“If I Had a Hammer” Juniors and Seniors Build Homes For The Homeless
|
|
by Ali Cristina (’07) Student Council Vice
President
This past Sunday, WYHS students were
given an incredible Chesed opportunity. Juniors
and seniors volunteered with Habitat for Humanity,
an
organization that assists in building homes for the
less fortunate.
Once we arrived at the site, we were given
hammers,
nails and building gear and got right to work.
Everyone was extremely involved working on
rooftops, climbing rafters and digging out a
driveway, all the while having a great time. As
the work progressed and the development of the
house became more and more apparent, everyone
working felt an amazing sense of accomplishment.
Our hard work was paying off right
before our very eyes as the house began to
take
form. This project was made so much more
meaningful and emotional by having the eventual
owner of the house on site building with us.
This Chesed project was not only fun, but was also
an inspiring and moving experience for all of
us. I would like to personally thank all those
students who selflessly gave up their Sunday to help
others and look forward to seeing many more
students at our next building opportunity.
This Chesed venture could not have been possible
without the tireless efforts of Chesed coordinator
Mrs. Heather Andron and my fellow student Chesed
coordinator Yoni San Solo (’07).

Whipped Cream, Thunder Sticks and One Memorable Bus Ride Juniors Have an Amazing Night Out

FOR A GREAT
SLIDESHOW
by Chava Rubin ('07)
The class of 2007 completely rocked on their
Junior Night Out at the Florida Panthers hockey
game, which proved to be the most amazing
bonding experience yet.
The night started as everyone gathered for
a delicious pizza and ice cream dinner. Of course, no
ice cream party would be complete without an array
of toppings, syrup and whipped cream which
students tremendously enjoyed.
Following dinner, class president Raquel
Amram (’07) introduced the ‘Junior Grab Bag’
program. Every single student chose a name out of
a
bag and will exchange gifts (valued at less than $5)
with their mystery friend at a class breakfast during
Chanukah. This program will undoubtedly help
create new bonds between the members of the
class.
The thrilling hockey game was a first for
many Juniors. Chaperoned by hockey enthusiast
Rabbi Spodek, Rabbi and Mrs. Grossman and Rabbi
Sugerman, each of the juniors had amazing ruach
cheering and singing together for the victorious
Panthers. The game was an excellent
opportunity for students to spend time together in an
informal environment and to get to know each other
on a more personal level.
The night concluded with a memorable bus
ride where we shared and swapped stories from the
night and took loads of pictures. Kudos to Student
Council Representative Raquel Amram (’07) who put
this truly unforgettable bonding experience together.
Thanks for the best night out ever!

FOR A GREAT
SLIDESHOW
by Shira Poliak ('08)
On Monday
evening, the sophomore class boarded buses for
a
much anticipated class night out of fun and
bonding at Boomers of Dania Beach. Upon arrival we
enjoyed a delectable dinner of pizza and soda and
proceeded to practically take over Boomers.
The sophomores spent the evening zooming
on go-carts, playing miniature golf and competing in
laser tag creating memories and moments that
will last a lifetime. In true WYHS style many
pictures were taken, many laughs were shared and
much fun was had.
The class of 2008 could not have enjoyed such an
amazing night without the continual efforts and
dedication of our class representatives, Leora
Cohen (’08) and Tehilah Weiss (’08). Thank you to
Rabbi Spodek, Mrs. Horowitz and Coach Kaweblum for
chaperoning this event and spending quality time
with
us.
Monday’s night out, however, does not end our class’
festivities. There are still many more sophomore
events in the making. The class is busy planning our
sophomore trip to the Florida Keys, which is sure to
be an amazing experience. In addition,
fundraising projects are well under way with plans to
sell candy platters for Shabbat gifts and to host a
pre-Purim garage sale.
We hope that everyone will participate in supporting
our sophomore class! Please see Leora or Tehilah for
more details or updates.

Democracy in Action Freshman Elect Student Council Representatives
|
|
This past
Friday,
two new additions to the WYHS student
council, Holly Hampton (‘09) and Josh
Kaminetsky (‘09) were elected as representatives for
the freshman class.
After an intense week of campaigning with flyers,
doughnuts, and even flowers, the candidates were
each given three minutes to speak as an opportunity
to convey to their fellow classmates what their own
strengths and platforms were. Each of the four male
candidates and the three female candidates
delivered excellent speeches, which included
their past experiences and plans for the
future.
The class then voted in a secret ballot election, and
after much anticipation and excitement, the
votes were tallied and the two new representatives
were named.
As the newly elected class representatives, Holly and
Josh have many goals for the freshman class over
these next six months. They are already in the midst
of organizing a class night out and are working with a
number of classmates on two fundraising projects.
The pair is also committed to run an amazing class
trip, all to make this the best year ever for the
class of 2009!
We would like to thank all the candidates for running
and wish to congratulate Holly and Josh on a job well
done.

"Education is Freedom" David Bensmihen Memorial Scholarship
|
|
by Shimmie Kaminetsky Executive
Director
This past Tuesday morning, staff and students joined
together to commemorate
the yahrzeit of David Bensmihen z”l.
Joseph “JB” and Lisa Bensmihen of Boca Raton have
created a scholarship at WYHS in memory of JB’s
father. Each year the David Bensmihen Memorial
Scholarship provides financial assistance to a number
of students who exhibit a strong desire to
study both
Judaic and College Preparatory studies for the sake
of
learning, and who are dedicated to chesed
activities in the community. Bensmihen
Scholarships will be awarded to six students
annually.
Following davening this past Tuesday morning
(which was led by JB), the
Bensmihen family sponsored a hot breakfast for the
entire school. JB spoke movingly about his father
and
how his father went to the greatest lengths to
ensure that his children received a Jewish and
general education. “Education is freedom”
was one of
his father’s guiding principles.
The guest speaker for the special occasion was
Yeshiva University professor Rabbi Yamin Levy, who
gave an excellent shiur on Chanukah in which
he
developed the theory that one of the messages of
Chanukah is that Torah observance must lead to
peace within the Jewish community.

FOR A GREAT
SLIDESHOW
by Rachey Berkowitz ('07)
The girls JV Storm
basketball team, the
newest addition to the WYHS sports lineup, has
proved to be a powerful force on the
courts. The JV team is an
eclectic mix of dedicated players from the freshman,
sophomore and junior classes.
One key part of our team is Coach Heather
Andron, who has not only taught us great basketball
skills and amazing moves on the court, but more
importantly has taught us how to be a team and
become better people.
Although we lost our first four games, this
past
Tuesday night’s game against FAU High was a
giant leap towards victory. We played strong
throughout only losing by six. Ari Struhl (’09) scored
a
whopping 20 points and played consistently strong
defense. Gaby Markovitch (‘09) had a remarkable
game with 11 points while Hadar Gerlitz (’09)
played incredible defense consistently shutting down
our opponents.
Thursday’s night game against Hebrew
Academy clearly showed the team how close we
are to victory, losing by a mere two points in
the
last 20 seconds of the game.
Every single player has contributed to
our
rapid improvement, and we are excited about
the remainder of our season. Come out and cheer on
your Girls JV Basketball Team!!
