From the desk of
Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

Regards from New York, where our Boys Varsity Basketball Team was seeded last night as the number one team in Tier Two in the 14th Annual Yeshiva University Red Saracheck Tournament. Things are no less exciting back at home, where we are hosting our fourth WYHS Girls Basketball Tournament, with teams from as far as Los Angeles. Next week's high-lites will cover these sports events extensively.

Don't miss the side splitting Purim spoof of the Chodesh Chidush, available below. If you need help with either the gemara skills or the inside jokes, it's worth doing so. Rabbi Chaim Lanner's mock Talmud on the last page is brilliant.

I look foward to seeing our parents at a Hollywood Town Meeting at the Hoffmans on this Tuesday night, April 5, at 8:00 p.m.

This a a HUGE edition of Yeshiva High-lites, with three slide shows and five additional links. Thanks as always to WYHS Technology Director Mrs. Claudia Cohen. Shabbat Shalom and may the best teams win,

Rabbi Perry Tirschwell
Principal

An "Over the Top" WYHS Purim

by Chava Rubin ('07)

This year's Purim Chagiga was the greatest, most spirited WYHS has ever seen! 450 people (the biggest turnout ever!) participated in this year's chagiga. Faculty, parents, students and their siblings came in stunning costumes. The very lively dancing went on for close to an hour straight.

The finale of the night was the showing of The Apprentice. The half hour episode was extremely well done and entertaining. It was very exciting to see the two teams competing to complete the different tasks they were given by Donald Trump, aka Shimmie Kaminetsky. Congratulations to winning team "The Mighty Ducks", and the Apprentice Meir Weiss ('07) on being "hired".

MaryL Catering prepared a filling, dairy break-fast meal that everyone enjoyed and DJ, Roni Raab, added immensely to the energetic atmosphere of the evening.

A big thanks to Rabbi Josh Spodek for working tirelessly in his coordination of the entire evening, Rabbi Chaim Lanner for his countless hours on creating The Apprentice, and Meira Tirschwell ('07), Ilana Singer ('06), Avi Lasko ('07), Brian Surasky ('06) and Jessica Hoffman ('05) for setting up and decorating the hotel during Taanit Esther. Yashar koach to Rabbi Ben Sugerman on a terrific Megilla reading and for coordinating the machatzit hashekel, maariv and the Megillat Esthers.

A Fitting Tribute to
The Branders

This past Tuesday evening, three hundred people (including the lay and professional leadership of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County) attended the inaugural reception of The Rabbi Kenneth Brander Center for Jewish Life & Learning. The evening paid tribute to Rabbi Kenneth and Ruchie Brander for their years of world-renown leadership of the Boca Raton community and their creation of The Weinbaum Yeshiva High School and Boca Raton Community Kollel.

The evening began with a sumptuous buffet dinner and was followed by a moving program. In addition to a beautiful video highlighting the Branders' accomplishments in Boca Raton, the speakers for the evening included master of ceremonies Stewart Harris (MC), Tuvia ('06) and Yoni ('06) Brander, Rabbanit Avigail Rock, Rabbi Perry Tirschwell and Mrs. Lori Wexler (wife of Congressman Robert Wexler).

President Richard Joel of Yeshiva University presented a stirring case for why he feels Rabbi and Mrs. Brander must join him at Yeshiva University. It was gratifying to the many community leaders present to see how Boca is viewed nationally as a model community.

Rabbi Kenneth Brander's humble response was truly moving. After the program, there was spirited dancing and a delicious dessert buffet.

Special thanks to Dr. Sam Lasko, President of WYHS and Mrs. Beth Mishkin, President of The Community Kollel for chairing the event; WYHS parents Nancy Markovitch and Judi Krasna for chairing the dinner; and Carol Smokler and Jane Glaser for chairing the program.

Yeshiva Students Celebrate Purim Week in Chiloni Sister City

by Jenn Adler ('06)

Our excitement was remarkably apparent from the moment we stepped onto the plane at the Ft. Lauderdale airport. 5 WYHS and 4 Donna Klein students, who have been participating in the Jewish Roots Partnership 2000 Program with Boca Raton's sister city Kiryat Biyalik, could not wait to get to Israel and see what was in store for us during the upcoming week!

The first day we arrived in Israel we went straight from the airport to Jerusalem to visit the Western Wall and the Jewish Quarter of the Old City. Shortly after, we traveled north to Kiryat Biyalik and settled in. We were hosted by our Israeli counterparts in the Jewish Roots program. Over the next few days we were exposed to life in Kiryat Biyalik as we went with our hosts to the malls, supermarkets, parks, etc. in their neighborhood.

The highlight of our stay in Kiryat Biyalik was attending school on Purim day. This celebration was truly unique as every student came in his or her creative costumes. Each student, regardless of their age, put in a tremendous effort to dress up and create incredible outfits. It was amazing to see how serious kids took choosing their costumes and how contrastingly in America most teens don't even take the time to wear a costume.

Over the course of the week we toured and traveled to places such as Rosh Hanikra, Tzipori, and an Air Force base. Arguably, the highlight of our trip was Shabbat in Safed (Tzfat). These last 24 hours spent with our Israeli counterparts in this mystical, magical city solidified the great friendships we had made over the course of the week. We bonded in the hotel over Shabbat meals, as we toured the beautiful city, and as we davened at some of the most beautiful synagogues in Israel.

The pinnacle was definitely havdalah. For the most amazing couple of minutes every single one of us in the room was dancing, clapping, and singing at the top of our lungs. Whether you were Israeli or American, we all joined together in a circle to rejoice and danced as we bid Shabbat farewell.

Shortly after havdalah, we said our goodbyes to our Israeli friends and traveled back to Jerusalem. On Sunday, which was the third day of Purim in Jerusalem, we toured around the city and went to Hekiyahu's tunnels and Beit Guvrin, and then back home to the airport for our return flight.

This trip was an amazing opportunity where we were able to go to Israel, experience suburban life there, see the world through the eyes of secular Israelis, and deepen friendships we have made with the Israelis through our videoconferences and their visit to Boca this past Chanuka. Despite our cultural differences, we shared many similarities with the Israelis and were able to gain a great deal during our visit.

Thank you to Jewish Education Commssion Executive Director Dr. Leon Weissberg, who coordinated both the trip and this entire program from its inception. Thanks to Rabbi Benjy Horowitz who made trhe sacrifice of leaving his wife and young baby to accompany us, and who has helped us negotiate the challanges inherent in such a program.

Students and Faculty Celebrate Dobrick Bris

Seven years ago, the first program that our one month-old school ran was a sheva brachot for a young teacher who had just graduated college and joined our inaugural college preparatory staff.

This past Monday, a new generation of WYHS students had the privilege and pleasure of lending their unique energy and excitement to make a bris in honor of the birth of this now seasoned history instructor's first child.

Rabbi Kenneth Brander named the baby, Avraham Yisrael (Ethan Isaac) and Dr. Aaron Kawelblum, father of Boys Varsity Coach Jon Kawelblum, performed the bris. Rabbi Tirschwell spoke about the three traits that we can all learn from our history teacher par excellence- Integrity, Humility, and a Commitment to Excellence. Mr. Dobrick spoke movingly about his and his wife's feelings for the school, and about their deep thanks to G-d for making this high risk pregnancy turn out positively.

The students, faculty and the Dobrick's family dined on a special breakfast of bagels, omelettes, pancakes and orange juice.

Thanks to Rabbi Josh Spodek, Shimmie Kaminetsky, and Mrs. Ora Lee Kanner for their roles in making this occasion so memorable.

Sophomore Trip One Week Away!

Hilarious Comedy
Only 2 Weeks Away

by Avi Dennis ('07)

The WYHS Drama Department is putting the finishing touches on our upcoming production of Arsenic and Old Lace. The students (and Mrs. Schultz) have been working at a feverish pace in rehearsals. Although producing a professional production requires a tremendous amount of commitment and a lot of hard work, the results are very rewarding. The comradery of the cast has grown over the past few months and we have learned the importance of teamwork, patience, and perfectionism. All the while, we have been having fun with late night practices, pizza breaks, and trying to keep up with Mrs. Saddler's thousands of inexplicable stage directions (CHEAT OUT! CHEAT OUT!)

It's a really entertaining show. Tickets are now on sale. Buy them for all your family and friends. You don't want to miss this!

The cast includes Avi Dennis ('07), Batyah Weiss ('06), Ziyona Rantz ('06), Shira Borzak ('07), Michael Hande ('05), Mordechai Siev ('06), Moshe Wahba ('08), David Belolo ('07), Sarah Dray ('06), Meir Weiss ('07), Sarah Magid ('05), Yoni Brander ('07), Raquel Amram ('07), and Assistant Principal Mrs. Jessica Schultz.
