From the desk of Rabbi Perry
Tirschwell
A bigger and better WYHS greeted its
students this week! The largest freshman class ever,
the largest student body ever, the earliest dismissal
times ever, the most electives offered ever, and the
list goes on. May G-d give us the ability to actualize
the great plans we have for what will no doubt be
the best year in WYHS history.
Our excitement was tinged with sadness as
the enormity of the disaster in New Orleans and the
gulf states unfolded. The students have planned a
fitting program for this morning.
It is my pleasure to introduce the new Yeshiva
High-lites staff- Editor Rabbi Josh Spodek,
Student Council Vice President Jordy Kaminetsky
(’07), Chief of Correspondents Chava Rubin (’07), and
Copy Editor Shira Borzak (’07). They are joining
Director of Technology Mrs. Claudia Cohen in
producing this fantastic weekly newsletter. I deeply
appreciate them taking my “baby” to new
heights.
Meet the Teacher Night and the College,
Seminary and Yeshiva Application Seminar for
seniors and their parents will take place, G-d willing,
this coming Wednesday, September 7 at 7:30 p.m.
Parents will learn how to schedule their Parent
Teacher Conferences, which can only be scheduled
this year on line with our web based system.
As always, just hit "reply" to this e-mail if you have
anything you would like to discuss or share with me.

Our Largest Freshman Class Ever
|
|
by Ali Cristina ('07)
This year’s freshman class is the largest
yet consisting of 51 students. The class of 2009
comes from all over South Florida from West Palm
Beach to Miami Beach, and even as far north as
Jacksonville. This year the freshmen had an
opportunity to get familiar with WYHS, even before
classes started. On Thursday, August 25, the
freshmen had their first orientation where they met
and mingled with the Student Council while eating
pizza and making ice cream sundaes. Student Council
then held an exciting “icebreaker” game
which helped ease the first day jitters of
the “newbies.” The fun game encouraged WYHS’
newest students to befriend and talk to kids they
didn’t previously know .
In addition to all that fun, the freshmen met
administration members who spoke to the students
about the rules and regulations of the school. The
freshmen met with our learning specialist, Ms. Dana
Sardano, who led a workshop about study and
organizational skills.
Due to last week’s hurricane, the Big
Brother/ Big Sister Program was postponed until
Monday. An exciting event for both grades involved,
the Big Brother/ Big Sister Program paired each junior
with one or two freshmen, in order to help the ninth
graders feel comfortable in their new school.
Monday's orientation for the entire student
body began with a tasty BBQ where students were
able to catch up with their friends and teachers and
share their summer experiences. After the BBQ,
everyone was privileged to hear inspiring words from
the founder of our school, Rabbi Kenneth Brander,
and our Associate Principal, Mrs. Ora Lee Kanner. In
addition, our principal Rabbi Perry Tirschwell spoke
about this year’s school wide goal: Building
Bridges With Words. This year we want to
establish better communication amongst everyone in
the entire school, including faculty, students and
parents.
After the orientation, the Big Brother/ Big
Sister Program took place. The freshmen and juniors
hopped on a bus to go bowling, which proved to be a
great opening for the freshmen to meet and get to
know their “big siblings” while having a great time.
Following this program, there will be a number of
other great programs coming up within the next few
months for all the “siblings” in the program.

New Members of the WYHS Team
|
|
by Chava Rubin ('07)
This year is already off to an amazing
start and it is expected to be exciting and
stimulating, both academically and spiritually. The
administration has made some significant changes
and has set new goals for the school. One significant
change has been the addition of several new
faculty members. These new and experienced
teachers are enhancing our school’s level of learning
and strengthening the teacher-student relationships.
Similarly, WYHS is looking to redouble its efforts
towards better communication with faculty, parents
and students.
The entire faculty met at a teacher
orientation prior to the onset of the school year.
Many of the new and returning faculty members had
an opportunity to interact and become acquainted
with one another.
The following is a breakdown and
explanation of the responsibilities of every new
member of our WYHS staff:
New Judaic Faculty:
Rabbi Allan Houben teaches boys Gemara,
Chumash and Navi as well as girls Tefillah. Rabbi
Houben comes to us fresh from Yeshiva University’s
smicha program and is also a member of the Boca
Raton Community Kollel.
Rabbi Moshe Schochet, after serving in the Kollel
for the past three years and frequently substituting
at WYHS, has joined our faculty to teach boys
Gemara and Navi classes and girls Torah She Baal
Peh.
Mrs. Maggie Dayan, an accomplished and
experienced teacher from Israel, substituted regularly
at WYHS this past year, and has now joined the
WYHS Hebrew faculty for both the boys and girls
classes.
Mrs. Heather Andron, a young and energetic
member of the Boca Raton Synagogue community, is
WYHS’ first Chesed Coordinator.
New College Preparatory
Faculty:
Dr. Ronald Schwartz, a professor at Florida
Atlantic University, teaches upperclassmen Pre-
Calculus and AP Calculus.
Mr. Eugene Prisament, a veteran high school
instructor, teaches Algebra I and Physics.
Mrs. Heidi Segal, who joins us from the University
School at Nova, teaches Geometry, Algebra II and
Statistics.
Some of the returning faculty members have
assumed expanded roles and new titles,
including: Associate Principal Mrs. Ora Lee Kanner,
Director of College Preparatory Studies Mr. Adam
Dobrick, Director of Technology Mrs. Claudia Cohen,
and Athletic Director Coach Jon Kaweblum.
We would also like to welcome a new
member to our staff, Rabbi Mordechai Smolarcik, who
will be serving as the school’s Database and
Edline Coordinator.
With our new and returning staff as well as
the new changes and improvements, this year
promises to be our best one yet.

Students Get Involved
|
|
by Tuvia Brander and Sahar Zaghi ('06)
Student Council is up and running, and is
looking forward to a promising year. This year’s
dynamic Student Council features some
experienced faces, like co-president Tuvia Brander
(’06) and junior class representatives Raquel Amram
(’07) and Jason Mann (’07). In addition there are
many new members including co- president Sahar
Zaghi (’06), vice presidents Ali Christina (’07), Jordy
Kaminetsky (’07), Meir Weiss (’07) and Avi Lasko
(’07), senior class representatives Sarah Dray (’06)
and Zach Cohen (’06), and sophomore
representatives Leora Cohen (’08) and Tehilla Weiss
(’08). Freshman representatives will be elected to
the council at the beginning of November.
Each member has already devoted countless
hours throughout the summer to ensure a smooth
and exciting start to the new year. This group of
dedicated and talented individuals is focused on
working with the administration and faculty as well as
their fellow classmates to make certain that all our
student’s needs are brought to light and attended to.
The council is committed to enhancing the overall
success and happiness of our students and will
work diligently on behalf of the entire student body.
In addition, Student Council is focused on
increasing student participation and involvement in
the running of our school’s many programs and trips.
Already in the first week of school, eager students
rushed to join one or two of the twelve great
student-led committees. This year, unlike any
before, the list of committees highlights different
talents found in our diverse student body, providing
opportunities for our students to develop and
actualize their leadership skills and qualities.
New to the list this year, the Highlites Committee
allows students to write weekly articles, choose
weekly topics and edit the weekly installments.
Similarly, the new Tech Committee helps the more
technologically-inclined students to participate in
programs that incorporate the use of computers,
sound systems and multi media presentations.
Student Council is not the only student
group to accomplish so much at such an early stage
of the year. A committed and responsible
yearbook staff has been hard at work
throughout the summer months, and has already held
several meetings to guarantee that this year’s
yearbook will be a creative and exceptional one. The
staff, supervised by our Director of Technology Mrs.
Claudia Cohen, is headed by senior editor Jen Adler
(’06). Jen works with assistant editors Mordechai
Siev (’06), Mimi Begas (’06), Moshe Genet (’06),
Yocheved Popiol (’06), and Ori Matilsky (’06). The
team has already chosen a theme, and has begun
the staggering task of collecting pictures from the
senior class. With such a strong and productive
staff, the yearbook is sure to be a great
success.

STORM Take The Field
|
|
by Stephanie Trachtenberg ('07)
Under the leadership and guidance of our
new athletic director, Mr. Jon Kaweblum, our
Storm sport’s season has gotten off to a great
start. The fall season of girls volleyball and boys
soccer begins in early August and many of our
dedicated athletes began practicing weeks before
school began.
The girls’ volleyball team has put together a
strong squad led by their new coach Mr. Arnaldo
Jagle, who brings a wealth of experience in both
playing and coaching to the team. This year’s
captain, Malka Hizkiya (’07), hopes to do her best to
put an end to the losing streak that began last year
and the team is already demonstrating a lot of
potential and talent. Although the Storm did not
win their first game of the season against Boca
Christian, who is one of the best teams in the region,
every player agreed that they had a great time and
are looking forward to improving their skills for future
games. The volleyball team hopes to see more fans
at the games because “it motivates us to do our
best," says Malka Hizkiya, who later added that she
was extremely happy with this year’s new and
improved volleyball uniforms.
The boys’ soccer team, led by Mr. Ozzy
Oliveira, showed much dedication and love for
their sport by practicing during the summer, and
by playing their first game of the season before
school began. The boys’ first game was against the
third ranked team in the district. Although it ended in
a 4-1 loss, the Storm hopes to improve that score in
a rematch scheduled for later in the season. The
second game, which was played this past Tuesday
night, ended in a tough loss for our boys. However,
it demonstrated the players’ commitment and the
devotion of their fans, such as Judaic Studies
teacher Mrs. Amy Horowitz.
In Thursday night’s game the Storm took
control from the opening whistle and soundly beat
their opponents, Florida Bible, 5-0! This amazing
victory was due in large part to Jordan Lieber’s
(’06) unbelievable hat trick and newcomer Daniel
Poliak’s (’06) solid defense. Veteran Jason Mann (’07)
added that "everyone played great while both the
defense and the offense were clicking and working
hard.”
It has been a great start to WYHS’s athletic
season and we would like to encourage all
parents and students alike to come out and cheer on
our Storm teams.
