Game Plan for Success

Crisp notebooks, freshly sharpened pencils, and clean backpacks. For me, those things represent the excitement of the new school year: a chance to begin anew, to show my teachers and myself what I am really capable of. No matter what has happened in the past, each new year is a fresh start. But how do we ensure that in a few months the notebooks will be full, the pencils worn down, and the backpacks still full of well-used textbooks?

As individuals, we are each about to approach G-d and ask for many things: health, success, wisdom, and more. In turn, we commit to change, to become better spouses, parents, and children. How will we stay dedicated to following through on those commitments?

As a school we have kicked-off our year as well. With an inspirational selichot program, college and Israel night, and the first Wednesday night seder, we have set the tone for this year.  We are committed to academic, spiritual and personal growth. Again, how will we guarantee success in all of these areas?

Every Friday night during Kabbalat Shabbat we say, "sof ma'aseh bemachshava techila", the end result is dependent upon planning first. In order to ensure success, we need to carefully consider our goals. We can't just show up at a program and hope for it to make an impact. We have to go with a plan in mind. The more we think about what our goals are for this year - personal, academic, or otherwise - and what our plan is to attain them, the more successful we will be, in both the short-term and the long-term.

While the excitement of all these kickoffs will soon wane, our personal plan of action will sustain us throughout the year and ensure our continued success.

Wishing everyone a Shana Tova, and may all of our tefillot be answered.

Saturday Night Selichot

Feeding the Body, Nourishing the Soul

Last Saturday night's pre-Rosh Hashanah selichot program was a raging success. As WYHS students walked into the Chabad of Ft. Lauderdale, they were presented with a delectable array of food. After nourishing their physical bodies, they entered the main room of the shul to satiate their souls. Hedva Tirschwell ('13) began the service with an uplifting speech describing an inspiring athlete's story, which effectively kicked off the amazing night.

The students next viewed a video that described (in a voice-over that sounded suspiciously like Rabbi Houben's) the physical accomplishments of Oscar Pistorius, an Olympic and Paralympic athlete who has no feet, and the spiritual accomplishments of Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel, who overcame his "common" background and became a gadol ha'dor, despite being debilitated in his later years by Parkinson's disease. The students learned the limitless power of determination, and that they should always have the confidence that they can accomplish anything.

The program concluded with a story by Joseph Bensmihen (JB), who was born with cerebral palsy. The Canadian government classified him as "disabled" and placed him into a separate elementary school, which he found unacceptable. He fought the establishment, pushed himself to his limits and beyond, and eventually prevailed, managing to get into the school of his choice and graduate with flying colors. The students appreciated the lesson of self-confidence and resolve, and sat up just a little bit straighter as they recited their penitent selichot prayers. The night was rife with meaning and introspection, marking WYHS's most impactful selichot program yet.
