    A Special
    Chanukah Week
    to Remember!

    by Avi Dennis (’07)

One of the many innovative programs sponsored by the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County is the Jewish Roots project, part of the Partnership 2000 initiative. The purpose of the Jewish Roots program is to unite Jewish teenagers from Boca Raton and Kiryat Bialik, our sister city in Israel. The goal is to show these high school students what life is like for a Jewish teenager in Israel and America today, as well as to discuss issues of religious and cultural identity from a variety of perspectives.

As part of Jewish Roots 5766, seven WYHS students along with students from Donna Klein Jewish Academy and local public schools spent the week of Chanukah in Israel with students from Kiryat Bialik.

After enjoying a layover in New York City, Devorah Greer (’06), Shalom Weberman (’06), Avi Dennis (’07), Amanda Krasna (’07), Alyssa Muckley (’07), Chava Rubin (’07), and Meira Tirschwell (‘07), accompanied by faculty advisor Rabbi Benjy Horowitz, arrived at Ben Gurion airport last Tuesday. There, we were greeted by students from the ORT High School in Kiryat Bialik.

Over the past two years, Jewish Roots participants in Florida have been meeting to discuss Jewish perspectives and ideas. In addition, we have been speaking with our Israeli counterparts via video-conference on a regular basis. This trip allowed us to meet face to face for the very first time the students we had already come to know so well.

During the week in Israel, we spent time together touring significant historical sites like Givat HaTachmoshet, where we learned how our soldiers fought and gave their lives during the Six Day War in order to reclaim Yerushalayim for the Jews. We also visited Har Hertzel, where many important prime ministers and Israeli soldiers who died defending our country are buried.

Finally, we had the opportunity to daven at the Kotel and to embark on the famous Tunnel Tour, going underground around the Kotel. Rappelling in Adamit Park, shopping at the Kiryon and Kanyon Malcha, having a scavenger hunt in “Mini Israel” and making a cookout in Goren Park all proved to be diverse and fun ways to get know our Israeli counterparts better.

We also had the opportunity to do chesed by delivering meals to needy families in Acco. We visited Yad VaShem together and were moved by its meaning and significance. We stood arm and arm singing Hatikva and recognizing the crucial role Israel plays as the defender of world Jewry.

This trip was truly inspiring, one where Jews from many different religious backgrounds were able to come together and focus on what they share in common, rather than on what sets them apart.

    Seniors Collecting Yearbook Ads
    and Fundraising
    To Help Subsidize Graduation Trip

    by Sarah Dray (’09)

Senior fundraising is fully underway! In order to subsidize the cost of the graduation class trip to Canada in May, the seniors have begun their weekly fundraising sales and are actively soliciting ads for their yearbook.

An array of Shabbat treats is available on Fridays, including delicious challahs, babkas and cookies. Additionally, beautiful roses in an assortment of colors are being sold by the dozen, half dozen or as single roses for excellent prices.

Led by Ziyona Rantz (’06), Nicole Tryfus (’06) and Yael Hirth (’06) the sales have been incredibly successful, with everybody thoroughly enjoying the deserts and roses on their Shabbat tables.

The seniors, along with the dedicated help of Mrs. Marcelle Bouganim are working very hard every Friday after school; however, we cannot do it without your help! Please support the senior class and fill out the order forms for food and roses each week by Wednesday to brighten up your Shabbat table!

In addition, the yearbook committee has been working countless hours to ensure this yearbook is the best it's ever been! One huge accomplishment this year is that the entire yearbook is in color. This special feature can only be accomplished if ads are collected to cover this extra cost.

The ad deadline is January 10th. Please submit all ads to Yocheved Popiol (’06), or send them in to the office. Please help make this yearbook the best yet and help subsidize the cost of the yearbook and our graduation trip.

Please call the school office at 561-417- 7422 to order any of the Shabbat treats or roses and to place an ad in the yearbook.

    Thank you for your support!!

    WYHS Students at Regents Park

Chanukah was a packed week at WYHS but that did not stop some of our students from taking time out of their busy schedules to bring some Chanukah joy to others. On the fourth day of Chanukah, December 29th, WYHS students visited Regents Park, a retirement home, in Boca Raton and celebrated Chanukah with the residents.

Our program began wonderfully, with students and residents getting to know one another. Aleeza Rubin (’09) assisted one resident in lighting the menorah and helped her recite the brachot. Following the lighting of the menorah, our students and the residents sang Chanukah songs together.

The students dispersed throughout the activities room and paired up with the residents. With the matches made, we played Chanukah Bingo, a new version of the timeless tradition. The residents had smiles on their faces and we knew that we had made their Chanukah a whole lot brighter!

Kol Hakavod to the following students who made a difference at Regents Park: Brett Aiken (’09), Daniel Aiken (’09), Elan Aiken (’09), Eli Albert (’09), Daniella Greer (’09), Elana Linker (’09), Aleeza Rubin (’09), Andy Surasky (’09) and Yocheved Tirschwell (’08).

Great Study Tips for Upcoming Midterm Exams

    by Ms. Dana Sardano
    Learning Specialist

    Dear Students,

As you are all well aware, midterms are right around the corner. Here are a few tips to get organized, prepared, and to avoid the stresses of midterm season.

  • Begin organizing materials NOW! Collect and correct any old tests and quizzes, even the ones crumpled in the bottom of your locker. Organize your notebooks, filling in areas of notes that you might have missed along the way.

  • Review your materials TODAY! Prepare a list of questions to ask your teacher during review week, such as format, unclear topics, etc.

  • Prioritize your study schedule. Make a list of your exams and prioritize your study time by the hours you must invest in each exam and when they will be taken.

  • Make a reasonable study schedule. Make a schedule that includes all of your available study time and fill it in with your priority list, beginning with your most crucial exam.

  • Study in increments. It is not wise to study for three hours in one night for a test when you can split it up into three one hour nights. You have a better chance of retaining the information when you learn it in smaller pieces.

  • Get plenty of sleep. If you begin your preparation now, there will be NO NEED for an “all- nighter.”

  • Do not panic! When the brain is in distress it shuts off. Take your time, pace yourself, and it will all pay off.

    Good luck!!

  • Girls Soccer Season is a Picture of Teamwork

    by Emily Waxman (’09)

This past Tuesday, the girls varsity soccer team played yet another tough exciting game. Although our team was missing a few of our key players, we still played an amazing game and scored a spectacular goal against Sagemont. The goal was scored by Kayla Kowal (’06) and was assisted by Rebecca Isaacs (’07) in a great display of skill and teamwork. Our goalie Raquel Amram (‘07) made some great saves, with the help of Jessie Busch (‘09) and Malka Hizkiya (‘07) who showed off their defensive skills by blocking every ball that came their way. After the Storm’s hard work and determination, the final score was tied at 1-1.

Thursday’s game against South Florida Heat High School was a close game, with the Storm losing by just one goal. The entire team played with energy and passion, including Eliana Goodman (‘07), Kayla Kowal (‘06) and Ali Cristina (‘07) who kept the ball moving with their crisp passes. The most rewarding part of this season was seeing how each member of the team improved their skills and came together as a cohesive group.

The soccer team has only one game remaining this season, and we hope that everyone will come support us. This has been the single most successful season in WYHS girls soccer history, and we couldn’t have done it without every single one of our players and fans and the dedication and leadership of head coach Ozzy and assistant coach Melissa. Thanks for a great season!
