From the desk of Rabbi Perry
Tirschwell
As I said to the students on Monday, we who
experienced the events of the past
week and a half can never take the simple things
in life for
granted- the milk that we drink, the gas that
makes
our cars run, the water that comes out of our tap, a
cold drink, hot food, a traffic light, a street light, a
working phone, or a beautiful tree.
Our hearts go out to the students, teachers and
their families who are still without power. Thank G-d,
we were able to run an appropriately scaled down
week of school, which ended on a great note with
our first chagiga of the year. Next week
our
academic and extracurricular schedule goes back to
normal,
with the exception of a 3:00pm dismissal on Monday
before Parent Teacher Conferences.
Today through noon Sunday, parents have their
last
chance to schedule parent teacher conferences
for
this coming Monday night, November 7. Tuesday
through Friday, you will have your last chance to
schedule conferences for the second night, Tuesday,
November 15.

"Lights! Camera! Action!” Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan Chagigah

FOR A GREAT
SLIDESHOW
by Chava Rubin ('07)
“Lights! Camera! Action!” This was the theme of this
month’s Rosh Chodesh chagigah, the first
one of the year! Thursday morning, the entire
school gathered in the ballroom in order to welcome
with great enthusiasm Cheshvan. With
amazing dancing and inspirational divrei Torah,
one could really feel the ruach and spirit
overflowing in the room.
Starting off with a hearty breakfast, the action
quickly moved onto the dance floor where the entire
student body came together with heartfelt and
energetic dancing. The live music was provided
by our very own Under Construction band!
Since the theme of the chagigah and the
month is “lights, camera, action,” the room was
beautifully adorned with black and white
decorations to further the theme of movies and film.
Senior Sarah Dray (’06) gave a very motivating
d’var Torah about the need to take “action” in
our own lives to really make a change during this
quiet month following the jam-packed holiday season.
Quoting pesukim from Tanach and
using personal examples, Sarah was able to
communicate a powerful message to the entire
student body.
Thanks so much to Rabbi Spodek, Avi Lasko and the
entire Rosh Chodesh Committee on working
so
hard to make this Rosh Chodesh such an
amazing success.

Students Provide Hurricane Wilma Relief
|
|
by Mrs. Heather Andron
Chesed
Director
This past Wednesday, 26 WYHS students
participated in Hurricane Wilma relief efforts at
Century Village of Boca Raton. As soon as our
students arrived, they were ready to work. Bringing
food, water, ice and smiles to the residents, our
students made an immediate difference to all
they visited.
Working in small groups, our students were able to
reach almost a hundred residents, many who
are home bound. In addition to bringing supplies, our
students provided assistance in other areas including
changing light bulbs, setting up hurricane lamps and
taking out garbage.
This experience was a “win-win” situation for
all those involved. The residents were thrilled to
have our students visit them because many of them
are lonely and still sitting in the dark. In turn, our
students were able to reach out to those who are
still suffering from post-Wilma difficulties and make a
Kidddush Hashem.
“The residents were so happy to see us and have
the
company,” said Alyssa Muckley (’07). “This
experience was very rewarding!” Many residents
thanked the students and wanted to know what they
could do in return. Clearly the residents and
the students had a meaningful experience!
Yasher Koach to Danny Aiken, Elan Aiken,
Gaby Markovitch, Jonathan Odiz, Aleeza Rubin,
Danielle Wolkowicz, Avital Abir, Yocheved Tirschwell,
Alyssa Muckley, Hadas Avisar, Yakir Bitterman, Zack
Cohen, Melly Drachman, Sarah Dray, Moshe Genet,
Yael Hirth, Dov Lieber, Jordan Lieber, Raquel
Mendlelow, Ori Matilsky, Yocheved Popiol, Ilana
Singer, Esti Skurowitz, Nicole Tryfus and Sahar Zaghi
for a job well done! Kol Hakavod!

Sukkot Experience in the Holy Land
|
|
by Jordana Kaminetsky ('07)
This past Sukkot my family and I had the privilege of
spending a significant amount of time in Israel.
Although I have been fortunate enough to have been
there many times before, I find that each trip is
uniquely special.
My family traveled with a group of friends,
which included a lot of kids my age with whom I
could
experience Israel. During our stay, our extended
group took tiyulim all over the
country. We made techelet, the
rediscovered dye extracted from snails that is used
on the strings of the tzitzit. We drove around
the countryside in ATVs (all-terrain vehicles), and we
learned how to shoot real guns.
However much fun I had doing all of these activities,
the most interesting and inspiring part of the
trip for me was my visit to The Aaronson Museum in
Zichron Ya’akov. I learned there about Sarah
Aaronson, a “Nili” spy for the British against the
Ottoman Empire during World War One. Her efforts,
along with many others, contributed to the British
victory over the Ottomans and their subsequent
occupation of Palestine. I was able to go inside her
home and see how she lived day to day and see
some of her personal belongings.
I have come to understand that without such
heroes
we would be left without a country of our own. I
realized in the museum that without Sarah Aaronson
and the efforts of so many others, I would not be
able to enjoy a chag in the Jewish
homeland, that her sacrifice helped Bnei
Yisrael, and me, directly.
All in all, my trip to Israel was an incredible
experience. Every time I go, I find it amazing how
much more there is to learn-- because of this
unparalleled opportunity, I am inspired to go back
again, and again, and again.
