From the desk of Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

This weekend WYHS is hosting its Third Girls Invitational Basketball Tournament. Not all games are open to the public- fans should check with the school on Friday afternoon at some point after 2 PM to find out Saturday night's schedule.

News Flash for all you advance planners! Please note a change in next year's winter vacation dates. The BJE of Greater NY has moved it one week later than previously announced to 1/22/05-1/30/05.

Purim is just one week from this Saturday night! Parents or students should click here to tell Executive Director Shimmie Kaminetsky how many members of their family will be joining us at Sportsmall for a fun-filled WYHS Purim Chagiga.

The Greatest Rosh Chodesh Adar in WYHS History
.
This month's Topsy Turvy Rosh Chodesh chagigah drew its theme from one of the well known aspects of the story of Purim. In the megilla, Haman is killed instead of Mordechai and the Jews are victorious over their oppressors. At WYHS, this idea was expressed slightly differently.

The chagigah took place outdoors instead of inside, with decorations hung on bricks and trees instead of walls and mirrors! The hot dog and hamburger barbecue breakfast could have passed for dinner, and the performance of WYHS band Under Construction was followed by the appearance of "Over Construction", a motley crew of WYHS teachers who amazed everyone (even themselves) with their ability to make music!

In addition to the hearty food, great music, and, of course, lively dancing, students and teachers came to school in topsy-turvy apparel! Clothes were mismatched, inside-out, upside-down, and backwards as students vied for the best outfit award!

Following the chagigah, the Judaic Studies faculty mixed things up a little further by switching classes with each other and teaching students that they do not teach during a regular school day!

A great time was had by all, and this Rosh Chodesh chagigah whet everyone's appetite for the phenomenal Purim chagigah coming up next Saturday night, March 6th at the Sports Mall in Deerfield!

Students Defeat Faculty in Close Sat. Nite Showdown
.
Last Saturday night's faculty vs. varsity basketball challenge was truly a battle of the generations! WYHS teachers dusted off their sneakers in an attempt to defeat the stars of the boys varsity basketball team.

The game was exciting from the first whistle to the last buzzer and every second in between. The teachers played some tough defense and ripped up the court in their drive to the basket, but they couldn't hold off the Storm offense. The game's high scorer was sophomore Jon Struhl, who led his team to a 51-44 victory.

The bleachers were packed with student and teacher fans who cheered like crazy for the team of their choice. Math teacher Mr. Jason Boynton and History teacher Mr. Adam Dobrick got the loudest cheers for their fierce steals and excellent ball- handling, respectively!

The halftime show featured two shooting contests, including one that pitted brother against brother as sophomore Steven and senior Eric Marin took to the court. Judaic Studies teacher Mrs. Esther Grossman joined the three-point contest, but couldn't beat girls varsity basketball player freshman Alyssa Muckley.

Congratulations to the boys varsity basketball team on their (frightningly narrow) victory over the WYHS faculty all-stars!

WYHS Goes on the Road for Recovering Student
.
Although freshman David Belolo has not been back at school since breaking his leg several weeks ago, he is still very much a part of daily school activity!

Beginning last Shabbat afternoon, when thirty teenagers made the half-hour trek to the Belolo home for mincha and seudah shlishit, David's friends and peers have gone to his house to make a minyan for him every day!

Each day, David is visited by two of his teachers, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. In addition to filling him in on the school- related events of the week, teachers are working with David to stay current with his schoolwork so that he can rejoin his classes when he returns to school.

David's gemara class, along with teacher Rabbi Josh Spodek, travel to David's house every morning for davening, breakfast, and shiur. In addition, Thursday night and Sunday morning mishmars now take place in the Belolo kitchen, which is beginning to look just like a classroom!

We are happy to report that David is getting stronger and better each day, due in large part to the outpouring of love and sympathy he received from his fellow students and teachers. We look forward to David coming back to school in the very near future!

WYHS' Broadway Musical This Week
The WYHS drama department is proud to present its production of Into the Woods, a Stephen Sondheim musical that tells the story of many of our beloved fairy tale characters, who journey "into the woods," each in search of something in particular that they need.

In the course of their journey, the characters, including Little Red Riding Hood and her arch-nemesis the Big Bad Wolf, the lovely Cinderella, and Jack (of Beanstalk fame), and meet up and decide to help each other attain their goals.

While the play is a lighthearted and fresh look at well known fairy tales and childhood favorite characters, Director and WYHS English teacher Ms. Liz Saddler comments, "on a deeper level it teaches valuable moral lessons by exploring the serious themes of marriage, parenting, and adolescence, among others."

The cast, which includes several actresses from each of the grades, has worked incredibly hard to put on a fantastic show with a professional air, and they are totally prepared for the opening night curtain to rise.

The show opens on Tuesday, March 2nd at 7:30 p.m. at the intimate Crest Theatre in Delray Beach, and will be showing again on Wednesday, March 3rd at the same time and place. Tickets are $18 for general admission, $10 for students and children, and $25 for reserved seating in the first two rows.

Don't miss this incredible production! To purchase tickets or for more information, please call the WYHS school office at (561) 417-7422.
