Boys "Wild Tisch"
|
|
by Mordechai Siev ('06)
Last weekend all the boys of WYHS spent a
fun filled and meaningful Shabbat in
Boca.
After enjoying scrumptious meals and moving
divrei Torah at the homes of their Rebbeim,
the boys all converged on Rabbi Tirschwell’s house
for
the world-famous “Wild Tisch.”
With lively singing, divrei Torah, and Mrs.
Tirschwell’s awesome meatballs and chulent, this was
truly an incredible night. David Atkin (’07)
and Jason Mann (’07) added to the tisch with
their beautiful divrei Torah that touched and
inspired all present. The singing and ruach, led by
Rabbi Moshe Schochet, lasted well into the evening.
A number of boys even stayed past midnight enjoying
the powerful story telling by Hillel Lefkowitz (’07).
Despite the abundance of meatballs, no one broke
the official record for “Most Mrs. Tirschwell Meatballs
Eaten After a Meal,” which still stands at a whopping
33 meatballs consumed by alumnus Tzvi
Schwartzbaum (’04). All in all the first wild tisch of
the year was a smashing success, full of
fun,
laughter and inspiration. Thank you to Rabbi
and Mrs.
Tirschwell for hosting this awesome tisch.

Sign Up Now! Parent-Teacher Conferences Online
|
|
by Rabbi Perry Tirschwell, Principal
I’m happy to announce that our much anticipated
online Parent Teacher Conference scheduling is
open for business!
Scheduling Parent Teacher conferences at any
yeshiva high school has been a nightmare. Each
student has up to eight teachers, and many parents
have more than one child in the school. It took an
inordinate amount of time for office staff to organize,
parents and teachers got their schedules too late,
neither group was happy once they received their
schedules, and errors were bound to occur.
Our online Parent Teacher Conference scheduling
program, Virtual Paragon, was designed by a New
Jersey yeshiva parent to obviate these
problems. It allows the parent to make (or
change) his or her own appointments from the
comfort of their own home, it allows the teachers to
see in advance how their evenings are unfolding, and
it avoids any errors.
As with any computer program, there is a learning
curve. Once you have used the program, you’ll find
it’s extremely straight forward.
Before you start, all you need to know is who are
your child(ren)’s teachers. If you have misplaced
the instructions that we gave out at Meet the
Teacher Night, click on the link at the end of this
article to see, download, or print them.
You can make schedule or change your conferences
up until Sunday, November 6, 5:00 p.m.
Conferences will take place on Monday, November 7
and Tuesday, November 15. That’s only a week and
a half after the holidays, so I highly recommend
scheduling your conferences as soon as possible.
Remember- appointments are first come, first served.
Your contact at the school for assistance is our
Director of Technology, Mrs. Claudia Cohen. She is
reachable 24/6 by e-mail at support@wyhs.net and
by phone at extension 319 at the school. Please
understand that under this system, the school
office does not have the ability to schedule
appointments for you. Teachers’ schedules fill up, so
get online today and make your appointments!

Teshuva, Tefilla, Tzedaka
|
|
by Bayla Halbstein ('09)
Aleeza Rubin ('09) and Danielle Wolkowicz
('09)
With Rosh Hashanah and Yom
Kippur quickly approaching, WYHS kicked off
its annual Teshuva Campaign. In addition
to our month long Hurricane Katrina Tzedaka
Drive (which has already raised over $1500), this
past Monday began a series of mini shiurim
given by the Rebbeim and teachers before
first period classes.
The topics for the shiurim are varied, but all
have the underlying theme of self-improvement
and
personal reflection. Even before classes begin
students are able to hear Torah-infused
words
of spirituality and meaning, and have had a
tremendous impact on all of us.
This past Wednesday night all the girls participated in
a powerful Kinnus Teshuva program. After
school, the girls went to a Judaic faculty member’s
home where they ate delicious dinners and had
chance to bond with their teachers and their families.
The girls were also able to have meaningful
discussions with their teachers about
teshuva
and the ability to change.
Upon returning to school students benefited from an
inspirational lecture on teshuva and
tefilla given by Rebbetzin Davis, the
esteemed Rebbetzin of the Hollywood community and
proud mother of alumni Shira (’01), Batsheva (’03)
and current freshman Ariella (’09). Rebbetzin Davis
spoke about the different steps of teshuva,
building stronger relationships with family and friends,
and the importance of tefilla.
Altogether this week has been incredibly inspirational
and has fostered more Torah learning and
personal growth. Thank you to Rebbetzin Davis
for making the Kinnus Teshuva program so
special, and to all the teachers who hosted their
students and gave motivating shiurim. May we
all be blessed with only good things this year.
Shana Tova!

Moving Selichot Program
|
|
by Meira Tirschwell ('07)
This past Saturday night the 10th through
12th grade students attended an inspiring program at
the Aish Centre in Hollywood. It was an opportunity
for our students to get together to learn, to grow
and to reflect during this time of
introspection and Selichot prayers.
The evening began with a viewing of a powerful
episode of the television show, Northern Exposure.
The episode, entitled The Spirit of Yom
Kippur,
deals with the importance of repentance and
recognizing one’s mistakes as well as realizing the
consequences of one’s actions. Rabbi Spodek
urged
all of us to spend this month of Elul examining
and reflecting on our lives and how to improve them.
In an effort to motivate others to change, a number
of students shared personal anecdotes
about powerful experiences in their own lives. The
topics discussed included Lashon Hara – evil
slander, refusing temptation, repentance, humility
and the importance of optimism. Raquel Amram (’07)
reminded everyone that “while gossip might be true,
it is still Lashon Hara.” Hillel Lefkowitz (’07)
urged everyone to “be aware of all the suffering in
the world and to take life seriously.”
The most moving part of the program was Rabbi
Shapiro’s speech. Rabbi Shapiro, the Rav of
Congregation Shaarei Tefilla in North Miami Beach,
inspired the entire audience with his powerful
message of our responsibility to add
Kedusha – holiness, to the world. He
stressed that we must safeguard the holiness in our
homes, in our schools and in our communities
because “ kedusha is spiraling out of control.”
The evening concluded with a passionate
Selichot service. Thank you to Rabbi
Nightingale of the Aish Centre in Hollywood and to
Rabbi Shapiro for his inspiring words.

Summer Experience Part III
|
|
by Yoni Brander ('07)
This summer I, along with David Atkin (’07),
Ben Shai (’07) and Oren Hizkiya (’07), spent my
summer in Israel on NCSY’s Summer Kollel in Beit
Meir. We were only four of over 200 teenage boys
who came for a summer of sports, touring, and most
importantly, learning.
The learning was led by two of our Gedolai
Hador, giants of our generation, Yeshiva
University’s Rav Shachter and Rav Twerski. In
addition to the shiurim and
chaburot we attended every day, Oren,
Ben and I were fortunate enough to have had the
opportunity to learn the Torah of the Chazon
Ish with Rav Twerski every morning.
Basketball is a staple of Kollel, which has its own
competitive intramural team that practices and plays
during down-time. While some teams were graced
with Yeshiva League superstars, mine and David’s
team was lead by none other than former WYHS staff
member, Rabbi Schneider, who impressed us all with
his midot and his jump shot. Kollel also took
us on amazing trips throughout Israel—
Masada, Eilat, and Sfat are just a few of the
highlights.
A combination of all these elements made this
summer in Israel a truly rewarding and
inspirational experience. NCSY Kollel instilled
within its participants a love for Israel and
Torah and has tremendously impacted both
me and my friends.

Girls Volleyball Season Comes to an End
|
|
by Jennifer Fisher ('07)
As the season sadly came to a close this
Thursday, the girls volleyball team can proudly say
that each player has made tremendous
improvements over the past couple of months.
We would like to thank our amazing coach, Arnaldo
Jagle. He has taught us how to play “real volleyball,”
how to make this sport more than just bumping a ball
around. Without him, we would have never been as
successful throughout the entire season.
Thank you,
Coach!!
We played Boca Christian and Boca Prep this past
Tuesday and Thursday, two games that proved to be
great season closers. Tuesday’s game at Boca
Christian truly proved how great our team has
become—although Boca Christian is ranked first
in the
division, we played as fair opponents and didn’t
lose without a fight. Leah Bensimon (’07) broke
each of Boca Christian’s powerful serves with ease
and Stephanie Trachtenberg (’07) set the ball with
flawless accuracy.
Thursday's game at Boca Prep brought the team full
circle, and allowed individual players to display their
well-honed skills. Jordana Kaminetsky (’07)
and Jen Fisher’s (’07) passing kept the score
incredibly close as Malka Hizkiya (’07) spiked the ball
with an amazing show of power and precision.
Although the volleyball season is over, it has truly
been our best year yet, and we are all sad
to say good bye to such an amazing experience.
