From the desk of Rabbi Perry
Tirschwell
How does a high school parent get involved?
You were so truly engaged in your child’s elementary
and
middle school education. In high school, it may seem
that you have no role to play in your child's academic
and spiritual growth.
G-d gave teenagers parents for a
reason. Now that your child is in high school,
your mode of involvement may change, but your
contribution to your child's growth is just as critical.
Here are a few tips on how you can help
your
child, and his/her school;
If your child is challenged with completing his/her
work, take the lead in keeping in contact with
the teachers. The best means of communication
is through email. Check edline regularly.
A parent's
watchful eye and well placed advice can
be crucial to a teenager's academic success.
On Shabbat, ask your child about the
activities which you read about in this newsletter.
Ask them to share their feelings about the program
and what impacted on them. It’s a rare teenager
that will offer to share without prompting.
Know where and with whom your child is
outside of school. Call the parents of the
students at which he/she is spending Shabbat
or sleeping over to study. Communicate your
standards in terms of curfew, etc. An inappropriate
Saturday night can undue a week of inspiring
tefilot and shiurim.
Meet the teachers and other parents-
Come to programs like the Freshman Parent
Melava Malka, Chanuka & Purim
chagigas, college programs and
parent
teacher conferences. It takes a village. Circle the
wagons.
Our
school is about to experience significant growth in
the
coming five years. Please share with me your
talents as we will need lay leaders willing to get
involved in public relations, building, recruitment, and
fundraising. We want you to be involved!
Shabbat Shalom,

"The Best Concert
EVER!" Chaim Dovid Rocks at WYHS
|
|
By Danielle Wolkowicz ('09)
On Friday, Israeli singing sensation Chaim Dovid
gave a spectacular concert at WYHS for the
students and faculty. As the first Rosh Chodesh
program of the school year, the concert was much
anticipated and the rauch was palpable as
students and teachers danced together for an
entire hour and a half. Bayla Halbstein (’09)
said, “The concert was great because we were able
to bond as a school. Once the music came on, it
didn’t matter who your close friends were, everyone
was dancing and having an amazing time.”
Leah Wiznitzer (‘08) found the lyrics
spiritually
uplifting, commenting, “They helped me connect
to Eretz Yisrael—I felt like I was right back in
Yerushalayim.” The seniors certainly had this
same feeling, as Chaim Dovid ended the concert with
a powerful rendition of “Leshana Habah
B’Yerushalayim” which he dedicated to them.
The excitement during the concert set the
tone for a year full of fantastic chagigahs
and inspiring programs. A special thank you to Chaim
Dovid and his bandmates and as always, to Rabbi
Spodek, for making it happen!

GOOOAAALLL!
Girls Soccer Team KICK Off Season
|
|
By Ali Cristina (’07)
This week marked the beginning of the
girls varsity soccer season. The team has taken
every opportunity to practice since the
beginning of the school year with coaches Ozzy
Oliviera and Melissa Pereira and it definitely shows.
Led by veteran players Ali Cristina (’07) and Malka
Hizkiya (’07), the team has welcomed many new
players this year and they are eager to work
together
to produce a winning season.
This past Tuesday, the Storm played
their first game against Berean Christian in torrential
rain. Although they weren’t able to pull through,
every player showed great teamwork that
can only bring them to victory in their future games.
This Saturday night, November 4th, the
girls soccer team will be playing against Donna Klein
at 8:30 pm at Woodlands Park. Everyone is
encouraged to come out and support the girl’s
soccer team!

Getting to Know
You
Freshman Parents Enjoy Melava Malka @ The
Tirschwells
|
|
By Fay Wolkowicz
This past Saturday night, the Tirschwells hosted
a Melava Malka at their home for parents of
the freshmen class. As the parent of Shira Wolcowicz
('10), attending this program was quite a treat! Upon
our arrival, we were greeted by the Tirschwell girls
who had prepared nametags for each parent with the
name and picture of his or her child. These
nametags were a great way to facilitate
conversation and help us meet the parents of
children who had already been to our home.
We were very impressed with the number of
families whose children travel long distances to
WYHS
and the commitment of these families to their
children’s education and happiness. On behalf of
the freshman class, we would like to thank the
Tirschwells for their hospitality and insight into our
need to get to know parents from all of the
communities.

Mrs. Greer Wins
Prestigious Award Named Top Jewish Educator in South
Palm Beach
County
|
|
By Rabbi Perry Tirschwell
The Grinspoon-Steinhardt Awards for Excellence in
Jewish Education recognize teachers across North
America who have made an extraordinary
contribution
to Jewish education. A classroom teacher is chosen
by each community every year through the local
central agency for Jewish education.
On Wednesday, at a luncheon attended by
hundreds of Jewish day school teachers from
South Palm Beach County, as president of the Day
School Prinicpals Council, I had the pleasure of
presenting Mrs. Greer with the award.
Why choose an English teacher to receive an
award for excellence in Jewish education?
Though she is personally a committed Jew and a
department chairperson at a yeshiva high school, can
an English teacher truly be called a Judaic educator?
Carla Greer is unique in her commitment to her
students' spiritual growth. She hosts each of her
classes at her home for a Friday night dinner each
year, and regularly attends the synagogue which half
of our students attend.
Mrs. Carla Greer is an incomparable role model for
our school's philosophy of integration of Judaic
and general knowledge. A few examples of this
integration;
Each year Mrs. Greer’s students write a
comparison between a piece of English literature
and an essay by a great Jewish thinker, such as
Death of a Salesman and Rabbi Soloveitchik,
Siddhartha and Rav
Kook.
Mrs. Greer has reviewed her curriculum with
Rav Aharon Lichtenstein, the Rosh Yeshiva
of “Gush” who holds a doctorate in English literature
from Harvard.
In her studies of archtypes, Mrs. Greer
analyzes Avraham and Yaakov as existential
heroes in consonance with Kierkagrad's concept
of the Knight of Faith.
Mrs. Greer received a $1,000 cash award, $1,500
torwards professional development, and has been
invited (all expenses paid) to the General Assembly
(GA) of the United Jewish Communities in Los
Angeles, to be recognized with all the Grinspoon-
Steinhardt recipients.

He Said/ She Said
with
Freshman Class Presidents
LeeLee Borzak and Amiel Abir
By Alexa Bryn (’08)
This year's elections for freshman presidents of
Student Council was especially thrilling, with six
fantastic students running for the two positions
open. While all the candidates ran an excellent race,
only two were elected as the newest additions to
the
Student Council.
Why did you run for Student
Council?
She said: Just in my few months as a
freshman, I saw how much Student Council does for
the school. I really wanted to be part of that.
He said: I wanted to take a
leadership role
in WYHS. We have a wonderful Student Council and
being part of that is a privilege.
Which areas of the school do you hope to impact
most?
She said: I really want to plan an amazing
freshman trip and night out—those are the things
your class will always remember.
He said: My whole campaign was about
listening to what people have to say. Obviously I
want to create great shabbatonim and trips, but my
real goal is to make my class closer.
Which leader in school, in your community, or
globally, do you look up to most and why?
She said: Golda Meir, because she did so
much for Israel even as a woman in a man’s world.
He said: My dad. He’s really understanding
and forgiving and he knows how to react in every
situation. These are qualities any great leader must
have.
What new ideas do you have for improving your
freshman year?
She said: Raising school spirit, easing the
transition and making the year more fun. I
also think we should have student-student tutoring
going on at school.
He said: I want to have a big suggestion
box for the freshman class and have kids write in it
whenever they have an idea or something is
bothering them. Then, once I know what my class
wants, I will work for its needs.
What was your slogan?
She said: “Borzak has got your back”
and “Borzak attack!.”
He said: “What can be better than a nice
meal and a cold root beer? How about Amiel Abir for
freshmen class president!”
