So it Began...

This year, an exciting new event, Minute to Win It, was added to color war. Students attempted to complete tasks, which were based off of the popular TV game show, using household items in under a minute.  Whichever team completed the round first received a five second advantage in the following round.

Many of the challenges required the use of unconventional talents to complete. For instance, the students who participated in "Backflip" had to carefully balance twelve pencils on the back of their hands, flip them in the air, and catch ALL of them. In a similar challenge titled "Cantageous," students attempted to transfer three full soda cans atop three empty soda cans without using a table for balance.

A fan favorite from Minute to Win It was "Extreme Hanky Panky" where challengers attempted to complete the seemingly easy task of simultaneously emptying two tissue boxes. Amidst a flurry of tissues and emphatic chanting, all teams were able to complete the event.

The dexterity displayed by the contestants of Minute to Win It greatly energized their teams early on.

The addition of this fantastic event to Color War really got the two-day program off to a great start.

Monday Night Madness

Traditionally, the Color War teams decorate both the two hallways and the staircase with the colors and theme that their team is.  This year proved to be no exception, as each team stayed after school Monday night to blanket their designated location with items related to their respective holiday. Team Pesach decorated the downstairs hallway with the Ten Plagues,  Team Sukkot erected an actual sukkah in the staircase and team Shavuot constructed their own Har Sinai upstairs.

final

By The Highlites Staff

What makes Color War at WYHS so unique is that it gives students' various talents a time to shine. The finale of Color War provided a platform to display these incredible abilities which ranged from nimble dance moves to artistic skillfulness.

The climactic session of Color War began with the first ever Boys Dance Competition. Flexible members of all teams trouped onstage and performed a dizzying array of dance moves to catchy salsa and hip-hop music. The tremendous applause following each performance validated the hours of rehearsal each team put into the inaugural dance-off.

This year's Color War banners were especially stunning, representing their respective team's meanings through the prism of art. Teams combined their artistic abilities with their knowledge of verses or sayings in the Torah to create beautiful pieces of art that will hang proudly in our halls for years to come.

The team theme songs, which require team unity and creativity, were especially impressive this year. The theme songs were expertly written to the tunes of popular songs, and each song had poignant lyrics about the concepts of the Shalosh Regalim and about the unified spirit of Color War.

Following the finale, students ate a pizza dinner and gathered together as teams for one last time to watch the Color War slideshow. Produced by the tireless efforts of Director of Technology Mrs. Claudia Cohen, Joshua Firestone ('13) and Amir Tsarfati ('13), the slideshow featured pictures that chronicled the events of Color War, from the introduction of the captains to moments just before the finale.

It was a well-fought battle and all three teams did great. Congratulations to the orange team, Team Shavuot, on winning Color War! A huge thank you to Shavuot captains Daneal Lugerner ('11), Adina San Solo ('11) and Elliot Danis ('12),  Sukkot generals Yedidyah Weiss ('11), Amanda Abady ('11) and Ross Nimhauser ('12), and Pesach captains Elie Genet ('11), Brooke Bienenfeld ('11) and Rashel Maikhor ('12).

We extend a major thank you to Mrs. Shira Englander, Rabbi Allan Houben, Mrs. Amy Horowitz for all the the time and energy they put in to making this such an amazing Color War!
