A Fitting Tribute |
|
WYHS's fifth annual journal dinner on Wednesday night
was an extraordinary success! Over 200
people turned out to pay tribute to the deserving
honorees.
Dinner was a delicious buffet of exotic cuisine from
all over the world, courtesy of Lasko Caterers.
Dinner guests returned to the buffet again and again to
partake of the freshly carved meats, delicious salads,
and vast array of side dishes.
The program began with an inspirational d'var
Torah by senior Mordechai Hodkin, followed by a
siyum led by WYHS founder Rabbi Kenneth
Brander in honor of Elaine Krasna, mother of
honoree Gary Krasna. Presentations to each honoree
followed the siyum, and each honoree had the
opportunity to respond.
The presentation of the Educator Award to history
teacher Mr. Adam Dobrick was especially moving, as
principal Rabbi Perry Tirschwell shared messages
from the alumni- their thoughts on how Mr. Dobrick
impacted their lives. Congratulations to all
the
honorees, and special thanks to executive director
Shimmie Kaminetsky, journal chairperson Nancy
Markovitch, and everyone else who helped make this
a truly unforgettable evening.

Just In- News from the Classroom |
|
WYHS students have been busy this month working on
several special academic projects assigned in
various
classes.
In the Science Department, biology teacher Mrs. Bambi
Rainbeau makes sure that science is never boring, with
excellent biology labs designed to pique students'
interest and bring the lessons of the textbook into
reality. Recently, as part of a study of the skin,
bones, and muscles, the class dissected chicken wings
so they could see firsthand how tendons and ligaments
hold things together and how muscles work in pairs.
On the Judaic Studies front, students in Rabbi Chaim
Lanner's chumash class have chosen topics from
the book of Bamidbar to research and present to
the class. Each student is responsible for a written
report as well as an oral presentation, and the projects
are graded on educational value as well as
originality! Thus far, projects have included
videos, tzitzit-shaped cookies (see picture
above), a challah-baking demonstration, and more!
With these projects, the class hopes to cover all of the
major topics in Bamidbar by the end of the year.
As a tribute to the excellence of the WYHS Hebrew
Language Department, five students (including one
alumnus!) had their submissions published in
"Tov
Lichtov", a Hebrew language creative writing
journal written by day school students across
America
and Canada. Congratulations to sophomores Batyah
Weiss and Yael Hirth, seniors Yitty Levine and Shayna
Hoenig, and alumnus Maya Tansman ('03) on having
their work chosen for this journal!

WYHS Plays In the Big Apple |

The WYHS boys varsity basketball team is currently on
the road in New York City, participating in Yeshiva
University's Red Sarachek Basketball
Tournament from Thursday, March 18th through
Monday, March 22nd. The Yeshiva Storm is one of
18 teams from across the United States and Canada to
take part
in this annual event.
The Storm played their first game on Thursday, taking
on the Akiva Pioneers from Detroit! The game, which
was broadcast live at www.macslive.com, was very
exciting, with the Storm taking a first quarter 16-1
lead! Although the Pioneers came on strong to
take and hold the lead in the second and third
quarters, with nine seconds left in the game the score
was tied at 41. In the final moments of the game, the
Akiva Pioneers hit three free throws to win 44-41.
Don't worry, however, because there is more
Yeshiva Storm tournament basketball to come
beginning again on Saturday night. Click below for the
Yeshiva
University website's update on the tournament, and go
to www.macslive.com to hear the games broadcast
live.

Admissions WYHS Style- Understanding the Process |
|
The admissions process is in full swing at
WYHS! Beginning with our Open House the weekend
before Thanksgiving and ending with acceptance
decisions in February and March, prospective
students' have been submitting their applications and
they are being reviewed on a first come, first served
basis.
The admissions committee is comprised of members
with a wide
spectrum
of viewpoints, including representatives
from Humanities, Math and Science, Judaic Studies,
Guidance, and the Administration. These varied
perspectives allows the committee to ensure that all
students who are invited to enroll in WYHS are
committed to
academic and religious growth and can handle
a rigorous dual curriculum program.
The admissions committee's evaluation of each
applicant is thorough. In addition to reviewing each
prospective student's application, three years of report
cards, SSAT
scores, and recommendations from their English, Judaic
and Math teachers, the committee contacts
each applicant's middle school principal and/or
community
rabbi. Of course, this is all in addition to personal
interviews with each applicant by at least two
WYHS staff members. This
extensive and thorough admissions process
also enables WYHS administrators to plan in advance
for the particular needs of the incoming class.
