From the desk of Rabbi Perry
Tirschwell
I'd like to share with you a great new way
for teenagers to stay informed about Israel- the
weekly email newsletter called the Israel
HighWay.
The Israel HighWay includes in-depth examinations of
a specific "issue of
the week" that provides context to the headlines
about Israel, articles by
and about high school students, and
descriptions of Israel-related school projects. It also
includes sections
relating to Israeli and Jewish music, arts, sports and
technology.
It is published by the Conference of
Presidents of Major
American Jewish Organizations.
this week's edition. I highly recommend
every teenager subscribing.
Creating articulate
spokespersons for Israel
is a high priority at WYHS. Focusing on
Zionist history in the 12th grade Jewish
History course, the David Project for Israel Advocacy
which is returning this upcoming week,
the student run Committee for Israel Advocacy's
daily updates, guest speakers like the seniors are
hearing from today and weekly Israel Updates
presented by a student are just some of the ways
we tackle this issue. Shabbat
Shalom,

Laser Wars, NMB, and Parent Q&A |

On the Wednesday afternoon before Thanksgiving,
the eleventh grade got together as a class for the
Junior Night Out. The event started with
two games
of Laser Tag, followed by an incredible barbecue at
the home of Daniel Poliak in Hollywood.
Everyone had a wonderful time, especially when all
the boys -- and Rabbis -- spontaneously jumped
into
the swimming pool fully clothed! A huge thank
you
to Drs. Jose and Fay Poliak for hosting an amazing
barbecue that proved to be the highlight of the day!
This week's Town Hall Meeting in North Miami
Beach
was a great beginning to the town meeting season at
WYHS. Among the issues raised were the Mandatory
Parenting Program, The School Shabbaton, This
Year's Chumash Curriculum and the Workload in AP
Bio. Thank you to Dr. and Mrs.
Daniel Wolf for hosting the meeting.
Town Hall Meetings will be held in Hollywood on
Monday, December 20, in Boca on Tuesday,
December 21, and in Miami Beach on Tuesday,
December 28. Please stay tuned for more
information on times and locations.
Another important meeting took place on Thursday
night in Boca, the Informative Meeting for
Prospective Parents, which gave prospective
parents an open forum to ask any questions they
might have about what the school can offer their
children.

Big Sports Wins |
|
The Yeshiva Storm basketball season started
with a bang as both the girls and boys varsity
teams defeated the Donna Klein Jewish Academy in
big wins last week!
The boys' victory, which was part of a local Jewish
Day School tournament, sent them to the finals,
where they played incredibly well against
the Rabbi Alexander S. Gross Hebrew Academy, losing
in the last moments by three points.
This week was chock-full of games! All
three basketball teams played on Tuesday, including
a huge win by the boys junior varsity team! On
Thursday, the boys varsity and junior varsity teams
each had a basketball game, as did the girls varsity
soccer team.Thursday was a fantastic
evening in the history of WYHS sports! The boys JV
basketball team won their game by 11! The boys
varsity team won with a final score of 81-
56, led by
junior Jon Struhl, who scored 43 points! Senior Yoni
Schiff was absolutely incredible as point guard, and
the entire team came together to shut down the
other team's offense!Although the girls
soccer team did not win, the first WYHS goal of
the season was scored by junior Nicole Tryfus,
with the assist made by sophomore Rebecca Isaacs!
Due to special Chanukah scheduling, next week's
games will take place on Monday and Tuesday
afternoons and evenings. Make sure to check the
calendar in the Quick Links section above for the
latest schedule and location information for all sports
events.

As the Latke Fries |

This afternoon, Mr. Yisrael Neeman, a guest speaker
from Israel, will speak about the Israeli-
Palestinian conflict to the senior Jewish History
classes.
In the picture to the left you can see our
students participating in this past Sunday's
videoconfence with the high school in our Israeli
sister city,
Kiryat Bialik.Several WYHS students
have been participating in
the Partnership 2000 Jewish Roots project with
students from other local Jewish institutions as well
as with teenagers from Kiryat Bialik, Israel. Next
week, the group of Israeli high school
students
will arrive in
Boca for a week-long stay as part of the
exchange program. Several of these
students will be hosted by WYHS families,
and they will all take part in celebrating Chanukah in
and around Boca Raton, including spending a day at
WYHS and joining us for our Chanukah Chagigah.
Please note that the second trimester
begins on Monday!

It'll Be The Best Chanukah Ever |
|
Chanukah is traditionally a very busy week around
WYHS, and this year is certainly no exception! This
promises to be an unforgettable Chanukah week
with all the fantastic activities that are planned!
On the first day of Chanukah, Wednesday, December
8, all students will attend Mesibas at the
Rebbes, which are lavish breakfasts at the
homes of their teachers, after davening together at
school.
Thursday, December 9 is the WYHS Chanukah
Chagigah, beginning after school at 5:35
p.m. with maariv and candle-lighting. Parents
and
families are invited to join in the fun and festivities,
which will last until 8:00 p.m. This event costs $12
per person, excluding WYHS students, who are free!
Please RSVP by Monday by clicking here.
On Friday, classes will end at 11:15 a.m. to make
time for two exciting programs. The boys will enjoy
an afternoon of sports, including shiur vs.
shiur baseball games!By popular
demand, the girls chose not to do sports in favor of a
phenomenal schoolwide scavenger hunt
competition between grades!
The second week of Chanukah is just as fun-filled
and action-packed! There will be a charity
auction of goods and services offered by the WYHS
teachers, a special Eat 'n' Learn breakfast and Torah
learning hour, and varsity vs. faculty basketball and
soccer games for boys and girls, respectively.
School will be dismissed early at 5:00 p.m.
on
Wednesday, December 8 and Monday, December 13
to allow students to be home in time to light
Chanukah candles.

WYHS Goes Hollywood |
|
Although WYHS is physically located in Boca, so
much of what makes the school what it is happens in
the surrounding communities of Hollywood, North
Miami Beach, and Miami Beach.
Close to 30 WYHS students hail from
Hollywood.
In order to better serve this large number of
students and their families, several regular and
unique events now take place in Hollywood.
Students who attend Sunday
mishmar do not have to travel all the
way to Boca! Every Sunday, Judaic Studies teacher
Rabbi Benjy Horowitz drives to Hollywood to run
mishmar at the Young Israel. Sunday
mishmar is also run simultaneously in Boca,
North Miami Beach, and Miami Beach.
Sunday basketball practices take
place in Hollywood, providing a practice location
central to all WYHS students.
The Judaic faculty of WYHS travel to Hollywood to
spend Shabbat with the students and families there
once each year.
This year's Family Shabbat in Hollywood,
held in September, was a tremendous success,
thanks to the warmth and enthusiasm of all the
Hollywood parents!
The recent lecture by adolescent expert Dr. Rona
Novick, the second seminar in the parenting
series being offered by WYHS, was held in
Hollywood, and the turnout was excellent for this
dynamic guest speaker.
In addition, the administration of WYHS looks for
opportunities to get input from the "non-Boca"
parents. The best vehicle for this are the Town
Hall Meetings held in each community. The
Hollywood Town Hall Meeting will be held on
Monday
evening, December 20, location to be
announced.
There will be a Q&A Session for Prospective
Parents in Hollywood on Wednesday, December
22 at 8:15 p.m. at the home of Linda and Danny
Singer.
Finally, some of the most important people in the
WYHS community are from Hollywood. Rabbi
and Mrs. Davis were instrumental in the opening
of
the high school in 1998. Many of the executive and
regular board members are from Hollywood, perhaps
most importantly our school president, Dr. Sam
Lasko.
The participation and commitment of families outside
of Boca is a huge part of the success of WYHS, and
the school looks forward to continuing to service
this great WYHS community as the school
continues to grow.
