From the desk
of Rabbi Perry
Tirschwell
Blessed are You, Lord, Who Gives Summer to
Students and Teachers.
The opportunity to charge one's batteries and start
fresh in the fall is the priceless benefit of summer
vacation. There are certainly years where I have
wished I could have such a "reset" button in
December or February.
However, as a rebbe of mine used to say, G-d put
Yom Kippur after the summer for teenagers, who
have the opportunity to lapse in a way that they could
never have done during the school year.
It's so important to structure a teenager's
summer. Every teen's summer plans should
include daily tefilla, physical activity, reading,
volunteering, and interaction with peers. Kippot,
tzitzit and modest clothing are integral to the
summer wardrobe. A bad summer can undue all the
good accomplished by parents' hard-earned tuition
dollars.
This is the last regular edition of
Yeshiva Highlites for the school year. WYHS will
be sending out two special editions before the
summer- one covering graduation and the senior trip,
and the other featuring our alumni's
accomplishments this year.
I am deeply grateful to graduating seniors
Shira Borzak, Jordy Kaminetsky and Ben Shai who
have brought this flagship publication to new heights.
They have trained a cadre of talented underclassmen
(LeeLee Borzak, Alana Dweck and Danielle
Wolkowicz) who will carry the torch and stand on their
shoulders next year.
We owe a debt of gratitude to Mrs. Claudia
Cohen, whose idea it was to transform this from
a plain word document to a multimedia newsletter.
Last, but
certainly not least, thank you to Rabbi Josh
Spodek, who has revolutionized Claudia's and
my
two man show into a well oiled team effort by a staff of
dedicated students.
All five years of Yeshiva Highlites are available by clicking
here. We hope that they capture the energy
and excitement of WYHS, and invite your feedback
(just hit "reply" to this e-mail) as how to make the
school and newsletter even better.
Shabbat Shalom and Chag

Celebrating 40 Years
Of The Unification Of Our
Capital City,
Yerushalayim
By Danielle Wolkowicz ('09)
The final chagigah of the '06-'07 academic
school year,
which celebrated Yom Yerushalayim, was one
of the
most spirited and impressive programs yet and
left the students
with positive memories of not only this
chagigah but those of
the entire year. After a delicious lunch
of falafel and
shwarma, the students danced to Chazak for
the final time this year.
However, it was not the band's last gig, as
they also
performed at the Young Israel of Hollywood
and Hillel Day
School of Boca Raton for each community's Yom
Yerushalayim festivities.
The inspiring video, a product of the
hard work of Jeremy Hodkin ('09) and Claudia
Cohen,
expressed the chagigah's theme of how
Jerusalem changed
from the six day war in 1967 until now. The video
showed
powerful clips
of the soldiers rushing into the Old City and
finally being able
to approach the kotel after so many years.
The students
also had the privilege of hearing from Rabbi
Azaryah Berzon, the Rosh Yeshiva of Sha'arei
Mevaseret Zion and
founder of the girl's seminary, Michelelet Mevaseret
Yerushalayim via video conference.
He
stressed the importance of not only
concentrating on the
present and future of Jerusalem and Israel,
but also
focusing on the past and never taking
Jerusalem for
granted. The students were left with a
deeper
appreciation for the struggle that occurred
to get back the
Old City and for Jews to be able to return to
the kotel. Thank you to the Committee For Israel
Action, Mrs. Andron and Rabbi Spodek for putting this
memorable Chagiga together.

Welcome To WYHS!!
Student
Ambassadors
Recognized For
Doing A Great
Job
By Melissa Adler ('10)
Student ambassadors attend many of the
programs
for incoming freshmen including the Open
House,
SSATs,
and BBQ for prospective students held at the homes
of Mrs. Kanner and Rabbi Tirschwell.
Attending these programs and showing
prospective
students around the school has made the
incoming
class
feel as though they are already a part of the
school.
On Monday all of the student ambassadors
were honored at a special lunch where they each
received
a certificate recognizing their efforts in helping
the
incoming freshmen class
integrate into the WYHS community. Thank
you to all our ambassadors for all your time and
efforts on behalf of WYHS. It is truly
appreciated.

Election Fever
Is In
The Air!!
Student Council
5768
Campaigns, Speeches and
Elections Held
This Week
By Julie Rosenberg ('08)
This week has been filled with school spirit as
students dedicated several hours to campaigning
enthusiastically for positions on student council.
Posters
covered the walls of the hallways and nominees
distributed
candy bars and chocolate covered strawberries to
potential
supporters.
Several spots on Student Council are
already
filled as the two nominees for School President ran
unopposed.
Anosh
Zaghi and I will be your next School Presidents.
The tension and anticipation mounted as election
day
approached to decide the remaining positions.
No
matter
what the results are, I am sure that this will be
the best student council ever. I look forward to
working with the Student Council as president next
year.
Good luck to all the nominees. The results of
the
elections will be appear in the next addition of the
Yeshiva Highlites.

Freshman
Class End Their Year
With A Memorable
Shabbaton
By LeeLee Borzak ('10)
When the 6th period bell rang on Friday,
May 11, the
freshmen were eager to run and get their
suitcases in
anticipation for the long-awaited WYHS Freshman
Shabbaton. After everyone boarded the bus,
the boys were
dropped off at Quiet Waters Park, to go cable
water skiing at
Ski Rixen. The wipe outs were all part of
the fun as the
boys tried to stay on the water skis and knee
boards. It
was an awesome way to start such a great
Shabaton.
While the boys were water skiing, the
girls went to Glacier Ice Arena where
everyone had a blast
ice skating. Once again, although we all fell
more than a few
times, it was a great way for all the
girls to spend
memorable time together. Thanks to Ms.
Sardano and
Mrs. Saddler and President Elect, Julie
Rosenberg for
accompanying the girls.
After the afternoon events, the
freshmen traveled to the
Holiday Inn hotel in
Fort Lauderdale to begin their preparation
for Shabbat. For
Mincha and Kabalat Shabbat, we davened at the
beautiful
Chabad of Fort Lauderdale. It was a great way
to welcome
Shabbat. After an amazing night of dinner,
Ruach-filled
dancing, Kumzitzes ,Tisches, and Divrei Torah
by students
of the freshman class, we all returned
back to the hotel.
On Shabbat morning, we returned to
the
Chabad for Shacharit. After Kiddush, Rabbi
Tirschwell
delivered a beautiful Dvar Torah about the
upcoming holiday,
Shavuot. After a delicious lunch and
inspirational
singing, we returned back to the hotel for
free time.
Students, along with the Judaic faculty
chaperones and
their families, had so much fun playing board
games and
eating snacks.
We then returned back to Shul in time
for Mincha and Seudat Shlishit. After
everyone ate, the
chaperones put on a skit for the students.
Although it
was funny, the real message was teaching us
about the
importance of Kavanna, concentration, in our
Tefilot. It
made a real impact on the way we view our
davening.
Then, the fifty freshmen were split into ten
groups to play
challenging games. Putting together a puzzle
blindfolded,
WYHS trivia and word scrambles turned out to
be difficult,
yet fun.
For the final Kumzitz and Tisch,
everyone sang together. Students and teachers
again gave beautiful Divrei Torah, filled
with meaningful
messages. As our 9th grade year comes to a
close, we
all relished over the amazing memories we
have from our
first year of high school. After
Havdallah, the students
returned home after an unforgettable Shabbat.
There could
not have been a better way to end freshman year.
Thank you so much to the Judaic
Faculty who, along with their families, came
to chaperone
the Shabbaton. A huge thank
you to Freshman Class Presidents Amiel Abir and
LeeLee Borzak and Rabbi
Josh Spodek for an
unbelievable Shabbat.

The BrainStorm Wins
Big
at Sun-
Sentinel Journalism
Awards Ceremony
By Alexa Bryn ('08)
On May 7th, the Sun-Sentinel held its
annual High School
Journalism Awards Ceremony for Palm Beach County
Schools. As the editor of The Brainstorm,
WYHS' new arts
and opinion paper, I am thrilled to say that
we walked
away with top ranks in 3 categories,
honorable mentions in
3 more categories, and fantastic comments
from the Sun-
Sentinel judges. Here's what the judges
had to say:
About Harry Ganz' Science Column (1st
Place): "Harry's
columns demonstrate persuasive argument,
research, depth
and humor. He covers an impressive range
of topics
from the changing makeup of vaccinations to
Iran's nuclear
program. He tackles science and politics
with the same
ease, and effectively uses questions to draw
the reader
into a column."
About our Entertainment Section (2nd
Place): "Out of
all the schools entered, WY's newspaper had
the best
writing by far. The writing was strong,
clear and
engaging. Never too long. The book reviews
were
sophisticated for a high school newspaper,
but never
highbrow. The reviews made me want to read
the books.
Outstanding job!"
About our Features Section (Honorable
Mention): "True
to its name, I give this paper an A+ for
its serious political
content, such as articles on torture and
casualties in
Iraq."
The Brainstorm's first year was truly a
banner one. But, I
am "brainstorming" already to try to top it
next year!

"Even if I was only there for a short time, it was enough
to get a feel for how impressive your place is and how
remarkable is the avirah with which WYHS is infused."

Upper School Headmaster,
on his recent
visit to WYHS
