Coming to A Shul Near
You!
Spending Shabbat in the South Florida
communities in which our students live has
been a high priority
this year.
In the winter, the Judaic faculty
participated in Family Shabbatot in
Hollywood and North Miami
Beach, sharing meals with our students
and their families. A quarter of our student
body hails from
Hollywood, and Rabbi & Mrs. Davis'
youngest child is an outstanding member of
our Class of 2009. Some of our finest
students commute from North Miami Beach, home
of our principal, Mrs. Ora Lee Kanner.
This past weekend, the Judaic faculty and the
freshman class thoroughly enjoyed a
Shabbaton in
Galt Ocean Mile, a
community along the coast in Ft. Lauderdale
(between Oakland Park and Commercial
Boulevards). The energy and warmth reflected
in
Café Emunah
permeates the entire community.
In the fall, my family and I had the pleasure
of spending Shabbatot in Weston and Palm
Beach, where WYHS parents are the
gabbai and president (respectively) of
their shuls. This spring, we enjoyed the
hospitality of the
Boynton Beach and
Chabad Central Boca communities,
the later being home of our founding
president, Mrs. Pam Turk.
The emissaries of the Lubavitcher
Rebbe, the spiritual leaders of so many
of the communities we visited, are our
partners in the education of many WYHS
students. The friendship between their
rebbe and ours, Rabbi Yosef Dov
Soloveitchik, has continued with us, their
students. They have graciously welcomed us
into their homes and shuls.
Our school may be located in Boca Raton,
but all of South Florida is our home.
There were many who predicted that the
balance between Boca and non-Boca students
who become lopsided as the school grew. The
school has been 55% Boca; 45% non-Boca for
the last five years, and next year's freshman
class promises to be the same.

The Highlight of
Freshman
Year
The
Exciting Ninth Grade Shabbaton
by David Hopen
('12) and Rashel
Maikhor ('12)
This past Shabbat, the
freshmen finally experienced their highly
anticipated class Shabbaton- the culmination of all the
laughter
that was shared, the
tears that were shed, and the great
friendships that were formed throughout
the year. There are no words to describe the
excitement, energy, and inspiration that came
out of the shabbaton. From the water skiing to
the ruach-filled tish and
kumzitz, to the
powerful speeches made by the teachers and
students, everything about the Shabbaton was
extremely enjoyable.
Leaving school early, the ninth grade piled
onto a bus and headed to the first
stop of an incredible weekend, Ski
Rixen at Quiet Waters. After hours of
wipe-outs, avoiding high flying ramps,
successfully zooming around in water skis,
and, of course, playing wild football, the
students
arrived at the hotel in Ft. Lauderdale,
buzzing with excitement.
One of the highlights of the trip for the
girls was the 360 done by Ayelet Petrover
('12) when she flew off the ramp while knee
boarding and made everyone laugh hysterically.
After learning their room arrangements,
darting around the hotel, leaping onto the
beds, and quickly showering, the ninth
graders walked
to the nearby Chabad, braced for any
unexpected customs. Not only did everyone
participate in a beautiful, delightful,
and engaging davening,
but we also learned together in shiurim
until dinner. The class was able to sit at
various tables over Shabbat with different
Rebbeim and teachers, eating,
laughing, and
chatting.
Indeed, the students were able to connect
with not only one another, but with the
faculty as well. Another highlight of the
trip was the last tish that made everyone
closer. As we sang beautiful zemirot and
shared our personal experiences with each
other, all of the girls came together as one,
filled with great emotion. The feeling of
being able to be with each other and share
that moment with one another truly made
everyone feel proud to be a part of the
freshman class.
The freshmen relished the moving Divrei
Torah, thrilling dancing, creative games,
bonding time with their teachers and
classmates, and inspiring singing. We
savored
every last moment of
our amazing trip, feeling refreshed for the
upcoming finals but also eagerly awaiting
our next Shabbaton.
We, the freshmen, look back at this year, and
as challenging as it was, we know it was all
worth it. We gained knowledge, experiences,
and formed friendships that will last
forever. Though we started off the year as
separate people from different schools, we
finish the year as one united grade.

Award
Winning
Chesed
This year, a record number of students
donated one of their most precious
possessions to give others life- a pint of
their own blood.
Last Tuesday, the South Florida Community
Blood Bank presented representatives of WYHS
with a shimmering trophy bearing the title
"Largest Increase of Units Collected," a
testament to the widespread participation of
eligible WYHS students in the three blood
drives held at the school during the past
year, which have collected a whopping 127
units of blood (about a pound each).
Preceding the award ceremony, at which WYHS
was accompanied by dozens of other local
schools, was an elegant luncheon, replete
with kosher food and a Cinco de Mayo theme.
"It was an honor to be there, and it's very
cool that WYHS participates," commented Ben
Scheiner ('09), who co-chairs the WYHS blood
drive initiative with Perla Maikhor ('09) and
Mrs. Heather Andron , Director of Chesed and
Tzedakah. Good luck to next year's committee
chairs, Michael Feit ('10) and Rebecca Fuchs
('10).
The great success of the past blood drives
can be attributed not only to the hard work
of the committee and the courage of the
donors but also to the whole WYHS student
body, which feels honored by any opportunity
to generously assist fellow people in need.
Though the school year is winding down, our
obligation to help the world through acts of
chesed and tzedakah never ends. Accordingly,
we are hosting another blood drive on May
20th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm - yet another
opportunity to save a life.
COME DONATE BLOOD
MAY 20TH , 9:00 AM -4:00 PM
MUST BE 16 OR OLDER AND WITH PARENTAL
PERMISSION.
Salutary
Singing
The
Seniors' Last
Kumzitz
by Aleeza
Rubin ('09)
This Wednesday, the senior girls said their
good-byes to the underclassmen in their last
WYHS kumzitz. Sitting and singing on
the floor upstairs, all the girls sang
together and listened to the seniors express
their inner-most feelings about WYHS. Most
students mentioned that they never imagined
WYHS going by so fast. They encouraged the
students to grab the opportunities the school
offers them and to run with them! They
thanked the staff and their fellow classmates
for helping them grow and develop into the
people they are today. It was very
inspirational to see
all the girls come
together
as one close unit for their last WYHS
kumzitz.

AP
Studio Art: A Huge Success
This year, for the first time ever in WYHS
history, AP Studio Art was offered to
students. Under the expert direction of
resident art teacher extraordinaire Mrs.
Loren Stein, students in the class made
beautiful pieces of art and compiled
unique and creative art portfolios.
Art work
by both the AP art students and the non-AP
art students currently adorns the walls of
WYHS and truly adds an artsy and cultural
element to the school.
