Bye Bye Birdie, Hello Amazing!
WYHS' Incredible Girls Musical
by LeeLee Borzak ('10)
To say that this years girls musical, Bye Bye Birdie, was "great" would be one the biggest understatements of 2009: it was unbelievable.
Under the expert guidance of Mrs. Elizabeth Saddler, WYHS' beloved English teacher and thespian guru, the twenty one person cast performed Bye Bye Birdie to a full house. During the intermission and after the show, the halls of the theatre were filled with audience members' expressions of awe and exclamations of "Oh my gosh this play is amazing!" as everyone marveled at the singing, dancing, and acting talent of WYHS girls.
As soon as the audience sat down, Principal Mrs. Kanner led the room in Tehillim, psalms, for our heroic Israeli Defense Forces who are bravely fighting in Gaza. Next, WYHS students were privileged to view an excellent introduction to the play, Bye Bye Birdie video "intro" expertly created by Director of Technology Claudia Cohen and the ninth grade videography class. From the second the first scene of the show started to when the actresses took their final bows, the girls looked like Broadway actresses. The cast, which consisted of seasoned theatre veterans and talented new faces, had dedicated countless hours of practice and rehearsal to the musical, and it truly paid off. The singing, the dancing, and the acting of these talented girls combined together to create a musical which was fun, exciting, and memorable for all. We may have waved goodbye to Birdie, but we certainly said hello to wonderful actreses.
Congratulations to the entire Bye Bye Birdie cast on one of the best plays WYHS has ever seen. A humongous thank you goes to Mrs. Saddler who never ceases to amaze us with her professional directing skills. And, a shout-out to the back stage crew who worked hard and kept things running smoothly. Can't wait to see the comedy in the spring!
