From the desk of Rabbi Perry
Tirschwell
We’re serious about Chesed / community
service at WYHS. Just this week, our seniors
began to participate in a Chai Lifeline big brother
program to aid children with life threatening diseases,
packed donated clothes for the needy in Israel, and
this Sunday students will be building homes for the
homeless for Habit for Humanity. It’s all due to our
tireless Chesed Coordinator, Mrs. Heather
Andron.
To train our students to make helping others a
priority in their lives, we require them to perform 10
hours of community service after school hours each
trimester. On the report cards which they will
receive
this coming week, students will receive a pass
or fail
grade. Students who receive an F for their final
grade in June, have the summer to make it up.
Students will not be able to start school next
fall until they have completed their community
service requirement from the previous year.
The entire school will be taking out time from their
studies to share the energy of Chanukah with
others
at a potpourri of Chesed programs on the
morning of Tuesday, December 27.
Shabbat Shalom

Bisli, Bamba and Yerushalayim Shel Zahav CIA Brings Israel to WYHS
|
|
by Kayla Kowal ('06)
This past Tuesday, the school turned its clocks
forward seven hours, not because of some obscure
Daylight Savings Time rule, but so that the entire
school would be on Israel time. The first ever
Hebrew Day organized by the CIA, The
Committee for Israel Action, also featured an
Israeli breakfast, a selection of Israeli snacks to
purchase throughout the day, Israeli music over the
loudspeakers and Judaic classes taught in Hebrew.
The CIA is a committee led by Steven Marin
('06), Ziyona Rantz
('06), Amy Milin ('06) and myself. It is made
up of devoted students who aim to instill an
awareness of current events in Israel and a love for
Israel in their peers. This week's Hebrew Day
was a success, infusing the day with Israeli culture
and fulfilling CIA's mission.
In addition to Hebrew Day, CIA runs a
number of other projects throughout the year. This
Israel awareness committee also presents the Israel
updates on a weekly basis, arranges Israel related
speakers to come to the school and runs an
updated ticker in the school hallway providing the
latest news about Israel. The CIA board is full of
interesting facts and stimulating pictures of Israel.
CIA also supports social action to help
our brethren in Israel. Students have been bringing in
clothing to donate to
the thousands of refugees from Gush Katif,
many of
whom are still homeless. This week, students got
together after school to pack and ship the clothing
which will arrive for the families just in time for
Chanukah. As you can tell, CIA is very
active in
the school's educational and chesed
opportunities. It encourages all students to
take action and support Israel.
One can contact the CIA committee for
questions and ideas by email at CIAction@gmail.com

Students Train To Be Passionate Advocates For Israel
|
|
by Mordechai Siev ('06)
This past week, five of our seniors, Steven Marin,
Amy Milin, Devorah Greer, Yocheved Popiol and
myself were given the opportunity of a
lifetime by attending the Panim el
Panim Israeli Advocacy Seminar. Panim el
Panim is a high school program sponsored by AIPAC -
The American-Israel Public Affairs Committee.
97 teenagers from all over the country spent
three days in Washington D.C. exploring public
policy, US and Israeli politics and activism
through a Jewish lens. Orthodox, Conservative,
Reform and unaffiliated Jews all joined together to
attend seminars, hold panel discussions, and debate
Israel related topics.
Speakers included Rabbi Infeld, founder of the
Hillel movement prevalent on many college campuses,
and other prominent rabbis and politicians. We had
the opportunity to work closely with Panim and
AIPAC with regards to several issues relating to
Israeli policy. Culminating in a trip to Capital Hill, this
seminar equipped us with the tools to become
successful participants in the political process,
developing skills to lobby members of Congress
and to run effective Israel related programs at our
school.
These three days were an incredible
educational experience for us. Devorah,
Yocheved, Amy, Steve and I would like to extend a
tremendous thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Milin, who
sponsored the entire trip.

"And The Survey Says" Statistics Class Implements What They Learned
|
|
It is always a challenge for teachers to develop
instructional, thought provoking yet meaningful
projects for their students. This past week, Mrs.
Heidi
Segal's Senior statistics class was given an
assignment that gave them the opportunity to
put their knowledge about surveys into practice
with an exciting project.
The goal of the project was to give the students
an idea of the time and effort that goes into
creating a survey that is free of bias in representing
any given population. The students were divided
into groups, and each group had to come up with a
survey question that was relevant to our school
community. The group was required to sample
an accurate representation of the student body and
faculty and present their results to the rest of the
class.
Each group had extremely creative and
thoughtful presentations that clearly
demonstrated their effort and skills. One group went
so far as to hand out samples of breakfast cereals
during their presentation of their survey
titled, "Would you like more of a variety with the
school breakfast?"
Other surveys that were taken included "What is
your favorite lunch?", "How long does it take to get
to school?", "Should there be testing in Judaic
Studies?", "Should students be allowed to eat during
class?" and "How many hours do you spend each
night
studying?"
The results varied from predictable to
surprising. All in all the projects were an
educational, informative and fun experience
for all involved.

Boys JV Basketball Growing Together As A Team
|
|
CLICK
HERE
FOR A GREAT
SLIDESHOW
by Doron David ('09)
This year, the boys JV Basketball team is made
up
of a number of players from every grade. The boys
have been working hard and practicing regularly.
With the commitment and dedication of the
players and the leadership of coach Brian
Weems, this group of athletes promises to be a force
on the courts.
This past Tuesday night, the JV Storm suffered a
nail biting loss to Pope John Paul II with a score of
52-50. WYHS led for most of the game until the last
two minutes when PJPII took the lead for good. The
Storm played their hearts out with
outstanding performances by Yakir Bitterman ('06)
who scored 18 points and Areyh Genet ('08) who put
up 13 points. Ronnie Rosenbaum ('08) played
incredible defense, and Max Singer ('09) hit a clutch
3-pointer with 13 seconds left in the game to put us
down by one.
Although the team got off to a slow start,
Thursday's 54-45 victory over Grandview Prep
demonstrated our consistent improvement and
desire to win. Once again, Aryeh Genet ('08)
scored an unbelievable 18 points and had an amazing
7 steals. Eitan Heering ('08) was unstoppable under
the net with 17 rebounds, while David Belolo ('07)
played solid defense and helped seal the JV Storms
first victory of the season.
Please join us this Saturday night, 8:00 pm,
as
we take on Trinity at Pompey Park.
Directions
to the game are on Edline.
