From the desk of Rabbi Perry
Tirschwell
What a whirlwind and exciting week
it was at WYHS! Parents were given a
sneak
preview of the second floor at Parent Teacher
Conferences on Monday evening. On Tuesday, the
congestion that has plagued our first floor
hallway for
a few years was finally relieved as the girls'
lockers
were moved upstairs. On Wednesday, the confluence
of the beginning of the Hebrew month of
Adar and the Consecration of Our Second
Floor was overwhelming. After setting up the
classrooms and library for everyday use, the
students truly enjoyed their first day of classes on
Thursday in the spacious new facility.
We all owe a debt of gratitude to Boca Raton
Synagogue Administrator Mr. Hommy
Tannenbaum and WYHS Executive Director Mr.
Shimmie Kaminetsky for their full year of
hard work on this project. They created a beautiful
space which meets the needs of both BRS and
WYHS.
Shabbat Shalom and enjoy the new format,
Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

The Historic Second Floor Chanukat Habayit
|
|
by Chava Rubin ('07)
This week, the long awaited dream
of doubling our school's physical plant materialized. It
began Tuesday with the emptying, taking apart on
the first floor, reconstruction on the second floor,
and refilling of the lockers. After school on Tuesday,
two dozen students spent hours decorating the new
8,671 square foot facility. Wednesday's creative
Rosh Chodesh Adar Aleph celebration
was the Chanukat Habayit of our school's
greatly expanded facility. On Thursday, the first
regular classes and minyanim took place on
the second floor.
Wednesday morning began with the entire school
davening together in a double classroom
upstairs, followed by a d'var Torah by the
school's Founder, Rabbi Kenneth Brander. Afterwards,
the
students were divided into groups by grade. Each
group visited four classrooms. Each classroom had
been assigned to a particular grade. The grade
created artwork (see explanation below) and
decorated the room. In each
room, the students enjoyed one dish of the
morning's four-course progressive breakfast,
listened
to a presentation about the theme of that
room's
artwork, and participated in a ten minute mini-
shiur about an aspect of the laws of
mezuzah. Each grade in its own room then
hung the mezuzah on the door frame. It was
a memorable and exciting inauguration.
Over a month ago, each grade met with the very
talented artist Loren Stein to create works
of art
which represent each grade. Students chose
themes such as the State of Israel, news events
that occurred during their class' formative years, and
kibbutz galuyot- the ingathering of students
from many middle schools to create one WYHS grade.
Under the guidance of Mrs. Stein (pictured in the
collage above), a member of the Boca Raton
Synagogue community, the students were able to
develop their creativity and produce incredible works
of art through mediums such as wood, marbles and
tile. These incredible pieces of art, now hanging on
our second floor, truly represent the spirit and ideals
of our school.
Since May, each day we have heard drilling,
hammering, and every construction sound imaginable.
After having classes Thursday on the spacious and
sunny second floor, the unanimous student reaction
was that the six new classrooms, seven
additional
offices, and an greatly enlarged
library were well
worth the wait.

The Girls Bring Down the House
|
|
WYHS' thespians and their drama
director outdid themselves once again this past week
in an amazing performance of the musical comedy
Once Upon a Mattress.
This year's script was upbeat, and required
exact comedic
timing, perfect pitch and high energy from each
of the actors
throughout. It was a true team effort with each cast
and crew member giving "110%". The months of
rehersals moulded the cast and crew into a cohesive
and caring group. Girls from all
grades put their heart and soul into the play, and it
was worth it. "Practice makes perfect" was the
motto of this dedicated cast, which has been
rehearsing three times a week since Succot.
A key to the play's success was Drama Director Mrs.
Liz Saddler's excellent casting, which
matched each performer to a role which they could
truly develop. Viewers remarked that each actress
seemed to have a part that was tailored just for her.
Each actress grew as an individual through the
discipline required to make this show a hit.
In their last performances in a WYHS musical, the
seniors, many of whom had participated in four years
of WYHS dramatic productions, went out "with a
bang".

Model UN Team Excells
|
|
by Jeremy Gelbart ('05)
This past Sunday morning, 10
students from our school traveled to Parsippany, NJ
to participate in the 15th annual Yeshiva University
National Model United Nations, in which students
throughout the US and Canada representing
more than 25 schools, gather to attend this
impressive program. This has been my third year
attending Model UN, and it was by far the best yet.
Over the two packed days, each student from our
school, either representing the delegation from
Singapore or Pakistan, spent nearly 15 hours
in his or her committee standing firm in his or her
country's beliefs and policies. Despite the serious
nature of this event, there was still plenty of time for
fun. With over 500 high school students in
attendance, playing Jewish geography and meeting
new friends was an interesting part of this
experience.
I know you are thinking that this past Sunday night
was the Super Bowl, but YU would never let us miss
that! After our first committee meeting, all 500
students watched the final quarter of the
Super Bowl together in the lobby of the hotel.
In
addition to having a great time, our students
distinguished themselves both as bnei Torah
and as well prepared delegates. One WYHS student
in particular, Tuvia Brander ('06), shone above the
rest, winning an honorable mention award for
representing his country skillfully and
acurately.
We would like to thank Assistant Principal Mrs.
Jessica Schultz and Uri Turk ('03) for
chaperoning us in this wonderful event. We truly
missed and appreciated all our coach Mr. Adam
Dobrick has done for us this year.

Amazing Basketball Season

Great JV
7-5 Season Ends
by
Daniel Shimansky ('08)
In Tuesday night's JV
Basketball game, the
Storm prevailed 55-15 over the
Florida Bible warriors. Though we had a height
advantage, they put out a solid
performance and gave us some trouble on defense.
Jason Mann ('07) led the team with
a game-high 14 points.
Thursday night's game against Broward
Christian was much more exciting, as
the Storm put together an thrilling comeback late in
the game. As Jason Mann ('07),
who is a big rebounder for the team, could not play,
we were out-rebounded as
the other team towered over us. The final score was
46-38 in favor of Broward
Christian. Jordan Lieber ('06), in his best game of the
season, contributed 8
points off the bench which was a big help. Daniel
Shimansky ('08) and Aryeh Genet ('08) led
the team as we concluded the season with a
winning record of 7-5.
Girls Play
Hard in District Playoff
by Sahar Zaghi ('06)
At their district game against Lake
Worth on
Tuesday, the Girls Varsity Basketball Team showed
how far they have truly come. We managed to
increase our amount of field goals by about 30%
since our last game against Lake Worth Christian.
Although we did not win Tuesday night's game, the
team never let down their spirit at any point during
the game. Our team exemplified great
improvements in teamwork and defense.
It has been such a fun season. We've learned a lot
about how to play as well as how to cooperate with
each other. The team never once forgot to have fun
out on the court, or to support each other when
sitting out- we definitely had the loudest bench!!
We are really looking to our upcoming Hillel and WYHS
tournaments!!

Varsity
Ends Season 10-7
by
Joey Abady ('05)
The Storm's regular season was capped off by
one of the most intense games of the year.
In a hard fought match up, Broward Christian
defeated Yeshiva 63-54. The Storm overcame a 16
point deficit and actually held a 2 point advantage
mid-way through the 4th quarter. The Storm were
led by Yoni Schiff ('05) who recorded a team-high 15
points, which included a brilliant 7-9 performance
from
the foul line. Jake Singer ('05) posted 12 points,
despite getting into early foul trouble.
The Storm finished the regular season with a
record of 10-7, which will now be
remembered as the most successful regular season in
school history. Yeshiva's remarkable performance is in
large part due to the countless hours and dedication
that the coaching staff (Head Coach-Jon Kaweblum,
Assistant Coach- David Kornbluth) has spent in
making adjustments to enable each player to play up
to their potential. The season is not over
yet as the Storm will shift their attention to this
coming Tuesday night's 1st round playoff match-up
with Boca Prep at Lake Worth Christian at 5:00 p.m.
The Storm enters the playoffs as the
#3 seed in the district and has high hopes of
turning this once non-contender into a champion. If
you haven't already, it's time to get "caught up in
the Storm".
