From the desk of Rabbi Perry
Tirschwell
Purim is in the air as we celebrate Rosh
Chodesh Adar Bet in true WYHS spirit today.
Don't knock barbeque for breakfast until you've tried
it! Also, don't forget to make reservations for the
Purim Chagigah (see below), to which all
faculty, alumni, and present students
and their families are invited.
I want to thank the parents for the suggestions they
offered at Town Meetings in Boca and Miami
Beach this past week. We'll be in North Miami Beach
on this coming Tuesday night, and please note that
the Hollywood date is Tuesday (not
Wednesday) April 5.
Don't forget to send in $20 to the school for the
DVD of "Once Upon a Mattress" (or $25 if
you
also want the "Into the Woods" DVD)
Thank G-d, it was week of special simchas.
Mazel

Juniors Bond as Floridians Enjoy Winter Sports
|
|
by Sahar Zaghi ('06)
Our long awaited Junior Trip started out bright and
early this past Sunday morning with a 12 hour
bus
ride to North Carolina which was totally worth
it!! The trip was exciting and fun, but at the same
time very chilled out and relaxing.
Sunday night, after arriving in Blowing Rock Ski
Mountain, unpacking and settling in, we all
gathered in one of the cabins to eat a
barbeque, watch "Rocky" and groove to music!
On our first morning, after davening and
breakfast, the intrepid Floridians headed out to the
slopes all bundled up and ready to ski. Every
person
had an amazing time- whether they were intensely
skiing, snow boarding or just rolling down the
mountain. Mid afternoon we gathered for a late lunch
and mincha. The line up of evening activities
included night skiing, ice skating or movie-watching.
We then met again to eat a second barbeque and
watch yet some more "Rocky" and listen to yet some
more music.
The second morning we awoke to a
SNOWSTORM outside our cabins. Although we
were told to wait out the storm, most of us could not
help it, and ventured just outside our cabins for an
intense snow fight. We stayed in most of the morning
in our respective cabins- watching movies, sipping
hot cocoa, and basically pigging out.
When the blizzard cleared, we went out to ski and
then to night ski or ice skate. It was truly an
experience to ski or skate with the falling snow.
That night we once again gathered to have a
barbeque and watch the third night of the "Rocky"
marathon and jam some more music- it never got old!!
On our final morning in winter wonderland
we sadly packed up and left early, with our 12 hour
bus ride to look forward to. All in all- we had an
amazing and unique experience where we really
bonded as a class, enjoying each other's
company. Thanks so much to Rabbi Spodek,
Claudia
Cohen, and Rabbi Broide for making this an
unforgettable trip!!

Farewell to the Branders Approaches
|
|
On Tuesday evening, March 29, the
Weinbaum Yeshiva High School will be
paying tribute to Rabbi Kenneth and Ruchie Brander
at the inaugural reception of The Rabbi Kenneth
Brander Center for Jewish Life and Learning. WYHS is
partnering with the Boca Raton Community Kollel to
create this umbrella
organization which will work to raise funds to
support the needs and programs of
both WYHS and the Kollel.
This event is the school's major fundraiser this year.
There will not be a
separate WYHS Dinner. Please participate in this
special farewell tribute to Rabbi Kenneth and Ruchie
Brander by placing a journal ad and/or attending the
dinner on the 29th.
We are all beneficiaries of the Branders'
founding of our school and helping it grow and
constantly strive to reach new heights.
Please note that, due to the tremendous response,
we have changed the location of the
event. The dinner will take place at Bnai Torah
Congregation, not at Boca Raton Synagogue.
For additional information, please click here
to e-mail Executive Director Shimmie
Kaminetsky or call
the school office

Accreditation Visit Nears
|
|
by Ms. Dana Sardano, Accreditation
Coordinator
The excitement is building as the date for our
accreditation visit rapidly approaches! Our SACS
committees are putting the final touches on the
School Improvement Plan as we prepare for our Peer
Review Visit in April. Invitations to the welcome
dinner to students, parents, and teachers who were
involved in the development of the School
Improvement Plan were sent out this past
week.
The team's agenda for April 18th and 19th has been
carefully planned to include meetings with parents,
teachers, and students. The committee, made up of
experienced educators from other schools, is as
eager to gain insight from all segments of
the WYHS
community as we are to share our school's unique
character with
them.
I have spent the last several months visiting
each standard that we must meet in order to be
accredited. We have filed the proof of compliance to
make the job of the peer review team as easy as
possible. As a part of our preparation for the visit,
we had to review every staff member's job
description and credentials. This task was a
delightful reminder of what a spectacularly well
trained, well educated, talented staff we have at
WYHS.
All of the committees' hard work is coming together
as we tie up the last few loose ends before the April
visit. We trust that the peer review team will
experience all that WYHS has to offer. We
anticipate a productive and successful visit!

My Year In Israel A Report from Jerusalem
|
|
by Shira Pritzker ('04)
A yeshiva high school graduate's
year of post secondary study in Israel is the defining
point in their personal commitment to Judaism. Not
living under their parents' roof for the first time, it's
essential for a student to prepare for the
challenges
of the college campus, workplace, and raising of
a
family. We understand that we will never have this
opportunity to concentrate on our growth as people
and bnei Torah as we do this year.
Being in Israel helps us connect to our roots by going
on tiyulim (tours) throughout the country and having
the Bible stories that we have learned in elementary,
middle and high school come alive. Inspiration is
around every corner in the Land of Our People.
Having our beloved former WYHS teachers Rabbi
Avi
and Mrs. Leba Schneider here in Israel serving
as our
school's liaisons has provided a home away from our
homes 5,000 miles away. We have thoroughly
enjoyed shabbatot and special occasions at their
home and are always welcome there to ask for
advice or anything we need.
I thank G-d, my parents and my teachers
for enabling me to have this singular
experience. It is
an opportunity that every student should take
advantage
of.
Enjoy your senior year, class
of '05. L'shana Haba B'Yerushalayim
(next year in
Jerusalem)!

Tennis Team WINS First Two Matches
|
|
by Moshe Genet ('06)
After weeks of practice and learning new
strategies
under the tutelage of WYHS' new coach Michael
Baldwin, the team felt confident with their
skills.
In Yeshiva's Tennis Team's first match of the year,
they faced arch rival David Posnack Hebrew
Day
School. The Genet Brothers won their singles
matches. Aryeh Genet ('08) surprised his opponent
with his cool demeanor but scorching slams.
Down 3-2 in the meet after the singles games, it
all
came down to the doubles matches, and boy,
did we
clean up! Congratulations to Brian Surasky ('06) and
superior David Belolo ('07) on their doubles win and
to classmen Daniel Shimansky ('08) and Brandon
Gelbart ('08) on theirs.
Congratulations as well to Shiras Borzak ('07) and
Poliak ('08) on their doubles win (8-0) and to Ilana
Borzak ('07) and Amanda Schiff ('05) on their doubles
win (8-2). On Thursday night, the girls
tennis team thrashed their opponents
Wellington
Christian.
Singles wins included Shira Borzak, Amanda Schiff,
Ashley Musoff. Doubles wins included Amanda Schiff
and Shira Borzak (8-4) and Shira Poliak and Ashley
Musoff (8-5).
"We're having a lot of fun and it's amazing how
far we've come in a such a short time",
commented Shira Borzak.
The team looks forward to many more challenges and
G-d willing more victories.
