Inspiring & Challenging Teenagers Since 1998

What Type of Student Does WYHS
Seek to
Enroll?
WYHS wants to admit every student who
applies to our school. By applying, a
child is
saying that he/she desires our 50/50
Judaic/college
preparatory studies curriculum, and longs for
our
combination of academic challenge and spiritual
inspiration. In the past few years, there
has been a self selection of students
applying to WYHS. In fact, almost all of the
students
who apply to WYHS are invited to join the
student
body.
Why would WYHS not accept a student?
Firstly, if WYHS would actually hurt the student
academically. Despite WYHS' multiple levels
in each
subject, not every student can handle a dual
curriculum. It's not fair to take such a
student,
because he/she will not be able to graduate
from our
high school or gain acceptance to college.
Secondly, WYHS' most solemn responsibility
is to
protect its students. It is our duty to
our parents
and students not to accept a student who we
believe
would pose as a risk to other students, or
take away from their experience at WYHS.
Lastly, WYHS' raison d'etre is to inspire
Jewish
teenagers to choose to lead
Jewishly-committed
lives. There are teenagers who will be turned
off to
Judaism by daily davening, a conservative
dress code, and not starting what most Americans
consider high school until after lunch.
WYHS loves parents, but in admissions,
cares primarily about the students.
Sometimes a parent wants a child to come to
WYHS, but the child is not
interested. It isn't fair to subject a
teenager who really
isn't interested in the demanding and
all-encompassing WYHS experience.
G-d willing, WYHS is going to enroll
its largest
class yet in September. As our school
enrolls, G-d willing, its first class of over
60 students, we are redoubling our efforts to
make sure that we can deliver the same care
and concern to every student as the day we
opened our doors to our first classes of 18
and 25 students.

Greatest Trip Ever!
This past
week, the
tenth and eleventh grade classes were
privileged to
go on a retreat to northern Florida--Camp Shalom
Ocala and Orlando. As the junior class played
tennis,
basketball, and more in Camp Shalom, the
sophomores had a blast in Universal Studios and
Islands of Adventure in Orlando. That night,
the two
classes came together for an incredible night
full of
bonfires, singing, and marshmallows. The next
day,
the
sophomores and juniors switched, and the juniors
had
an amazing time at the amusement park while the
sophomores played sports and bonded as a
class. It
was a fantastic and memorable trip and
everyone had
a great time!
Thanks so much to the teacher
chaperones as well as the 12th grade Student
Council members, Director of Student
Activities Shira
Englander, Assistant Director of Student
Activities
Rabbi Allan
Houben, and class presidents Samara Dennis
('11),
Didi Weiss ('11), Rachel Benaim ('10) and
Michael
Mizrahi ('10) for a trip we will never
forget.
You Know You Were On
The
Sophomore/Junior
Retreat When...
- Red Rover is considered a sport...at
least by the junior girls
- There's a movie theater in the gym
- Bonfire songs consist of a unique
combination of "Tov Lehodot" and "I'm
Yours"
- You are not sure how you would have
survived without the heaters in the bunks
- Chocolate syrup is an item of
extraordinary value among sophomore boys
- Your morning is confusing, as your
teachers wake you up yet at a summer camp
- WYHS breakfast cereal bowls follow you
all the way to Ocala
- Junior boys are doughnut-less
- The lines are longer at Universal on a
Monday than on a Sunday
- Your classmate discovers a whole new way
to experience the Spider-Man ride
- Shimmie gets uncontainably excited about
self-heating vegetarian Hawaiian nuggets and
stuffed shells

Hebrew at WYHS
Learning a second language is a challenge but
it is one that we , Baruch Hashem,
overcome on a daily basis. In our Hebrew
classes at WYHS, we see our students overcome
these challenges and even master
Ivrit, the Hebrew language. The Neta program
gives
us an opportunity to
facilitate Hebrew language in each class
based on the level of each individual
student. We
would like to share that experience with you.

WYHS Boys Great
Baseball Season
Under the leadership of captains Yoel
Goldberg ('09) and Doron David
('09), the
WYHS Boys Baseball team is already having a
great season. With two victories already (one
of which WYHS beat the other team by seven
runs!), the team's practice has clearly paid
off. It is the combination of seasoned
baseball veterans and new underclassmen
create the WYHS baseball team which shows
hard work and commitment. Good luck!

To end
their amazing Universal retreat, the
sophomores and juniors were treated to
arguably delicious self-heating La Briute
meals. Although no one was as excited about
them as Shimmie was, they certainly were
memorable.
313 Number of La
Briute meals bought for the tenth and
eleventh grade

54 Number of La
Briute meals actually opened and
heated
|
9 Number of La
Briute meals completely finished
