From the desk of Rabbi Perry
Tirschwell
Art, band, debate, newspaper, photography and
yoga are being offered as after school electives
on
Tuesdays. The school is providing a late bus at 5:15
for any Hollywood, Miami Beach and NMB students
who participate. Participants will receive a pass, fail
or A on their report cards and transcripts. Student-
athletes can participate in electives during any
seasons that they are not playing sports. See the
article below for details.
We highly recommend that sophomores take the
PLAN exam, which will be given on a day off
from
school, Wednesday, September 21, at 10 a.m. The
PLAN is a pre-ACT. Students often score higher on
the ACT than on the SAT. All you need to do is send
in a check for $10 with your child. Please direct
checks and any questions to Mr. Dobrick.
This Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be a
Mitzvah Market at and
sponsored by the institutions of the Boca Raton
Synagogue community. It's at outing for the whole
family, including a barbeque.
Mazel tov to Rica Dray and Ari Lieberman on their
engagement and to their children Joey (’09), Sarah
(’06) and Tamar (’06). Mazel tov to Drs. William and
Susan Ganz on the
engagement of their daughter Tova and to younger
siblings Debbie (’05) and Harry (’08).

Students Respond to Hurricane Tragedy
|
|
by Chava Rubin ('07)
As the world witnessed the terrible
destruction that Hurricane Katrina brought upon the
residents of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, our
school felt it imperative to respond
immediately to this horrific tragedy.
Last Friday morning following
davening, the entire student body and Judaic
faculty watched a moving slideshow that portrayed
the complete devastation and loss of life that has
replaced the once thriving metropolis of New Orleans.
Many images and news clips illustrated this
unbelievable disaster and brought to life the severity
of the situation. After the presentation,
Student
Council president, Sahar Zaghi (’06) spoke about how
important it is for us, as Jews, to be a part of
the world around us. Sahar quoted a
midrash in Parshat Vayeshev,
explaining how when Ya’akov came to Canaan
he wanted to settle in peace and forget the troubles
of the world around him. Hashem came to
Ya’akov and rebuked him saying that it is the
responsibility of a tzadik to take care of the world in
which he lives. Someone as great as Ya’akov
Avinu cannot turn a blind eye to his
surroundings. Therefore, in relation to the
devastating situation at hand, we, the Jewish people
must acknowledge this incredible catastrophe
happening around us and take action.
With this in mind the school launched its
first Tzedakah Drive of the year.
Student Council president Tuvia Brander (’06)
introduced the campaign with words of motivation
and encouragement. This Tzedakah Drive will
be raising money for those hurricane victims in need.
The fundraiser was initiated this past Monday, and
will continue throughout the month of Elul. We invite
everyone, parents and students alike, to join us and
help this cause.
Before ending the program, junior Rebecca
Isaacs (’07), originally from New Orleans, shared with
her fellow students her emotions after seeing her
hometown completely decimated by this natural
disaster. She shared with us several childhood
memories of her home, her school, her shul and her
neighborhood that will never be the same. Hearing
about the hurricane from someone we all know and
can relate to helped turn this disaster from a
news event into a personal tragedy.

We would like to thank our Director of
Technology, Mrs. Claudia Cohen and Student Council
vice presidents Jordana Kaminetsky (‘07) and Avi
Lasko (‘07), for working tirelessly on the slideshow.

Building Bridges with Words
|
|
by Mrs. Bambi Rainbeau
In order to advance our school’s mission
of creating a caring environment we have
chosen as our school wide goal for this year “Building
Bridges with Words.” Communication is an essential
part of any successful school. Many steps have been
taken this year to improve the communication
between the administration, teachers, parents and
students.
An extremely useful and easy-to-use
tool that will greatly enhance the school’s ability
to communicate to our students and parents is the
computer program Edline. Edline gives teachers,
parents and students the opportunity to remain
constantly aware and updated on all the
academics, athletics and extra curricular programs
taking place in the school at any given time. Edline
provides the teachers with the opportunity to be in
regular contact with parents either individually, or on
a class-wide basis with the click of a button.
Some of the features of Edline include the
ability to:
- List all homework assignments
on a daily basis
- View the school calendar which details all
upcoming tests, quizzes, long-term projects, any
club or sports activity or any after school program or
trip. Conveniently, each individual student will only
see on their personal calendar all the
information that is relevant to them and their
schedule
- Download information teachers feel their students
should have access to, as well as added relevant
links and photos
- Receive important information or school
updates in real time
- Access a wealth of up to date information written
in the Grade Report section, such as a
student’s grades, number of absences and lates in
any of his classes
Edline is easy to use and offers a wonderful
form of communication for everyone in the school.
Teachers and administrators make a point of
updating Edline frequently, and encourage students
to log on as well. In the busy times that we live in,
the school’s ability to create chains of
communication by simply entering data and
sending a few emails is an invaluable tool that can
help the students make the most of their year.
A key link in this vital chain of
communication is the parents. In order to make all of
these efforts to “Build Bridges with Words” succeed,
WYHS needs the involvement of our parents.
Insight into the progress of your child is at your
fingertips; please make use of this beneficial and
worthwhile tool!

Electives: The Choices are Endless
|
|
by Chava Rubin ('07)
The elective program got off to a great start
this past Tuesday with many new and exciting
courses being offered. The choices include such
varied and interesting classes as photography,
debate, yoga, art, choir, and band. To make these
fascinating classes available to all students, electives
are scheduled after school on early dismissal
Tuesdays. Transportation is provided and the
response has been overwhelming.
Learn about each course and see what it
has to offer – it is never too late to join!
Our very own director of technology, Mrs. Claudia
Cohen, is teaching the photography elective. The
goal of this class is to educate students on snapshot
photos and to learn the necessary skills to
become expert photographers. Students began
the class by looking at different cameras and
discussing some basic concepts relating to a digital
darkroom. After their brief lesson, students ventured
out into the hallways of WYHS and took pictures of
the other electives in order to try out their new
photography skills.
The intense debate elective is being taught by
Director of College Preparatory Studies and history
teacher, Mr. Adam Dobrick. This elective, not only
instructs students in the fine art of competitive
debate, but instills within them important life
skills, such as confidence and teamwork. Topics to
be
discussed include current events, historical events,
and moral issues.
Yoga class is a new and unique elective offered
to girls. The elective is taught by renowned massage
therapist and yoga instructor, Mrs. Yocheved Hande,
mother of Michael (’05) and Perel ('03). Mrs. Hande
truly
knows how to create a soothing and relaxing
setting that is conducive for yoga. By taking
this class, students are able to release themselves
from the daily stresses of school and life, and create
a center of peace for their mind, body, and
soul.
This week began a series of sophisticated and
fun art classes with Mrs. Lauren Stein. After
heading last year’s successful second floor art
dedication projects, WYHS decided to make art with
Mrs. Stein a weekly activity! The syllabus includes:
two and three dimensional exercises, illuminated
manuscripts, paper cuts, drawing and painting in
color, black and white and collage and much more.
Students will each have the opportunity to create a
portfolio of their work throughout the year. We all
look forward to seeing the beautiful work from these
artistically gifted students.
Choir is being led by Mrs. Elisheva Levitt,
a well-respected member of the Boca Raton
community, and headed by our own singing senior,
Kayla Kowal. Try-outs were held this past
Wednesday and these committed girls will soon begin
practicing on a weekly basis.
In its first week, the school’s new elective
program is already flourishing. Those fortunate
enough to be able to learn from such dedicated
teachers will hopefully be able to walk away with
some of the passion and knowledge of their
talented instructors. When looking at all of the
different electives taking place in our school, one can
clearly see what a dynamic group of students
attend WYHS.

History Making Week in STORM Sports
|
|
by Moshe Genet ('06) and Shira Borzak
('07)
Girl's Volleyball:
This past week brought more success to the
ever-improving girls’ volleyball team. Although the
Storm recorded two loses on paper, these games
demonstrated how much the team has improved,
scoring several more points than in previous games.
In Tuesday’s game against Boca Prep, Raquel Amram
(’07) and Jordana Kaminetsky’s (’07) ferocious
serves dominated the first set. In the following
sets Stephanie Trachtenberg (’07) and Leah
Bensimon (’07) took over with their powerful
setting and spiking.
Thursday’s game against Grandview Prep
was a well played match, with extremely vocal fans
cheering on the Storm. Every player on the team was
given the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and
display awesome teamwork. Flawless “bump-
set-spike” plays were executed by sophomore Jackie
Itzkowitz (’08) and freshman Emily Waxman (’09). It
was clear to the coach and fans that the entire team
had made tremendous gains in their volleyball skills.
Please come to the girls’ Saturday night
game against the RASG Hebrew Academy of
Miami at 9:30 p.m. and cheer on your favorite
STORM team!
(Directions to the game are posted on Edline)
Boy's Soccer:
“How the tables have turned!” screamed
ecstatic soccer co-captain Dov Lieber (’06) after the
boys’ soccer team triumphed over its rival, the once
unbeatable Lake Worth Christian by a score of 3-0,
this past Tuesday. A truly monumental
event, this was Yeshiva’s first ever soccer
victory over Lake Worth. “The Storm fought for
every ball and gave 110% effort which is what lead
them to victory!” asserted Coach Ozzy. Co-captain
Jordan Lieber (’06) was superb and accomplished the
difficult feat of his second hat-trick in as many
games. Freshman Aryeh Genet (’08) made huge
strides in his offensive skills and is credited with an
important assist in this unbelievable game. Shai Barel
(’07) “stuck like glue” to Lake Worth’s most potent
offensive player.
Yeshiva continued its streak of
dominance with an 8-0 blowout against Boca
Prep Thursday afternoon. The Storm
demonstrated great ball control and passing in this
game. Co-captain Dov Lieber (’06) recorded his first
ever hat trick, while brother and co-captain Jordan
(’06) also blasted one into the goal. The Genet
brothers totaled three goals; Aryeh (08’) made two
while Moshe (’06) had one.
The soccer team hopes to keep its streak
alive and continue to have success in what has
already proven to be the greatest boys’ soccer
season ever.
Please come cheer on the Storm as they go for their
fourth victory against Donna Klein this Saturday night
at 8:45 p.m. at Woodlands Park.
