Access Hollywood

This past weekend, WYHS held its annual Shabbaton with our Hollywood families. Members of the Judaic faculty were hosted at homes throughout Hollywood for Friday night dinner. Following davening on Shabbat morning, WYHS faculty members delivered short classes giving the parents a taste of what their children are learning at school. This was followed by a festive luncheon that was attended by over two hundred people. The Shabbaton concluded with an enjoyable Seudah Shlishit filled with delicious food and singing hosted by Amy & David Lasko and Liz & Joel Brauser.

What is the goal of the WYHS Shabbaton in Hollywood?

  1. WYHS is extremely grateful to the members of the Hollywood community (as well as our other communities outside of Boca) for the additional sacrifice required in sending students on a 30 - 45 minute drive to and from the school. The annual Shabbaton is WYHS's way of saying thank you to the community.

  2. Most of our Judaic faculty members live in Boca Raton and rarely have the opportunity to see the communities in which their students reside. The Hollywood Shabbaton, which our staff enjoys immensely, provides great insight into the community.

At WYHS, we have an increased sensitivity to the Hollywood community. We continue to hold regular school events so that parents do not need to travel to Boca. These include one or two board meetings per year, Parent Nights Out, College Guidance presentations, parent parlor meetings and a weekly Sunday morning mishmar program.

As Rabbi Davis mentioned during his drasha on Shabbat morning, the Young Israel of Hollywood has recently formed a fund whereby members of the community are being encouraged (regardless of whether they have children in day school) to contribute funds that will be distributed to the various schools that Young Israel students attend (including WYHS). This is a major statement of support for which we at WYHS are extremely grateful.

WYHS would like to thank the Hollywood community for its gracious hospitality this past weekend. We also express our appreciation to Rabbi Davis, Rabbi Weinstock, Reva Homnick and the lay and professional leadership of the community for their deep commitment to WYHS and Jewish education throughout South Florida.

We look forward to continuing our partnership with the Hollywood community for many years.

Shabbat Shalom,

Mr. Shimmie Kaminetsky
Executive Director

Students Attend AIPAC's Annual Policy Conference

This past week I had the distinct pleasure of attending AIPAC's (America Israel Public Affairs Committee) annual policy conference.

I personally take part in AIPAC events because I know of no other organization that can secure 3.1 billion dollars a year for the state of Israel. It is an organization deeply committed to its cause and ranks as the third most effective lobbying group in the United States.

There are few words that can describe the sight of more than 13,000 pro Israel activists gathering to lobby for the United States-Israel alliance. It is truly an experience like none other. The AIPAC Policy Conference is the largest gathering of congress besides the state of the union address. It is truly inspiring to see America's leaders so involved and passionately invested in the welfare of the state of Israel.

The group I was a part of made every effort to make the most of this experience. We had the honor of meeting with 30+ congressmen and women, along with the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, the White House liaison to the Jewish community, and leading experts on all matters Israel.

Ultimately, the experience at AIPAC was enlightening, educational, and empowering.

Now Presenting...
Navi Class Reflects on its Study of Sefer Yehoshua

Written by Kimberly Kugelman ('14)

In Rabbi Houben's Navi class, we were given the opportunity to pick one concept that was particularly meaningful or memorable from our study of Sefer Yehoshua. Whether it was Yehoshua's dual role as a leader or Bnei Yisrael's transition from a life full of miracles to a more natural existence, our task was to incorporate a song or its lyrics into our presentation. From YouTube videos to original songs, cute skits to PowerPoints, the creativity that went into these projects was definitely something worth watching. We all had a great time spending the last week putting together these "mini lessons" and sharing with the class our perspectives and thoughts on the most important ideas from Sefer Yehoshua.
