From the desk of Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

The excitement at school this week was palpable (and often audible) as the much anticipated construction of a second floor to our school building began in earnest. Cranes, bulldozers, saws, jack hammers, and trucks of all shapes and sizes are busy at work. Check out Shimmie's article at right.

Mazel tov to Mr. Adam Dobrick on being awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship to study Russian Literature this summer. Mr. Dobrick will first be travelling to the University of Nebraska, the location where all the AP exams written throughout the US are read. Mr. Dobrick has been asked to be a grader of European History AP Exams due to his students' high scores on the test.

I am happy to report that the seniors are having a blast on the Senior Trip, which is at this moment enroute from whitewater rafting in the Carolinas to upstate New York, where Mrs. Kanner and I will join them for Shabbat.

Shabbat Shalom

Sophomore-Faculty Fun in the Sun in the Keys
.
The sophomores had a blast on their class trip to the Florida Keys! The day-long trip was activity packed for both the boys and the girls!

The girls didn't waste a minute, kicking off their day in Key Largo with a glass-bottom boat tour. In addition to seeing some amazing fish and coral, the girls took advantage of the beautiful weather to relax in the sun! A quick lunch was next, followed by some deep-sea snorkeling. The girls swam out to a private coral reef, where they snorkeled at their leisure. They even got their own breathing apparatuses to take home!

For those who still had energy left, kayaking was next, while everyone else relaxed on the shore. Dinner was a do-it-yourself barbecue on the beach, and this amazing day of fun in the sun ended with a gorgeous sunset cruise.

Meanwhile, in Islamorada, the boys' day was packed with activities of a different kind! Although the boys also went snorkeling, the highlight of their day was their afternoon of deep-sea fishing three miles off shore. Notable fisherman was Jordan Lieber, who caught a hammerhead shark! All in all, the group caught over 70 fish!

Back on shore, the boys had their own barbecue and football game on the beach, followed by mincha and ma'ariv, before they boarded their bus for their trip home.

Whew! AP Week Comes to a Close
.
The Advanced Placement (AP) exam period has come to an end, signaling the culmination of a year's worth of college-level coursework for many WYHS sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

This year, AP courses were offered in a wide variety of subjects, such as American History, European History, Psychology, English, Calculus, and Physics. In this year's graduating class, every senior took at least one Advanced Placement course, and three-quarters of the class took two or three AP courses.

The Advanced Placement program has become an integral part of the WYHS college preparatory curriculum. In addition to the ability to earn college credit for high scores on the AP exams, just taking an Advanced Placement course is extremely beneficial for high school students.

By committing to the extra effort of an AP, students gain the edge in preparing for college by improving their skills, especially writing, and getting a taste of college- level coursework. Most importantly, AP courses on a high school transcript help distinguish individual students for the college admissions process.

WYHS is proud of the increasing number of AP courses offered each year, as well as of the overwhelming number of students who choose to take these rigorous courses as part of their already challenging curriculum.

An Exciting Last Full Week of Classes!
.
Next week is the last full week of classes at WYHS, and the halls are buzzing with end of the year activity. On Wednesday, May 19th, a special program will be held to celebrate Yom Yerushalayim.

WYHS founder Rabbi Kenneth Brander will introduce the program by exploring the halachik reasons for saying Hallel on this special holiday. Guest speaker Rabbi Baruch Plotkin of the Boca Raton Kollel will also speak to the school about "How the Kotel Changed His Life and Can Change Yours."

The WYHS drama department is proud to present their second production of the year, "An Actor's Nightmare", which will take place at WYHS on Thursday, May 20th. Don't miss the opportunity to be entertained by the fabulous cast of this play!

On Friday, May 19th, a unique Rosh Chodesh Sivan chagigah is planned to wow WYHS students and faculty alike.

Aspiring student leaders submitted their applications to run in the Student council elections this upcoming week. The student council is comprised of two presidents (one boy and one girl from the senior class), two vice presidents (one boy and one girl from the junior class), and two class representatives from each grade, including eleventh and twelfth.

The student council works closely with program director Rabbi Josh Spodek to help plan and coordinate many of the incredible special programs that take place at WYHS throughout the year. Because past student councils have done such an excellent job and had so much fun, there is an unprecedented number of candidates competing for positions on next year's student council.

All Good Things Must Come to an End
.

The members of the fourth graduating class of WYHS will proudly accept their diplomas and flip their tassels at their graduation ceremony, which will take place on Monday, May 24th, at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, beginning at 7 p.m. with mincha. The largest graduating class in WYHS history will walk down the aisle immediately following mincha at 7:15 p.m. that evening.

The following day, Tuesday May 25th, is Erev Shavuot as well as the last day of classes for the rest of WYHS students! There will be an early 12:15 p.m. dismissal to allow students to prepare for Shavuot.

Final exams for students in grades 9-11 will begin on Tuesday, June 1st and will go until Tuesday, June 8th. Please check the exam schedule in the Quick Links section above for specific schedule information. Exams and grades will be available for students to pick up on Friday, June 11th from 12-1 p.m.

The Second Floor
is Under Way!
by Mr. Shimmie Kaminetsky
Executive Director

I am pleased to announce that the long-awaited second floor construction is under way!

The second floor will provide our students with six large classrooms for additional class sections; a large library which will house more books, computers and space to study; and offices in which staff can meet with students and address their needs.

Safety is our utmost concern while the construction is taking place. A four-foot wall has been built along the entranceway to the school, and the basketball court area is being fenced off

At this time, students and parents can enter the building through the regular entrance. Some parking spaces will need to be blocked off to allow construction trucks to get in and out. The school's recently instituted drop off lane will be moved a safe distance from the construction.

The start of the construction was carefully timed so as to minimize the impact on classes this year. Already, in less than a week, the foundations for the staircases and elevator shaft have begun to take shape and the blocks for the second floor walls have already been loaded on the roof.

Though the completion date of the project is dependent on the weather and the inspectors (among other things), we are hopeful that most of the second floor construction will be completed before the beginning of school in the fall.

If anyone has any questions or concerns, I can be reached at the school office.
