From the desk of
Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

This was a big sports week at WYHS as both the boys and girls competed in inter Yeshiva sports tournaments and both tennis and baseball teams played. Our goal is to communicate to the students on the field the same messages that we teach in the classroom- always try your absolute best, be respectful of all human beings and be cognizant that you represent more than just yourself.

Don't miss Mrs. Greer's article on our four year curriculum which prepares our students to write excellent college papers.

As the sophomores leave early Sunday morning for the Keys, they shouldn't forget siddurim and tefillin in addition to sun tan lotion and cameras.

Mazel tov to Warren and Gail Kasztl on the engagement of their son and to younger sisters Elana ('04) and Naomi ('08). Mazel tov to Danny and Linda Singer on the Bat Mitzvah of their daughter and to older sister Ilana ('06).

Shabbat Shalom

Storm Wins Tier II of Red Saracheck

by Joey Abady ('05)

The scene was surreal. The atmosphere in the gym was indescribable; as the air seemed to be full of aura and mystique. Glancing at center court one was struck by a sea of maroon and white. Players, coaches, and fans gathered together in celebration of this historic event. The expression on Assistant Coach David Kornbluth's face said it all; as tears of joy trickled from his eyes. It was almost as if you had to take a step back, pinch yourself, and make sure this wasn't all one big dream. It wasn't. It was a dream come true.

To cap off the best season in Yeshiva basketball history, the Storm were crowned as Tier II Champions of Yeshiva University's 14th Annual Red Saracheck Tournament. Twenty teams from Jewish high schools from all over North America competed for the trophies which only three teams, including WYHS, won.

The Storm entered the tournament with the hopes of bringing home some hardware. Although many doubted their chances, the team remained confident in their ability to perform. It was put best by Tier II M.V.P. Jon Struhl ('06) who said after his team's victory-"No one gave us a chance coming into this thing. Today we proved them all wrong". The Storm defeated the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy (Kansas City) and Yeshiva Ohr Chaim (Toronto) en route to winning Tier II.
During their magical run through Saracheck, the Storm became the first WYHS team to win a Y.U. Tournament Championship. Throughout the week, the Storm were led by the clutch play of Josh Goldberg ('06) who always seemed to deliver the big- play at "crunch-time". In addition, the offense benefited from the superb play of Jon Struhl ('06) and Daniel Poliak ('06) who provided a potent one- two scoring punch.

However, much of the credit is deserving of the coaching staff, which consists of Head Coach Jon Kaweblum and Assistant Coach David Kornbluth. Their hard work and dedication proved to be the key component that made this season so remarkable. Many say you can tell the difference between a good team and a great team based on their identity and the way they carry themselves. A team's identity usually reflects the personality of their head coach. The Storm's perseverance and "team-first" mentality truly defines the attitude of head coach Jon Kaweblum.

For seniors Yoni Schiff, Jake Singer and Dovi Lamet, winning the championship was a fitting way to end their high school careers. It was the culmination of a season filled with everlasting memories.

The 51-41 win over Ohr Chaim was especially meaningful for long-time assistant David "Coach K" Kornbluth. Coach K has served as the assistant coach since the team's inauguration. After enduring long painful seasons and constant struggles, this championship was all the more special.

The Tier II Championship was the perfect ending to the best season in school history. That Sunday afternoon victory provided us with a priceless moment frozen in time. Counting down the seconds till victory, sent chills through my spine, as fans prepared to storm the court. The image of players, coaches, and fans embracing one another is one that anyone involved with this team will never forget. Thank you for the memories.

Girls Basketball Tournament a Success

by Shira Borzak ('07)

This past weekend the Weinbaum Yeshiva High School hosted its 4th Annual Girls Varsity Invitational Basketball Tournament- possibly the very best ever. SKA/HALB from Long Island, Maayanot from New Jersey, YULA from Los Angeles and the RASG Hebrew Academy from Miami Beach participated. This tournament provided a fun, intimate atmosphere in which girls bonded over Kumsitzes and foul shots.

Every player got to know members of the other teams. On one hand it is strange to be competing with your new friends, but that makes for excellent sportsmanship and camaraderie on the court. Even though our own Storm failed to make as big of an impact on the courts as we would have hoped, we all played hard, especially Leah Bensimon ('07) and Alyssa Muckley ('07), our team MVP's. Congratulations to "new-kids-on-the-tournament." YULA on their amazing win as the p>

Thanks must go out to the incomparable WYHS Athletic Director Melissa Pereira, who, as only she can do, gave 75 girls the weekend of their lives. Mrs. Miriam Tirschwell, Mrs. Deena Borzak, and Executive Director Shimmie Kaminetsky were also instrumental in the formation of this tournament, and thank you to Mrs. Kanner and family for an incredible Shabbat.

Noted Therapist Presents
to Students and Teachers

On Tuesday, counselor, author and Jewish Press columnist Rabbi Simcha Feuerman met with both the younger and older boys, Judaic faculty, and guidance counselors about the Torah View on Sexuality and the clash between the values of our tradition and those of contemporary society.

Thank you to the anonymous sponsor of the day.

Developing Research Paper Skills

by Mrs. Carla Greer
Humanities Department Chair

Spring is the time when high school students throughout the country are busy at work searching their local libraries and online sites for source material to be used for their research papers. Here at WYHS, things are no different!

Because of the extremely important role research papers play in developing students' ability to think critically, create cogent thesis statements, utilize and correctly document primary and secondary sources according to the MLA style, develop ideas logically, and be prepared for the expectations of colleges (which traditionally demand that incoming freshmen demonstrate an expertise in term papers) - the humanities department has instituted specific research paper requirements for each grade.

The term paper requirements have been designed to incrementally and systematically develop our students' proficiencies over the course of the four years.

  • Our freshman and sophomore students are currently working on research papers in which they are analyzing literary works from a variety of social, political, and philosophical perspectives.
  • Our juniors have just completed (or are completing) their research papers, with topics ranging from biographical elements in Kafka's The Trial, to the use of narrative therapy in O'Brien's The Things They Carried, to Victorian attitudes towards children in Alice's Adventure's in Wonderland, to the current moral and social implications of stem-cell research.
  • Our seniors our working on select topics in Jewish history under the auspices of their Jewish history teachers.
  • In all grades, students are expected to demonstrate an in-depth level of understanding in the subject matter as well as grade-appropriate level of expertise in research paper protocols, syntax and grammar, and the appropriate inclusion of outside sources.

    Sophomore Garage Sale a Success
Pre Pesach Car Wash Next Sunday

    by Raquel Amram ('07)

On Sunday March 20th, the Sophomore Garage Sale took place. It was the biggest fundraiser by the class of 2007 yet. We raised over $1000- double the amount we had estimated!

Perhaps even more notable were the high level of enthusiasm and class involvment. The class came together and worked with one goal in mind and were therefore successful.

We would like to thank all those who were involved. Some set up or sold the day of the Garage Sale. Some donated or bought items. A big thank you to Boca Raton Synagogue Youth Director Rabbi Josh Brodie for allowing us to take part of the extremely well run and best yet Purim carnival.

The money raised will contribute to the financial aid that sophomores will receive for their upcoming class trip to the keys.

Please continue to support the sophomores and freshmen in their fundraising efforts by bringing your cars, vans and other vehicles out to the school next Sunday, April 17 to have them cleaned inside and out before Passover.
