A Majestic Evening-
Graduation
of the Class of 2005by Chava
Rubin ('07)
The sanctuary was packed Tuesday evening as we
said goodbye to the 2005 graduating class in unique
WYHS style. Graduation began with mincha.
Seeing all the graduates in their caps and gowns
praying intently moments before the processional
was inspiring. As the students walked down the
center isle, followed by their Rabbis and teachers,
one could see the pride, happiness and sense of
accomplishment that illuminated each person's
face.
Following the Star Spangled Banner and
Hatikvah by Executive Director Shimmie
Kaminetsky and words of introduction by President
Dr. Sam Lasko, Principal Rabbi Perry Tirschwell spoke
about the "Purpose of A Yeshiva High School
Education." Assistant Principal Mrs. Ora Lee Kanner
spoke powerfully about the world after high school.
Each speech was very moving as it reflected the
graduates past four years of high school and
illustrated the coming endeavors of their lives.
The most comical part of the graduation came with
the screening of the graduation video, which
featured TV shows Friends and Twenty-Four and a
testimonial by each graduate. The students imparted
their favorite memories, feelings for the school and
teachers, and ways in which they've grown
religiously, academically and socially in Weinbaum
Yeshiva High School. This masterpiece was the fruit
of the hard work of Humanities Department Chair,
Mrs. Carla Greer. Each graduate will receive a copy
on DVD.
The last speaker of the night, founder of school,
Rabbi Kenneth Brander, spoke of the upcoming
holiday of Shavuot and how it related to the
graduates. After this Torah enlightened speech, each
senior came up to the bimah to accept his or
her diploma. Before receiving the actual document
and a leather bound siddur with each
student's name engraved on it, Mrs. Greer and Mrs.
Kanner spoke about each student with words of
praise as well as a quote from Pirkei Avot
(The Ethics of Our Fathers) that was fitting for his or
her individual personality.
After accepting the diplomas and the traditional
throwing of the caps, friends and family gathered in
the ballroom for pictures, congratulations and a
dessert reception.
Mazel Tov to all the graduates of 2005. We'll miss
you. Good luck next year!
