From the desk of Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

The pre-Pesach season wrapped up with an abridged week that was so chocked-filled, we couldn't resist sending out a highlites. The highlites will, however, go on a much deserved vacation for the next two weeks, reappearing on April 22.

Mazel tov to the seniors who received news about excellent college acceptances today.

Check out the second edition of our "Chodesh Chidush" (which can be downloaded below), filled with divrei Torah about Pesach.

Shabbat Shalom, Chag Kasher V'sameach, and looking foward to seeing you at Sunday's WYHS Pre-Pesach Car Wash,

Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

A Night To Remember
.
On Monday evening, the WYHS juniors and seniors returned to school at 7:30 p.m. to eagerly await the arrival of their beloved former teachers Rabbi Avi and Mrs. Leba Schneider, as well as several WYHS alumni who are currently at home for Pesach on break from their yeshivot and seminaries in Israel.

After taking some time to catch up on what has been happening in everyone's lives since the Schneiders and alumni graduated last June, the official program -- an evening of Torah learning -- began. Each WYHS alumnus led a small group of juniors and seniors in Torah study related to Pesach.

Following this hour of chaburah-style learning, the boys and girls were privileged to hear inspirational shiurim from Rabbi and Mrs. Schneider.

The festivities went late into the night as students, alumni, and the Schneiders enjoyed this unique opportunity to once again learn Torah together within the walls of WYHS.

This year, the Schneiders have informally looked after the WYHS alumni studying in Israel (while managing the birth of a second set of twins and aliyah!). Next year, they will be taking on this responsibility formally as the WYHS Alumni Coordinators in Israel.

Safety and Security Update
.
In a constant effort to maintain and improve school safety and security, WYHS administrators and members of the support staff met with Roberta Clark of the Anti Defamation League (ADL) this week to discuss security issues specific to Jewish insitutions across the country and WYHS in particular. The ADL will begin training the WYHS staff on how to respond to security emergencies in school.

In addition, the school will begin working with Barton Security Services, the company that handles all security at the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County campus. This arrangement means that our security will be monitored and coordinated by the Jewish Federation in conjunction with local law enforcement.

Finally, in response to some safety-related concerns specific to the WYHS campus, a drop-off lane will be created and put into effect in the WYHS parking lot after Pesach. This will allow parents to drop off their children in the morning without creating a hazard for other parents and students. Keep an eye out after Pesach for the new signs directing you where to drop off your children!

Victories on the Court and the Diamond
.
The WYHS varsity tennis team had a victorious week, with several wins on Monday and Tuesday!

Monday's match vs. Donna Klein Jewish Academy featured an exciting tie-breaking win by senior Avi Amsalem, as well as a terrific doubles win (6-5) by sophomores Brian Surasky and Moshe Genet!

In Tuesday's boys match vs. Summit Christian, wins were earned by senior Bryan Lieber (8-7), junior Jeremy Gelbart (8-2), and sophomores Moshe Genet and Brian Surasky, who each defeated their opponent 8-0! The same incredible shutout score was achieved by doubles team freshman Josh Rosenblatt and sophomore Brian Surasky.

The girls also had their share of wins on Tuesday! Congratulations to freshman Shira Borzak and sophomore Devora Greer, who each earned an 8-3 victory! Devora also joined forces with senior Rachel Dolgow in an outstanding doubles victory (8-5)!

The first ever boys baseball game last Sunday was a tremendous success! There was a huge turnout to watch the two WYHS teams face each other in the first of several more intramural games to come!

Congratulations to the winning team on their 5-0 win! Kudos to pitchers freshman Jason Mann, sophomore Dov Lieber, and junior Jake Singer on their amazing pitching, and Yaashar Koach to coach Rabbi Ben Sugerman! Don't miss the upcoming baseball excitement, on Sundays April 18th and 25th and May 2nd and 9th, all at 4 p.m. at South County Regional Park!

The Party Just Begins After Pesach at WYHS
.
Get ready for several activity-packed weeks after Pesach!

On Monday, April 9th, WYHS will observe Yom HaShoah with a special program focusing on Jewish identity and featuring a presentation by a holocaust survivor and grandfather of three WYHS students (freshman Andrea, sophomore Jennifer, and senior Melissa Marder).

Following a move by the Israeli Knesset to observe Yom HaZikaron and Yom HaAtzmaut on Monday and Tuesday, April 26th and 27th (instead of on Sunday and Monday), WYHS will both commemorate fallen Israeli soldiers and celebrate the treasured independence of the State of Israel by hearing from Yeshiva University student and former Israeli army solder Ariel Davis.

Ariel will speak to WYHS students about what students can actually do for Israel, in addition to having Israel in their daily prayers and thoughts.

The WYHS Boca Family Shabbat Luncheon will take place on May 1st at the Boca Raton Synagogue. Parents, students and teachers will have a chance to spend time together in a more informal way as they enjoy lunch as well as a special program on that Shabbat afternoon. All North Broward and non-Montoya Circle Palm Beach County families are also invited and will be hosted by faculty members and Boca families.

The Fourth Annual WYHS Sports Recognition Program will take place on Monday, May 3rd, from 4:15 to 5:35 PM. Parents are invited to join as WYHS athletes are recognized for their outstanding achievements throughout this year.

Building Bridges Across the Sea and Around the Corner
WYHS is currently involved in an innovative new program called Jewish Roots, a project coordinated by the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, which entails interaction with Jewish high school students from different segments of the Boca Raton Jewish community as well as from our Partnership 2000 sister city in Israel, Kiryat Bialik.

The goal of this program is to establish communication and friendship between teenagers from widely different backgrounds. The goal is for these future Jewish leaders to understand the cultural differences between Jewish life in Israel and America and gain insight into each other's worldview.

As part of this incredible program, WYHS students have already begun to meet with their counterparts from Donna Klein Jewish Academy and Community Judaica High School, in preparation for the first video-conference with Israeli teenagers that will take place in May.

At these meetings, such as the one pictured above, students divided into small focus groups to discuss issues of Jewish identity and heritage as well as other issues of pressing concern to Jewish teenagers today.

The program is coordinated at WYHS by Rabbi Benjy Horowitz and on the community level by Jewish Education Commission Director Dr. Leon Weisberg, and will entail both an exchange of students and joint programs run by our graduates studying in Israel.
