Experts Inspire Students, Parents & Teachers |

WYHS had the privilege this week to host world
renown
substance abuse expert Rabbi Dr.
Abraham Twerski (pictured at left). The impact of
this
visit was felt by
parents, faculty, and students alike. Over 300
people
attended Rabbi Twerski's Tuesday evening lecture,
where he spoke to parents about the overwhelming
drug and alcohol crisis among teenagers today and how
parents can be involved in prevention and
intervention.
Rabbi Twerski also spoke to the entire student body
about issues of self esteem and self
discovery. He
illustrated his message with Peanuts cartoons, using
their humor to convey something much more meaningful
about how people cope with low self
confidence Throughout the day
Rabbi
Twerski
met with small groups of students to bring these issues
to a more personal level. Before he left WYHS,
Rabbi Twerski met with school administrators over
dinner to highlight their role in the lives of
students
who are facing these critical issues.
School administrators also met with Dr. John
Krug,
Dean of Student Life and Welfare at the Frisch School
in Paramus, NJ. Dr. Krug has long been involved in
school psychology and has become an expert in that
field. Dr. Krug met with WYHS administrators to help
create a multi-year plan for growth of the
school
guidance department.
Also visiting from Frisch was Mrs. Lila Korn, who not
only teaches Jewish History there, but was
instrumentally involved in the creation of Frisch's
Integrated Jewish/General History Curriculum.
Mrs. Korn
met with Jewish History teachers at WYHS to help
enhance the current curricula and work towards a more
integrated history program.

Students Hear Eyewitness Iraq Report |
|
Last Friday, two Torah SheBa'al Peh classes were
privileged to hear from U.S. Army Captain Rabbi
Horowitz (no relation to our Israel Army Private Rabbi
Horowitz!), who served as a chaplain in Iraq for
four
months last year.
Rabbi Horowitz spoke to the girls about his experiences
in Iraq, including organizing a Pesach Seder for
anyone
with any Jewish connections who wanted to
participate, and saying prayers for each of the soldiers
before they went into combat.
The girls also watched a video and Power Point
presentation of Rabbi Horowitz's time in Iraq,
specifically of his visits to ancient Jewish sites like the
ruins of Babylon and Yechezkel's tomb. Rabbi
Horowitz
showed one picture of an ancient statue depicting
victorious Babylonians stomping on defeated Jews. He
emphasized the irony of the fact that thousands of
years later, the Jewish nation is alive and strong while
ancient Babylon sits in ruin.

Congratulation to the boys Junior Varsity Basketball
team on winning their last game of the season
against Florida Bible! To show off their basketball
prowess, members of the JV team played one-on-one
against their rabbis and teachers during lunch every
day this week. In the picture above, freshman Jason
Mann takes on (and defeats) Executive Director
Shimmie Kaminetsky in front of a large crowd.
These lunchtime games also helped build hype for
this Saturday night's varsity vs. staff basketball
challenge! This fierce competiton will take place
on Saturday night, February 21st at 8 p.m. at Boca
Prep (SEK). Everyone is invited and encouraged to
come
cheer on the faculty and varsity teams! To
get
to Boca Prep, take I-95 to Glades Road. Go west
on
Glades past Rt. 441/S.R. 7 to the second left, which is
Diego Dr. South. The entrance to Boca Prep (SEK) will
be on
your right.
Congratulations also to both the boys and girls varsity
tennis teams on their big victories on Monday night!
All the boys on the team won their sets,
sweeping their opponents from Summit Christian 7-0!
The girls won their match 4-3, with
freshman Shira Borzak, junior Amanda Schiff, and senior
Melissa Marder each winning their sets. Senior Rachel
Dolgow and freshman Shira Borzak also won their
doubles game.
The boys varsity basketball team lost a tough playoff
game this week to Trinity Christian. Although they
ultimately did not win, the entire Yeshiva Storm
lineup played well, holding the lead early in the
game. The girls varsity basketball team lost
their championship playoff game last weekend against
Lake Worth Christian, however their second place
rank in their district earned them a spot in the
regional quarterfinals!

Best Delegate Awards Go to WYHSers |

Yeshiva University Model UN in New
YorkEight WYHS students
participated in this year's Yeshiva University Model UN
conference for Jewish day school students from across
the country. Under the guidance of advisor Mr. Adam
Dobrick, students worked hard throughout the year,
preparing to represent both Israel and Qatar at
this year's conference.
The hundreds of participants from dozens of
schools
were divided into committees, or summit groups, where
students from each school met to formally debate the
issues facing the countries they
represented. At the Middle East Summit,
students focused on the issue of Palestinian
refugees and struggled to define
terrorism. This committee ultimately passed a
resolution that called for a Palestinian state, but WYHS
senior Josh Levy, representing Israel, ensured that all
of Israel's objectives were also met.
At the end of the conference, one delegate from each
summit group of 20-30 students was honored as that
group's best delegate. To be chosen for this award, a
student had to possess thorough knowledge of the
relevant issues and a strong ability to debate the
points of contention. Congratulations to WYHS
seniors Mordechai Hodkin and Josh
Levy for each being named Best Delegate of their
committee!
