100% faculty retention is one of WYHS’ remarkable statistics this year. Why is it important to have a stable faculty?

Studies show that the best predictor of student success is faculty culture. Faculty members who feel that their school invests in their growth, and values their contributions, are faculty members who will give their all to their students. As in any field, teachers who are constantly trying to do an even better job are teachers who make a difference.

How does WYHS invest in its teachers’ growth? The school has begun to help teachers pursue additional graduate degrees. This year we are offering a bonus to any teacher who develops and implements a professional development program.

“New blood” is also important. New teachers suggest ideas which people who have been at the school haven’t considered. Our new Test Prep courses in the 11th grade were suggested by Mr. Joseph Pick, who joined our faculty last year.

Our new Math Department Chair, Mrs. Beverly Weiss, is both veretan and newbee WYHS. She has been a trusted advisor to me since before we opened our doors eight years ago. She brings vision, creativity, leadership, flexibility and boundless energy to the table. She will enable WYHS to address the trend of students taking advanced math at younger ages and increasingly competitive college boards.

They say that a principal is only as good as his faculty. By that measure, I’m a great principal.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

Up Close and Personal
with Math Department Chair Mrs. Weiss

By Alexa Bryn ('08)

This past Tuesday, parents had the opportunity to meet their childrens’ teachers and were able to get a glimpse into the daily schedule of a WYHS student. There are a number of new additions to the WYHS faculty, and over the next few weeks we will get up close and personal with some of the new members of the WYHS family.

How have you found the transition coming into WYHS?

Very easy. The people here are warm and helpful, the kids are great. I actually had an advantage coming in because I’ve been affiliated with the school ever since it first opened – both Rabbi Tirschwell and Rabbi Sugerman are Frisch graduates.
Throughout your entire teaching career, what has been your proudest moment?

Having students come visit from college and tell me how well prepared and successful they were. I’ve also been privileged to have hired my former math students to teach math alongside me at Frisch.
What are your primary goals for the math department this year?

As the school grows, we need to expand the offerings. There are going to be higher-level math courses, AP computers, more calculus levels, and math-based electives. For students who find math more challenging, there will be parallel courses, to make college level classes easier for them. Somewhere down the road I want to get the students involved in the Intel math and science competition.
Is it true that the math section of the SAT can be mastered with practice and tricks?

You need to really know the math. The tricks help you eliminate answers and definitely cut down on the time. Practice definitely helps – you begin to see patterns and develop a recognition of what the test is about.
What is it about math that excites you?

I have a fascination with numbers – the way things work out. Artists see beauty in design and color, math people see beauty in numbers.

Have No Fear...
Student Committees Are Here!

By Ethan Wasserman (’07)

This year, the students at WYHS have more committees to choose from than ever before and are signing up in droves to participate in these student led committees. In addition to the classics from years past such as the Rosh Chodesh and Chanukah/Purim committees, this year, there are many more options. Now, more than ever, there are so many ways students can pursue their interests and utilize their unique talents.

For our literary-minded students we have “The Brainstorm,” a newspaper written by and for the students that provides an opportunity for students to develop their writing skills while voicing their opinions on current event issues. Another creative outlet is the Production Committee—a team of technologically gifted students working to produce videos, slideshows and the school website.

The Torah Affairs committee, run by Vice President Rachey Berkowitz (07’), will be coordinating the upcoming and inspiring Teshuva week, presenting outstanding guest speakers throughout the year, running shiurim, and working to maintain an atmosphere of spirituality in the school.

With over a dozen committees, there is a place for every student to “Get Into It.” With student involvement growing everyday, this year is sure to be rewarding for all!

Chesed On The Horizon

Mrs. Heather Andron
Chesed Coordinator

The Chesed and Tzedakah committees are preparing for a year full of meaningful fundraisers and projects. We look forward to raising money for our brethren in Israel, building homes with Habitat for Humanity, contributing to food banks, raising money for local organizations and more. We hope that all of our students participate in these events and help make them successful.

Ali Cristina (’07), Vice President of Chesed/Tzedakah explains, “We highly encourage students to participate in chesed opportunities and tzedakah events. We want to establish a meaningful experience for students, show them the value of chesed, and help them earn their obligatory community service hours.”

Upcoming Chesed Opportunities and Events:

  • September 9 & 10- Volunteering for the Boca Raton Synagogue Mitzvah Market.
  • September 10- Daniel Cantor Wultz Foundation Basketball Tournament at 9:00 a.m.
  • September 13- Boca Raton Community Hospital Orientation for future volunteers at 7:00 p.m.
  • September 18 Tzedakah Campaign Kickoff for our brethren in northern Israel

The boys soccer team has had a busy week. Under the leadership of Coach Brian Weems and team captains Shai Barel (‘07) and Aryeh Genet (‘08), the Storm has been working hard due to their multiple games this week.

Last Saturday night, the boys soccer team played their second game of the season against Posnack. Although the night ended in a loss, much improvement was seen since the team’s first game last Thursday, as the Storm shut down the opposition for the entire first half.

Although the boys lost to Grandview Prep 6-2, Thursday’s game was a huge milestone in the team’s season. Freshmen Lior Goldstein and Ari Grunberg kicked it into high gear and scored the first goals of the season, while goalie Julian Gordon (‘08) had some incredible saves.

The boys soccer team will be playing our cross- county rivals, Hillel North Miami Beach, on Tuesday afternoon, and we need all the Storm Chasers to come and support the team!
