From the desk of Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

Students and teachers returned reinvigiorated from the Chag HaAviv to commemorate the tumultuous events of 20th century Jewish history through Yom Hashoa, Yom Hazikaron and Yom Haatzmaut.

The faculty and I look forward to spending next Shabbat afternoon with the WYHS families from Boca and environs. Click here to e-mail Shimmie Kaminetsky to make your reservation.

We are considering making Wednesday, May 19, a 5:35 dismissal and Thursday, May 20, a 3:20 dismissal to enable us to celebrate Yom Yerushalayim Thursday evening in a very special way. Please click here to tell me if this creates an insurmountable problem for you.

Condolences to the family of Shoshan (02) and Kayla (06) Kowal on the loss of their maternal grandfather.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

A Moving Yom Hashoah
.
Monday's commemoration of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, was the most inspirational in WYHS history. The student council, along with Rabbi Josh Spodek, worked incredibly hard to create a program that was educational, powerful, and meaningful.

The students were greeted in the morning by hallways which were enveloped (see photo below) in black to highlight a series of 43 posters created by the Smion Wiesenthal Center that trace the history of the holocaust.

After davening and breakfast, the students entered the BRS social hall to the sound of their fellow students' voices reading aloud the names of Holocaust victims. The walls of the darkened room were lined with paper containing only the word "Jew" over and over again in hundreds of columns and rows, each representing one actual person who died at the hands of the Nazis.

Students were privileged to hear the firsthand account of Holocaust survivor and beloved grandmother of freshman Jason Mann, Mrs. Regina Glinzman, who survived the holocaust as a young girl hidden in a Christian orphanage in Belgium, among other places.

Students were asked to each light a candle in memory of a Holocaust victim, and to consider the overwhelming tragedy of the number six million. Finally, a moving excerpt from the movie "Sunshine" and the powerful closing words delivered by assistant principal Mrs. Ora Lee Kanner emphasized the importance of identifying as Jews regardless of what culture we live in.

Thank you to Rabbi Spodek and the student council for organizing this incredibly impactful program.

Water, Parrots, Alumni, Freshies, & Ice Cream

Even during vacation, the past few weeks have been packed with WYHS activities!

The pre- Pesach car wash was a huge success! Almost the entire senior class spent the day in the WYHS parking lot, washing and vacuuming over 60 cars in preparation for Pesach! In addition to this important community service, the seniors, with the help of several underclassmen, were able to raise $1300 towards their senior trip! Kudos to seniors Danielle Kowal and Yitty Levine for organizing this event and washing cars the entire day!

During Chol HaMoed Pesach, the amazing WYHS band Under Construction competed in a Battle of the Bands against three other bands from two other South Florida Yeshiva high schools. The musical competition took place at Parrot Jungle, in conjunction with a Chai Lifeline fundraiser that was being run at Parrot Jungle that day. Congratulations to the musicians of Under Construction on a great performance!

The Chol HaMoed activity was not limited to current WYHS students! Several WYHS alumni gathered at the homes of principal Rabbi Perry Tirschwell and assistant Principal Mrs. Ora Lee Kanner to reminisce about old times and catch up on what's new in everyone's lives.

Plans for terrific alumni programs for next year are already under way! In the works are a Thanksgiving weekend alumni-varsity-faculty basketball game and a mid-winter ski trip!

Last weekend, fifteen prospective students from throughout South Florida shared a fun-filled Shabbat with principal Rabbi Perry Tirschwell in Boca. They spent the weekend getting to know each other, as well as meeting some of this year's ninth grade girls and getting the inside scoop on freshman year at WYHS.

Thursday's celebration of Rosh Chodesh Iyar began with a beautiful davening with the whole school together, followed by a bagels, cream cheese, and ice cream breakfast! The highlight of the morning was the announcement of the winners of the senior class auction of services! The big winner was freshman Avi Dennis, who took home five of the coveted 38 prizes!

A Great Showing at the Tennis Districts
.
The WYHS varsity tennis season ended on a high note at the district championships this week. The WYHS team achieved their best finish ever in this year's tournament, which is no small feat considering that this district has produced several current tennis champions!

In one exciting doubles match, senior Avi Amsalem and sophomore Jordan Lieber were tied one set each with American Heritage and lost in an exciting sudden death round.

Congratulations to all the boys on winning every first round match, to junior Ilana Borzak who also won her first round match, and to the entire tennis team on a terrific season!

Great "Yoms", Luncheon, Tributes and Trips Ahead
.

Yom Hazikaron and Yom Haatzmaut will be celebrated throughout the world and at WYHS next Monday and Tuesday, April 26th and 27th.

The Yom Hazikaron program will commemorate the heroism of Israeli war veterans, while Tuesday's Yom Haatzmaut luncheon will celebrate the establishment of the State of Israel with special food and a guest speaker from New York who will share his experiences as an Israeli soldier.

The WYHS Boca Family Shabbat Luncheon will take place on May 1st at the Boca Raton Synagogue. Parents, students and teachers will have a chance to spend time together in a more informal way as they enjoy lunch as well as a special program on that Shabbat afternoon. All North Broward and non-Montoya Circle Palm Beach County families are also invited and will be hosted by faculty members and Boca families.

The Fourth Annual WYHS Sports Recognition Program will take place on Monday, May 3rd, at 4:10 PM. Parents are invited to join as WYHS athletes are recognized for their outstanding achievements throughout this year.

Celebrating the Gift of Israel
by Rabbi Kenneth Brander, WYHS Founder

During the month of Iyar, we need to recognize the historic times in which we live. We and our children can take moments for granted of the like that our great grandparents could not even fathom. We have the opportunity to walk the streets of our own State of Israel, of a united Jerusalem, traversing the same places that were walked by David, Solomon, Hezkiyahu, Ezra, and Rabbi Akiva. As the stones of Israel pulsate with our past, our sense of history and tradition is brought into living color -- drawing from our past to help shape our future.

Israeli Independence Day and Yom Yerushlayim must be days during which we express our thanks to Hakadosh Baruch Hu (God) for this historical gift. During this Hebrew month of Iyar, this month of geulah (redemption), it is our responsibility to talk with our families about the blessing of having a State and our responsibility to support it through our visits, our business, and our charity. If at the present time we do not reside in Israel, it is an issue with which we struggle.

This brief message is not the venue to discuss the possibility of redemption through a natural process or the issues arising from the fact that many of those instrumental in the establishment of the State were not religiously inclined. It is important, however, to note that throughout the philosophical and the halakhic literature of our tradition, a final redemption brought through natural means is no less miraculous than one brought through overt miracles. Furthermore, who God chooses as His agents of redemption is up to Him and not measured by our personal litmus test.

We at the Yeshiva will ensure that these days are celebrated with profound spirit. We hope that you will find time to share your feelings about the modern miracle of the State with your children. Through our actions may we merit to bring the final redemption.
