From the desk of Rabbi Perry
Tirschwell
This is an historic week for our
school- the first college graduation of a
graduate of our high school, the first marriage of
a WYHS couple and the completion of the
second floor of our school. May we continue to
celebrate more "firsts" together!
I encourage the women of all ages to purchase
tickets now to enjoy our entertaining and highly
professional musical, "Once Upon a Mattress". For
the first time in WYHS history, the shows are
conveniently scheduled for the theatre-going public
on Saturday night and a Sunday matinee, on the first
weekend in February. Please click here to
tell Marcelle how many tickets you'd like to
order. Show details are available as a link below.
As the first half of the school
year
comes to an end with midterm exams, I wish the
hardworking teachers and students of WYHS an
enjoyable winter vacation. Yeshiva High-lites will
appear next
in your inbox three weeks from today.
Shabbat
Shalom

The Week in Review |
|
by sophomore Chava Rubin
Starting the last week before midterms with a
chagigah for Rosh Chodesh
Shvat was a great way to end the first half of
the school year. A beautiful davening lead by
Executive Director Shimmie Kaminetsky was followed
by a delicious breakfast and lively dancing!
Tuesday's program took the School
Shabbaton's theme of "It's Not
All About You" (or "Don't Be a Yitz") to the next
level. Inspirational divrei Torah delivered by
junior Tuvia
Brander and Boca Raton Synagogue's Associate Rabbi
Efrem Goldberg focused on the concept of
Hakarot Hatov, or expressing our need to
show gratitude towards people who help us and the
Creator who sustains us.
This past Sunday, 63 prospective students
took the Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT)
at WYHS. The class of 2009 is expected to
be the largest incoming class in WYHS
history.
After shacharit, the students met 8th graders
from different schools from all over south Florida to
mingle over breakfast.

A Year of Firsts in Guidance |
|
by Guidance Counselor Marilyn
Goldstein
This year has been an exciting year of firsts
for the guidance department.
We just concluded a three part lecture
series which was very well received by our
parent body. These three nationally acknowledged
experts shared with both parents and teachers their
experience and advice on how to raise well adjusted,
observant teenagers. It was really gratifying to see
how many parents attend more than one workshop in
the series.
This year we have two student school culture
groups working on issues that these students
have identified. One is a student-driven group which
keeps expanding due to student interest because the
word has spread and people want to be involved.
Simone Broide is our new associate
counselor. She is primarily focusing on the
freshman class. Simone has connected with the 9th
grade and is helping them with their adjustment to
high school.
My energies have been directed towards a
variety of issues including identification of
student difficulties, faculty in-services, guest
speaker presentations to students, and
brainstorming sessions between the administration
and our visiting experts on a variety of topics
affecting adolescents and school environment.
I want to commend the students whose
learning issues were identified and addressed
on their tremendous success on their recent report
cards.
A major accomplishment this year for some of our
quieter students is the transition into leadership
roles. It makes us all proud.
Our future plans include presenting many
more insightful programs to the school and
community, expanding student-driven efforts, and
most important, helping students become the best
that they can through acceptance of self and
others, using good judgment and making appropriate
decisions.

Yeshiva Storm Teams Having a Great Year |
|
by sophomore Jen
Adler
The Girls Varsity Soccer Team may not be known for
its winning record, but it is known for its
commitment and devotion to the sport. This year's
team has improved tremendously, learning new
techniques and
skills necessary to enhance the game.
The team practices for a few hours three times a
week, including scrimmaging for several hours on
Sunday mornings to build up the endurance
needed in an 80 minute game.
This year the girls have improved both
defensively and offensively. Defensive players
have improved and strengthened their kicks to boot
the ball back to the other side of the field and
quickly prevent the other team from scoring. The
offense has improved their dribbling and trapping
skills and has had more shots on goal this year than
any of the previous years. Due to the strong
defense, the offensive players have been able to run
down the filed and score - making more goals this
season than ever before!
When the season started, the team was a bit
apprehensive as we found out there was a new
coach. Even though this seemed unsettling, Coach
Ozzy has helped the team tremendously and each girl
has learned immensely
from him. Our great coach has inspired every
player on the team. He has instilled in every
girl a dedication to both soccer and the team, and
will continue doing so for upcoming games and
seasons.
Hopefully, the combination of his coaching and our
determination will continue to bear fruit.
Boys
Varsity Wins Four
Straight Games!
by senior Joey
Abady
The Storm extended their winning streak to 4 games
and improved their record to 9-4 with two crucial
victories this week over Summit Christian and
Trinity Christian. Yeshiva overcame an early
10-point deficit to Summit with a dominant third
quarter led by Jake Singer who scored 9 of his game
high 13 points in the period. The Storm shut down
their opponent's offense and with a strong
defensive effort defeated Summit 44-37. In
Thursday night's game the Storm was led by senior
Yoni Schiff who scored a season-high 15 points. The
Storm dictated the pace of the game en route to an
impressive 57-48 win. These two pivotal victories
should serve as confidence builders heading into
Saturday night's highly anticipated match with
Hillel in North Miami Beach.

Yearbook Teaches Creativity, Responsibility and Excellence |
|
This year's yearbook promises to be the best in
the history of WYHS. New in this yearbook are
more color pages, features and humor pages than
ever before. The yearbook staff chose a
theme which they feel truly captures the WYHS
experience,
though they would not reveal their theme to
Yeshiva High-lites.
"Working with WYHS' extremely dedicated and
talented Technology Director Mrs. Claudia
Cohen has
been one of our greatest experiences",
commented
Editor in Chief senior Amanda Ruben. "She has taught
us so much about digital photography, layout and the
power of the computer".The two Editors in
Chief (pictured above) and
their staff have learned that getting others to write,
submit pictures, quotes and art is much harder
than it looks.
Yearbook Editor in Chief senior Shana Maikhor
remarked that "Being yearbook editor has been a
great privilege and fantastic experience. The process
has been arduous but uplifting. Our staff
worked
tirelessly to capture four years of memories. I believe
that the end product truly conveys what our grade is
really about."
