From the desk of Rabbi Perry
Tirschwell
The reason that I chose yeshiva high school
education as my profession is the difference that a
yeshiva high school made in my life. Though I had
attended highly regarded and predominantly Jewish
elementary and middle public schools, it was the
interest that my yeshiva high school teachers took in
me that enabled me to develop into the person I am
today.
The advantage of a small high school is the
ability to focus in on each and every student and bring
out the best in him or her. This benefits students in
two ways.
First, students who would never play on a varsity
team,
act in a play or serve on a yearbook staff at a larger
school are stars at WYHS. Cocurricular
activities bring out talents which would never
come out in the classroom. The self confidence that
results from such success, positively impacts every
aspect of the students’ performance.
Second, a small school can pick up on issues
that
a student is facing. There are many challenges
that teenagers face- social, emotional, spiritual,
academic, and physical. Though no teacher or
administrator is totally clairvoyant, we are able to
identify and address problems earlier and quicker
than a large high school because we know every
student’s name, background, community, and
family.
Planning for next year is already in high gear.
We have begun designing the cocurricular activities
and identifying the students to run them. I invite
parents, students and faculty to share their input
regarding students who could grow from playing a
role in these activities. Please also share your
observations about students who could use help in
facing any challenge they may have.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

WYHS Spring Comedy Is A
Smashing Success!!!
By Harry Ganz ('08)
WYHS’ spring comedy, Neil Simon’s “Rumors”,
was a smash hit! Playing in front of a
completely
packed house on Wednesday night, the actors and
actresses had the audience roaring with
laughter from start to finish.
Despite tricky dialogue and non-stop
action, the
thespians were able to pull off the play
without a hitch.
The show was as packed with talent,
from old
Saddler favorites such as Shira Borzak (‘07),
Avi
Dennis (‘07), Jeremy Hodkin (‘09), David
Belolo (’07),
and Tamar Buzaglo (’09), to the fantastic
rookies
Nonny Gross (‘09), Leora Cohen (’08), Harry Ganz
(‘08), Chana Brauser (’10), and Eyal
Elkeslasi (’08).
Thanks so much to director Mrs. Saddler,
who led
the cast with her informative and gentle
encouragement.
The entire cast had an amazing experience
both
on and off stage, learning new things
about acting,
and themselves. Everything in the WYHS
production of “Rumors” was big, but nothing was
bigger than the personalities in the
cast—except for
maybe the applause.
Farewell to graduating thespians Shira Borzak
(’07), Avi Dennis (’07) and David Belolo
(’07), who took
their final bows on a WYHS stage.
Congratulations to the entire cast and
crew for
what has been called the “best WYHS production
ever!”

The President
Goes
To WashingtonStudent Attends AIPAC Conference
By Raquel Amram ('07)
Last week, I attended the AIPAC conference in
Washington, DC, together with approximately 6000
supporters of Israel, including 1,200 high
school
students. We joined together to learn the
political
realities facing Israel today in the hopes
that we
could affect greater support for Israel on a
“grass
roots” level.
We heard from several memorable speakers,
including Dick Cheney, Tzipi Livni, and Ehud
Olmert. They all spoke about Israel’s
importance
as a loyal ally of the United States in the
Middle East.
With great pride, I learned that Israel
continues to be a
leader in helping America develop high caliber
technology and military intelligence.
While all the speakers were amazing, one
stood
apart from the others as the most dynamic and
inspiring of all—Pastor John Hagee, founder
of the
Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas. He
spoke
with great conviction from a Christian
perspective
about the importance of standing by Israel, a
country
that is synonymous with justice and
equality—a
country that is home to G-d’s chosen people.
Sadly, when I emerged from the conference,
I was
greeted by protesters stationed outside the
Washington Convention Center. The protesters
included anti-Israel, Holocaust-denying
Neturai Karta
rabbis, in addition to others who demonstrated
against
Israel. Seeing the protesters was an
important “wake
up” call for me. I left the conference
determined to
share my experience and all that I learned
with my
fellow WYHS students.
We are now at a crucial point in our
history. As
I learned at AIPAC, we have a
responsibility to
make our voices heard in opposition to
policies
and prejudices that threaten the State of
Israel and the
Jewish people each and every day. Our fate is
in our
hands.

A Trip Down
Memory
Lane
2007
Yearbook Is
Ready!!!
By Chava Rubin ('07)
It’s only March and the 2007 yearbook is
already complete!
While there have been challenges in the
process,
creating this yearbook has truly been a
learning
experience. Students can say that they
created a
book—a feat that most people don’t accomplish in
their lifetime.
The yearbook committee offers great
opportunity for students to develop
leadership skills.
It gives students a venue to express
themselves
through graphic art, layout, humor,
technology, and
creativity.
Students also learn new skills that they
will use for
the rest of their lives. Because yearbook has
sections
pertaining to all grades, sports, programs and
extracurricular activities, many students
can find
their own niche.
Our Lifetouch Publisher, John Lynn, says
“This is
the best yearbook WYHS has put out yet.” The
entire
staff can’t wait to unveil what we have been
working on
all year. Be prepared for a great trip
down memory
lane!

A Tribute To The Rav
Honoring
R'
Soloveitchik For Rosh Chodesh Nissan
By LeeLee Borzak ('09)
On Tuesday, Rosh Chodesh Nissan was both a
fun chagigah and a moving and
inspirational learning experience. After a
delicious breakfast of bagels, eggs, bourekas
and
more, students and staff of WYHS hit the
dance floor
and celebrated the new month with spirited
dancing
and music provided by the school band, Chazak.
To commemorate Rav Soloveitchik’s z”l
Yartzheit, which is during Chol HaMoed
Pesach, Rabbi Houben prepared a moving
slide show to bring to life the amazing
legacy that
the Rav left behind. Rabbi Houben was able to
communicate to the students the impact Rabbi
Soloveitchik had on modern Orthodoxy.
In addition, the students were privileged
to hear
from Rabbi Adler, father of our own Mrs.
Jacob, via
video conferencing all the way from Teaneck, New
Jersey. Rabbi Adler was a shamash
(assistant) of Rav Soloveitchik until the day he
died. “Hearing someone who was so close to The
Rav really helped us to truly understand his
teachings,” said Rachel Benaim (’10).
Thanks so much to the Rosh Chodesh
committee, Rabbi Houben, Rabbi Adler and Chazak
for helping to make such a memorable Rosh
Chodesh Nissan.

She Said/ She Said
Mother-Daughter Edition
WYHS Goes Hollywood!
By Alexa Bryn ('08)
Last Shabbos, the WYHS Judaic faculty
took their
show on the road to Hollywood, where they
joined 40
students and their families, for an incredible
Shabbaton. The Danis family hosted the
Tirschwells
for Friday night dinner. Below, Susu Danis and
daughter Rachel (’10) share their thoughts on
the
Shabbaton and the WYHS-Hollywood connection.
What was it like
having
faculty members at your home for Shabbat Dinner?
Rachel said: It made me feel like I
was really
part of the school. Since I live in
Hollywood, I don’t
usually get to see the teachers on Shabbos,
so having
them come to my house really solidified my
connection to WYHS.
Mrs. Danis said: It was
very nice
to get to know the Tirschwells better. I
found out that
we were both married in the same month of the
same
year—only a few days apart. I made them Cuban
food
which I’m sure was something different. And
it was
really nice to just get to know each other,
to talk, in an
informal setting.
What was the highlight of Shabbos for
you?
Rachel said: The kumzitz at the
Brauser’s
house. All of the girls and female teachers
were in
one room singing and sharing divrei Torah. The
atmosphere was very spiritual.
Mrs. Danis said: Friday night
dinner
was definitely a highlight, as was the learning
program before lunch where the Rebbeim spoke
about Pesach.
What did you think of
the “round robin” shiurim given by the rebbeim?
Rachel said: I thought it was a
great idea.
They shared some really interesting ideas about
Pesach and gave our parents a chance to see how
our teachers teach and the way that we learn.
Mrs. Danis said: I really loved the
program.
Each rabbi came in extremely prepared, spoke
for 8
minutes, and succeeded in getting his point
across.
Though you have only been part of the WYHS
family for less than a year, how has the
school tried to
make you/your daughter feel comfortable?
Rachel said: Every time there is a
school
event, WYHS makes sure to include the Hollywood
students. For example, when there was the
varsity
basketball game at the Miami Heat arena,
there was a
bus back to Hollywood afterwards. The shabbaton
was also a really nice way to connect the
Hollywood
families to the faculty.
Mrs. Danis said: Last night, there
was a
school play in Delray Beach and there was a bus
ready to take Rachel home when it was over.
Shimmie
Kaminetsky is really trying to accommodate the
Hollywood parents by working out
transportation for
sports teams. In general, Rachel feels so
comfortable
at school. She has made so many friends,
girls from
Boca and other communities come to our house for
Shabbos all the time and she goes there.
We’re very
happy.
