From the desk of Rabbi Perry

Lag B’omer is this coming Tuesday! To
address the lack of concern for others which the
Omer period of mourning commemorates, we
have planned a morning full of chesed
(community service) activities. Please
encourage your children to participate.
Because the Lag B’omer activities are taking
place at 7 locations throughout Broward County,
students from Miami Beach, NMB and Hollywood
will daven at the Young Israel of Hollywood at
8:30am. The first pickups of the buses will be at
7:30 in Miami Beach and 7:45 in North Miami Beach.
Davening in Boca will be at 8:00 am. The
students will return to both the Young Israel and
WYHS by 12:45pm. The NMB and Miami Beach
students will leave then from Hollywood.
We’ve got a great program planned for this
weekend’s
Freshmen Shabbaton in Galt Ocean
Mile. The students will be returning
Saturday night between 10:00 and 10:30pm to both
Boca and Hollywood, and between 10:30 and
11:00pm to NMB and Miami Beach.
Textbook collection is on the horizon. Seniors will
return their college preparatory texts this Monday,
May 15. Underclassmen will return their texts during
their final exams on Friday, June 9. Students who
have lost a textbook must pay the replacement
cost before taking the exam.
Mazel tov to Humanities Department
Chairperson Mrs. Carla Greer on being appointed
as a reader for SAT I essays. This will give us
great insight into how we can help
our students shine as brightly as they can on their
college boards.
Shabbat Shalom

Alumni are Close to WYHS' Heart! Inspirational Big Apple Shabbaton
|
by Rachel Dolgow ('04), Melissa Marder
('04), & Jessica Struhl ('04)
This past weekend, beloved Judaic studies
faculty member Mrs. Amy Horowitz shared a
memorable Shabbat with the alumni
girls in New York City at Stern College for the annual
reunion Shabbaton.
There was a great turnout of girls who came
together for a weekend of old friends and memories
that many of us shared together in our high school
days. It was especially great spending time and
touching base with Mrs. Horowitz who brought a
smile
to everyone's faces as we remembered all the
amazing times we spent with her. It was
comforting to know that someone from WYHS is
always there for us.
The Shabbos was set by the beautiful
words of Torah shared, from a touching d’var
Torah given by Elana Kastzl (’04) to Mrs.
Horowitz’s enlightening mini-shiur.
Everyone present spent their time, staying up late
into the night, singing, talking, sharing and
reminiscing.
All the alumni are so grateful to the school for
sending Mrs. Horowitz to host the alumni reunion
and for having her share her knowledge and warmth
with us once again!

Write On! Students Win Writing Awards
|
by Alexa Bryn ('08)
Last Thursday night, 11 teens and their families
gathered at the Adolph and Rose Levis JCC for the
7th Annual Wolens Jewish Writing Competition awards
ceremony. Shira Borzak (’07), Kayla Kowal (’09), and
I were awarded 1st place winners in 11th and 12th
grade prose, 11th and 12th grade poetry, and 9th
and 10th grade poetry, respectively. Students
were asked to write about an issue in Jewish heritage
including Israel experiences, Jewish life cycle events
and youth group activities.
The Wolens Writing Competition is
named for Sylvia Wolens, a truly remarkable woman
whose love of writing and literature was paralleled
only by her great love for the Jewish community and
tradition. It was through our writing on subjects
dealing with our Jewish heritage and identity, a
subject which she held so dear, that her family
continues to honor her memory.
The awards were given out by Mr.
Wolens, husband of the late Sylvia. He congratulated
each winner personally and was genuinely thrilled to
be a part of the ceremony. To me, more important
than the monetary prize and recognition was the
look of joy on Mr. Wolens face as he continued to
honor his wife’s memory. It was especially
thrilling to feel that our school’s award recipients
played a part in honoring the memory of such a great
woman.
Enjoy the three winners essays
below, and Congratulations to all the winners!

Say Cheese! Photography Club Takes Field Trip
|
CLICK ON THE PICTURE FOR A GREAT
SLIDESHOW
by Alana Dweck ('09)
Thursday, May 4th, the WYHS photography club,
led by our own director of technology, Claudia
Cohen, went on a field trip to the
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden to view the
beautiful
surroundings and take pictures of the Chihuly glass
sculptures exhibit. These intricate works of art
proved to be a most fascinating photography
subject and great opportunity to learn more
about photography first hand.
We had a blast taking pictures and learning
how to use both light and dark to our advantage
while capturing the perfect photo. We all had an
amazing time and cannot wait to go on another trip
to put our shutter skills to action. Thanks to Claudia
Cohen for making this extraordinary trip possible and
for being such a great photography teacher!
