It was an awesome sight! Over 1000 professional and lay leaders from Jewish day schools across the spectrum and continent gathered in Boston this week for the PEJE Day School Conference. We walked away with many ideas, and were gratified to learn of the high regard in which our school is held.

We have a really busy week ahead;

Sunday- Monday Sophomore Trip to the Keys.

Monday is the 2nd Annual America Eats for Israel day, when kosher restaurants donate 10% of their proceeds to an Israeli charity. Thanks to Shira Borzak ('07), Rachey Berkowitz ('07) and Yocheved Popiol ('06) for coordinating this program. See the flyer below.

Tuesday evening is the WYHS Founders Dinner at Bnai Torah on SW 18th Street. A buffet dinner will be served from 6:00-7:30pm, followed by the program and dessert. For questions, please click here.

Wednesday is WYHS’ production of Woody Allen’s “Don’t Drink the Water” at 7:30pm at the Crest Theatre in Delray Beach (I-95 to Atlantic, east to Swinton, theatre is less than a block north up on your right). Click here, call the school, or come to the door for tickets.

Thursday is Rosh Chodesh Nisan and a round robin of Pre-Passover classes in memory of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik will be presented by guest speakers.

Thursday-Monday is Yeshiva University’s Boys Varsity Basketball Red Saracheck Touranment in New York. Listen to the Yeshiva Storm on macslive.com.

Shabbat Shalom

Im Lo Achshav EIMATAI”
Students Participate In
Leadership Conference

by Jordana Kaminetsky ('07)

This past week, five members of student council, President Tuvia Brander (’06), Vice Presidents Ali Cristina (’07), Jordana Kaminetsky (’07), Meir Weiss (’07) and Junior Class President Raquel Amram (’07) had the privilege of attending Eimatai, Yeshiva University’s semi-annual leadership conference for high school students.

This year’s conference, held right here in Plantation, began on Sunday and featured two straight days of programs designed specifically to encourage students to become active contributors within their community. Along with sixty-five other students attending Yeshiva day schools from New York to Texas and everywhere in between, WYHS students discussed pertinent issues that occur not only within one’s own area, but also within the global Jewish community.

The participants attended “buzz meetings” and discussed important issues with fellow students and YU/Stern advisors. We also heard from renowned speakers such as Dr. Lazzon, Rabbi Rothchild and Rabbi Brander who talked about ways to improve our leadership qualities and ways to take action.

The conference culminated in group presentations made by each school. Every high school brainstormed and developed a new program that they wished to bring back to their own schools. Great ideas such as “Food for Israel” and “Pennies for Change” were presented.

Eimatai was definitely a great learning experience for all of us. It has further motivated us to become better leaders in our school and more active participants within our own Jewish community.

NOBO’s Enjoy BBQ And
Time With WYHS Faculty

by Jackie Itzkowitz (’08)

This past Sunday, the families and students who live north of Boca, or the NOBOS (the North Of BOca community) welcomed the WYHS Judaic staff and their families into the home of Aaron and Naomi Itzkowitz, parents of Jackie Itzkowitz (’08) for a friendly BBQ. All who attended had loads of fun spending time outside of school with one another eating, playing ball and boating in the Boynton Beach community lake.

The barbeque was a great opportunity for the staff and their families to meet and interact with the families who live north of Boca. This day was very memorable because it recognized the growing number of students who commute southward each day to WYHS.

Mrs. Itzkowitz spoke at the end of the event and expressed her gratitude to the WYHS staff for attending and for the wonderful high school experience they help provide for their daughter.

I really appreciated all the teachers and their families taking time to come to my house and getting to know one another. I know next year’s NOBO barbeque will be even bigger and better!

Cans Of Tuna, Mishloach Manot
And One Big Tzedakah Check

by Mrs. Heather Andron
Chesed Coordinator

The live teacher goods and services auction this past Chanukah was our most successful tzedakah drive to date. Over the last few months, the tzedakah committee has been busy collecting all the money from the winning bidders. Finally this past week, Jen Adler (’06), Tzedakah Committee co-chair, presented a check for a whopping $2,121.50 to Deborah Gold, assistant director of Sha’arei Tzedek Hospital in Jerusalem and Ronnie Amster, regional director for the American Committee for Sha’arei Tzedek. This money will go towards the maternity ward and will help purchase warming blankets for the thousands of newborns delivered each year at Sha’arei Tzedek Hospital. Thank you to all the students who generously bid and pledged money for this campaign.

Since Purim, we have been collecting a mountain of leftover Mishloach Manot that will be going to the less fortunate through Caring Delray in Delray Beach. Bags and bags of leftover candy and goodies came pouring into the school from all of the students. Thank you to everyone who brought in food and to Jordana Kaminetsky (’07) for arranging this incredible drive.

The Chesed Committee launched their newest campaign recently—tuna fish! The Forster Family Kosher Food Pantry in Boca Raton services hundreds of families in the Boca Raton area and requested our help in feeding the hungry. Students have been bringing in cans of tuna all week, and you can still help this worthy cause by bringing in more tuna cans next week.
