From the desk of Rabbi Perry Tirschwell
We welcome over 100 new subscribers with
this week's
edition of Yeshiva High-lites, bringing close to 900
students, parents, grandparents, teachers and
friends "into the WYHS loop".
WYHS participates in Florida's league for high school
sports, the FHSAA. FHSAA rules dictate that team
members can not play in games until they submit
certain forms, which are available in the Links section
at right. Don't forget that you now need
Adobe
Acrobat
Reader to read the links in the highlites. If you
need this free program, click on the link below the
article about our coordination with our feeder schools,
so these documents will be easier to read and print!

The Busy Week That Was |
|
Last Friday WYHS students and faculty gathered to
wish happy
birthday to Executive Director Shimmie Kaminetsky.
Perhaps the highlight of this impromptu birthday
party
was the delicious birthday cake that everyone enjoyed
as part of breakfast!
Over 75 WYHS girls and teachers
packed into the home of faculty member Mrs. Esther
Grossman for last
Friday night's girls-only tisch. The
singing was extremely
lively, thanks especially to the freshman girls, and two
inspirational divrei torah were given by
sophomore Batyah Weiss and junior Atara Aroll.
Tuesday morning, the boys were inspired by special
guest speaker Rabbi Shaya Cohen (pictured at left), a
nationally recognized expert on at-risk
teenagers and the issues facing Jewish teens in
America today. Afterwards, Rabbi
Cohen met with students one-on-one to discuss their
individual challenges. On Tuesday afternoon,
students enjoyed a
thought-provoking and entertaining lecture by Dr.
David
Luchins, Chairman of Political
Science at Touro College in New York and former
Senior Advisor to U.S. Senator Pat Moynihan. Dr.
Luchins spoke about the "shifting sands" of the Middle
East peace process, as well as the different
approaches of the Republican and Democratic parties
to the situation in Israel.
Amongst the Israel yeshivot and seminary that made
presentations this week at WYHS were two new
schools, Sha'alvim
for Women and Yeshivat Eretz HaTzvi (for
men). Many students (and a number of parents)
attended the meetings to learn information about these
unique programs.
WYHS teachers worked "overtime" this week to meet
with parents during an unprecedented two nights of
parent-teacher conferences! Thank you to all the
parents who took advantage of this opportunity to
meet with their children's teachers!
After Monday night's conferences, parents had the
opportunity to
attend a college finance seminar, given by
the College Funding Group. Parents learned essential
information about filling out financial aid forms to
achieve the best results. Parents of students in all the
various grades learned what they can do right now to
begin preparing for college tuition. In addition, the
College Funding Group offered a free phone
consultation to every parent that attended the
seminar.

Sophomores are truly enjoying WYHS' expanded art
program. Under the leadership of art
instructor and artist Mr. Marc Greenblum,
students have already completed several drawing
projects, such as portraits done in pointillism (pictured
at right). Thay are about to venture into the world of
still-life painting!
Congratulations to the boys varsity soccer team on
their 4-3 win over Boca Prep in a district
playoff game
on Monday. After falling behind 2-0, the Yeshiva Storm
rallied to tie the game at 2-2 at the end of the first
half! The score was again tied 3-3 in the second half
when junior Jake Singer scored the winning goal!
Unfortunately, the Yeshiva Storm were
eliminated from the playoffs in a second-round loss to
Lake Worth Christian on Tuesday.
The winter sports season has begun! As we
congratulate the boys soccer and girls volleyball teams
on their incredible seasons, we welcome girls
soccer
and basketball as well as boys JV and varsity
basketball teams! All student athletes
must have
their
FHSAA forms in before the season starts in
order to be
eligible for play. Click on the quick link (at right) for a
copy of these forms.
Don't miss the girls varsity soccer team's season
opener on Monday at Lake Worth Christian at 4
p.m. You can also catch two other exciting girls
soccer games next week on Wednesday and Thursday
at Veterans Park!

Working Closely with Our Feeder Schools |
|
WYHS places great importance on working with its
feeder schools to help enhance each student's
experience as he or she makes the leap from
middle school to high school. To achieve that goal,
several important programs take place throughout the
course
of the year.
This past Monday, WYHS hosted a faculty in-service
seminar (pictured above are Hebrew language teachers
from
WYHS and a number of middle schools) run by the JEC
(Jewish Education Commision) of the Jewish Federation
of South Palm Beach County to study the
transition from middle school to high
school. Members of the WYHS faculty were joined
by colleagues from Hillel Day School of Boca Raton and
Hebrew Academy Community School in Margate to
discuss the specific
challenges of this transition. The program included an
opportunity for teachers from all schools to meet in
small groups to brainstorm ideas for easing the
adjustment each student must make in their move
from
middle school to high school.
Another exciting program that has been expanded this
year is the opportunity for WYHS seniors to teach
eighth
grade students at Hillel Boca, Hebrew Academy
Margate and Brauser Maimonides Academy. Several
times
throughout the course of the year, the WYHS
seniors will
teach middle school students material they
prepare
each week during their Leadership Training Seminar.
In addition to these valuable programs for faculty and
students, WYHS organizes both
joint administration and departmental meetings
each year with the Hillel, Hebrew Acdemy and
Maimonides to discuss transition-related issues such
as curriculum development and expectations.
