good with a flowy dress or skirt. Backless, flip flop sandals are great for the beach because they are easy to take on and off. Wedged open toed heel sandals look best with a nice pencil skirt.

Much Love,

Modest Mili

DIY: Healthy Grapefruit Popsicles

Summer temperatures can often get in the high nineties, especially in Florida! If you want a cold treat, but you don’t want to waste your calories on ice cream, try these light Popsicles instead!

You’ll need a Popsicle mold for these, if you don’t have one, you could improvise with an ice-cube tray & make flavored ice cubes to throw in plain water.

Ingredients: grapefruit juice (try not to get the super sugary kind) , Pink Lemonade or any light (clearish) fruit juice & a slice or two of fresh grapefruit per popsicle.

– First place your slice(s) of fresh grapefruit juice into each Popsicle mold
– Next mix the grapefruit juice and the fruit juice of your choice
– Pour your mixture into each Popsicle mold
– Put these in the freezer for about a half an hour
– Take the mold out of the freezer and add the Popsicle sticks to each Popsicle
– Freeze for about 3 more hours or until hard
– To get the Popsicles out of the mold, run the mold under warm water until they are able to pop out

Enjoy!

Letter from the Editors

There is an inherent connection between Springtime and freedom. The freedom to finally step outside after a long, cold winter – okay, so not in Florida. The freedom to take a nice break from schoolwork. The freedom to travel or spend time with family and friends. And from a Jewish perspective, as we celebrate Pesach in the Spring, the freedom from slavery in Egypt and the freedom we have as American Jews to lead our Orthodox lives in peace.

One freedom we value most above all in Storm Style is that of self-expression. What better a season to express ourselves – to wear the zany prints we secretly love, to experiment with pastels or bright colors, to buy those gladiator sandals we’ve been eyeing – than Spring.

We aim to accommodate your style needs this season as you maybe embark on a chic Spring Break getaway, meet up with friends at the Fontainebleau, or just dress for success at a family Seder. That’s why we’ve highlighted all the hottest trends for you to rock on your vacay and when you get back to school.

Check out our Lifestyle segment for awesome Spring recipes. Our brilliant baker Dalya has delicious and easy desserts and snacks – and they’re all Kosher-for-Passover!

This season, live, dream, and express freely. Celebrate your freedom. Do what you love, wear what you love, and never be afraid to try something new!
