Surviving The Heat
Summer is just moments away, and with it come seemingly endless days of fun, relaxation, and…heat. We Floridians know all about heat. Scorching sunshine, warm stale breezes, and indescribable humidity that feels like a too-heavy blanket. But the truth is, wherever you spend your summer, uncomfortably warm weather is unavoidable. Staying modest when the sun is blazing can be a challenge, but there are ways to both stay cool and look cool all summer long.
Dress for success: Long, flowy maxi skirts are a great way to stay chill when the temperatures begin to rise. Look for light summery colors and pair with loose three-quarter sleeve tops that will keep those balmy breezes (yeah, right) circulating.
Plan your day wisely: Fresh air is good for you, even in the summer, so definitely try to get outside a little. But only a little. If you absolutely HAVE TO be outside, make sure to go swimming often and stay hydrated. Then reward yourself with a long shower and spend the rest of the day in your cold, air-conditioned house.
And if neither of those work…
Mind over matter: This trick was a gift from my father, who taught me to “think warm” on our long walks to shul in the snow (no, I didn’t grow up in Florida). I’m not sure if thinking warm actually worked, but I am pretty sure that having a positive attitude can really turn things around.
So, as your last final exam ends and your summer begins, remember to stay cool, think cool, and keep a positive attitude! Have an enjoyable and meaningful summer.

Spring 2014
Letter From the Editors
We are so excited to present the first issue of Storm Style! How appropriate that our first edition explores trends and tips specifically for spring, the season of rebirth and new beginnings. This publication began as a question: How can we translate avant-garde to school-wearable fashion, let alone keep those outfits modest? We’ve created Storm Style not only as a style guide but also as our interpretation of that shift from vibrant high-fashion runway to Weinbaum’s humble hallways.
Fashion is defining one’s feelings–getting out of bed, selecting an outfit that fits your mood (maxi skirts on Mondays, anyone?). Fashion is expression: from color to length to pattern, what you wear–whether you like it or not–defines you in some way. Fashion is culture: the time period you live in, its transformations and progressions. We therefore hope that Storm Style will continue to grow over the years and develop into another staple among our school’s many publications.
We could not have completed this issue (or have gotten Storm Style off the ground!) without our hard-working staff. Much thanks to our writers, editors, and technical staff! Without your pieces, effort, and time, Storm Style would still just be a question. Thank you so much to the ever-stylish Mrs. Zisquit, the best faculty advisor we could ask for. Finally, thanks to you–our inspiration, our target. We hope you appreciate this publication as much as we do and utilize these ideas to freshen up your wardrobe and brighten your high school days!
Your Editors-in-Chief,

Nail Art
There’s only one place in Los Angeles where countless A-listers go to get their nails done–Esnail Salon. The “Es” in Esnail stands for ‘elegant satisfaction’ and that’s exactly what you’ll feel after getting pampered at this legendary salon. Various celebs ranging from Kim Kardashian to Ashley Benson make appointments at this prestigious spot to relax, have their nails done, squeeze in a quick wax, or maybe even lengthen their eyelashes. Director and Executive Manager, Aiko and Miho, don’t consider nail art to be mere decoration; instead they see it as a part of daily fashion. Opening their first salon in Shibuya, Tokyo in 2003, they have continued to grow their business and satisfy customers. Even though nail art is relatively new to the States, it has been the style in Japan for generations. Nail art has evolved immensely since its start as more and more artists have created fresh and upcoming designs. Now, nail art ranges from gems and rhinestones to nail piercings. All over the world, we are seeing new aspects of nail art and new flavors and designs nail artists are bringing to the table. Below, you’ll see designs from Esnail salon in L.A. along with my personal designs. I hope this article inspires other girls to try out new designs on their nails and remember–no matter the outcome, keep painting!
Fit for Spring
Spring’s Hottest Accessories
Statement necklaces and midi rings are a major fashion trend this spring. Seen on top design runways, these trends can be also be transformed for everyday attire. Chunky necklaces and chains can be paired with simple patterned shirts, while floral necklaces can spice up a basic colored shirt. Midi rings have become a favorite with the fashion forward set on both coasts. Jeweled and colored bands add sophistication and simplicity to any outfit whereas studded rings can add more of an edge.
Try it: pair a pink floral necklace with a bright shirt for an ultimate spring look.
Use midi rings to enhance your freshly painted nails.

Modesty and Beauty
“Beauty is being the best possible version of yourself on the inside and out” -Anonymous
The Gemara relates the story of when Caesar’s daughter met Rabbi Yehoshua Ben Chananya. Rabbi Yehoshua was widely known for both his erudition as well as his ugliness. When the princess first saw Rabbi Yehoshua she was appalled and asked him, rather tactlessly, “Why are you SO ugly? How could someone so scholarly be so unattractive?”
Rabbi Yehoshua gave a strange answer, which seemed as if he was dodging her question. He replied, “What sort of vessels does your father, Caesar, keep his wine in?” The princess answered, “Caesar stores his wine in clay pottery”. Rabbi Yehoshua retorted, “Is pottery fitting for a king?! Certainly a king should keep his wine in gold and silver vessels!”
Upon hearing this the princess realized how common it was to keep wine in pottery and immediately had all of her father’s wine transferred into vessels of royalty– gold and silver. A while later, when Caesar requested a drink, he tasted the wine and it was spoiled. All of his wine was spoiled! Caesar demanded an explanation. All of his staff faulted the princess, and the princess faulted Rabbi Yehoshua ben Chananya.
It was with this that Rabbi Yehoshua finally answered the princess’s original question. He explained, “When the vessel becomes more important than what it contains, it spoils its contents.”
With this the princess understood. There is inherent value to beauty; however, external beauty must serve the purpose of enhancing internal beauty and not overpowering the inner beauty and detracting from it.
The purpose of dressing with style should be for the sake of modesty. As intelligent Jewish girls, no one should want to be judged on face value. We want people to see our external selves and be intrigued to look further at our even more beautiful internal selves. Style is a tool used to create depth. Perhaps the quote we began with was actually authored by none other than Rabbi Yehoshua.
