The Week in Review |
|
The freshman class had a blast this Tuesday at their
barbecue and Miami Heat basketball game (see pictures
at right)! After school ended on Tuesday, the
freshmen made their way to Rabbi Spodek's house,
where they consumed an unbelievable amount of
hot dogs and hamburgers!After the
barbecue, the freshmen traveled to Miami to watch the
Heat take on the Los Angeles Lakers! Although
attempts to appear on the Jumbo-Tron were
unsuccessful, everyone had a
fantastic time cheering like crazy for the team
of their choice in what turned out to be an incredible
basketball game!
Rabbi Tirschwell and Mrs. Kanner traveled to
Englewood, NJ last weekend to spend Shabbat with
many of the WYHS alumni! This first-ever alumni
shabbaton provided an opportunity for everyone to
catch up on life after WYHS and to reconnect with old
friends and teachers. Thank you to alumni liason
Chava Turk (WYHS '02) for coordinating this successful
weekend!
On Thursday, WYHS was honored to host two very
special guest speakers. Rabbi Ari Kahn, director of the
Bar Ilan University one-year program for overseas
students and teacher at Aish HaTorah in Jerusalem,
delivered a lively and thought-provoking
speech to all WYHS girls about a new, more
sophisticated understanding of the Purim story.
The senior girls were then privileged to hear from Rabbi
Menachem Nissel, distinguished author and teacher at
several well-known seminaries and yeshivas throughout
Israel. Rabbi Nissel, who spoke to the girls as part
of their Leadership Training Seminar (LTS),
focused on finding your unique mission in life by
discovering your true self. On a related note,
the LTS girls visited Brauser Maimonides
Academy last week to give mishmar about
Purim to the middle school girls.

First National Merit Scholarship Finalists in WYHS History |
|
WYHS is proud to congratulate seniors Danielle
Kowal and Mordechai Hodkin (pictured
above), the first
National Merit Scholarship Award finalists in school
history!This distinction is no small
achievement! Of the 1.3 million students who take the
PSAT each year, 50,000 earn scores high enough to
enter the National Merit Scholarship Program. Only
15,000 finalists are selected from among those
high scorers!
Beginning in March, the National Merit Scholarship
Corporation (NMSC) will notify approximately 8000
finalists that they have been selected to receive a
Merit Scholarship. The NMSC will also announce the
scholarship recipients in four separate major news
media events.
To become a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, a
student has to have superior grades, stellar
recommendations, and an impressive resume.
Both Mordechai and Danielle are planning on
learning next year in yeshivot before embarking
on their college studies.
