From the desk of
Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

There is no doubt that prayer will be the primary vehicle for our graduates' relationship with G-d as adults. Just like as our faculty decided to dedicate all the Judaic studies courses for a week to understanding our prayers, I'd like to suggest that we as parents have an even larger role to play in our children's davening.

Focus, consistency and meaning are the answers;
  • When you're praying in synagogue or at home, don't also try to do something else (eg. conduct a conversation)
  • Your children will think prayer is important if they see you making time for it on a daily basis.
  • Daven like your health and wealth depend on it, because they do.
  • Mazel tov to the San Solo family on the Bat Mitzvah of their daughter, and condolences to Jon Surasky on the loss of his mother.

    Shabbat Shalom,

    Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

    It Was All About Prayer

    by Chava Rubin ('07)

Our Tefillah Week started with a big bang last Friday morning when guest speaker Rabbi Paysach Krohn inspired the student body about the importance of Tefillah (prayer) and shared many suggestions on how to enhance our prayers and relationship with G-d. The school instituted Tefillah Week to teach students about Tefillah's meaning and value in order to enhance each student's level of davening.

Rabbi Krohn is a talented, world renown lecturer and author. His "Maggid" series books can be found in Jewish homes everywhere. Through his interactive speech (he gave out autographed books to people who answered questions) and eye-opening stories, Rabbi Krohn successfully related his ideas to the students. It was an enormous privilege to have the opportunity to listen and learn from such an honorable and scholarly rabbi.

Tefillah week gave students the chance to learn the halachot (laws) and to discuss the deeper meaning and purpose to prayer. Each class discussed an aspect of prayer throughout the week learning either by chavruta, lectures, or discussions. The Navi (prophets) classes learned about Birchat Hashachar (morning blessings). Gemarah/ Tushba (Talmud) classes learned about Shemonah Esrei, and Chumash (Bible) classes discussed the philosophical aspects to davening and building a relationship with G-d.

These classes hopefully have not only inspired students during their high school years, but will have a positive effect that remains with them for the rest of their lives. Thank you to the Zaghi Family for making Rabbi Krohn's address possible.

    Saluting the Branders

The Weinbaum Yeshiva High School is proud to announce that, in conjunction with The Community Kollel, we are establishing The Rabbi Kenneth Brander Center for Jewish Life and Learning at an inaugural reception on Tuesday night, March 29, 2005 at the Boca Raton Synagogue. This inaugural dinner will be a farewell tribute to Rabbi Kenneth and Ruchie Brander. We are privileged to have Mr. Richard Joel, president of Yeshiva University as the keynote speaker at this special event.

The Rabbi Kenneth Brander Center for Jewish Life and Learning is not a new institution, but rather an umbrella to enhance the fundraising effectiveness, pool administrative resources, and guarantee that the philosophy of openness and tolerance on which The Weinbaum Yeshiva High School and The Community Kollel were predicated will be maintained.

As part of this farewell tribute, we will be printing a testimonial journal. Ad blanks for the journal are available as a link to the High-lites and will be coming in the mail this coming week. A formal invitation will follow shortly thereafter.

We strongly encourage everyone to support this effort and to pay tribute to the Founder of our school. For further information, please contact Executive Director, Shimmie Kaminetsky at the school office or via email ( msk@wyhs.net).

Yeshiva Doesn't End on Friday Afternoon

    by Yoni Brander ('07)

This past Shabbat, Boca was the place to be for WYHS students from all grades. Freshman girls enjoyed the hospitality of the Broides and the Grossmans and senior girls had a great time at the Sugermans.

The sophomore class had a classwide Shabbaton, which was the brainchild of sophomore class presidents Raquel Amram and Jason Mann. Friday night, after dinner at the homes of the Branders, Lanners and Tirschwells, the students participated in song and choulent-filled tisches at the homes of the Schochets and Spodeks.

The entire class had a delicious Mary L-catered Shabbat lunch on the newly dedicated second floor in the large double classroom with the Horowitzes and Spodeks. A Motzei Shabbat program capped off the weekend of bonding.

But this past week was not an isolated incident. Week in and week out students frequent the circle in a class or shiur get together of some sort. I know that in my own home my mother has had her class on numerous occasions.

Being invited to their teachers' homes allows students to witness how their teachers interact in their own four walls. We see how they treat their spouses and children with respect and how they can be down to earth people. When we witness how our teachers behave in their own homes, they graduate from information givers to role models.

Boys Varsity Wins Its First Playoff Game

    by Joey Abady ('05)

The Yeshiva Storm began the quest for its first district championship on Tuesday with a first round playoff match-up against the Boca Prep Lions. Yeshiva entered the game as the #3 seed in their district, which is the highest ranking to date in school history.

The Storm dominated from start to finish en route to a 64-13 victory over the Lions. Josh Goldberg ('06) made his first start of the season, replacing the injured Yoni Schiff ('05). Goldberg filled the void beautifully by scoring 12 points and playing stellar defense. Yeshiva was also led by tremendous offensive performances from Jake Singer ('05) and Jon Struhl ('06) who scored 14 and 10 points respectively. The win improved Yeshiva's record to (11-7).

Yeshiva will now face-off against Lake Worth Christian in today's 2:00 p.m. 2nd round playoff match-up. The Storm is looking to avenge an early season loss to Lake Worth and have emerged as the "dark horse" to win the tournament.
