From the desk of Rabbi Perry Tirschwell

Arguably WYHS' best first trimester yet ends this coming Wednesday with a much deserved Thanksgiving break for our hardworking students and teachers. Yeshiva High-lites will appear next two weeks from today, on the eve of the School Shabbaton.

Our sincere condolences to the family of senior Doba Abrams on the loss of Mr. Yoni Abrams' father. Shiva will be observed at 7585 Martinique Blvd. in Boca today through next Wednesday morning.

I look forward to seeing many of you at tonight and tomorrow's Hollywood Family Shabbat and Sunday's Open House for Prospective Students and Parents.

Shabbat Shalom

The student council returned from last weekend's Eimatai Conference pumped and ready to revolutionize the school with their new ideas! Senior class president Justin Kohlhagen remarked that "the weekend with Eimatai was an amazing experience. It taught me so much about what it means to be a leader in the Jewish community, even now while I'm still in high school." A number of the students, pictured above, saw snow for the first time in their lives.

WYHS' highly talented and beloved history instructor Mr. Adam Dobrick just returned from Chicago, where he attended the National Council of Social Studies (NCSS) conference. Over 5000 people from all over the United States and dozens of other countries attended this conference. As part of the program, Mr. Dobrick had the opportunity to engage in roundtable discussions about history curricula, as well as participate in workshops focusing on the newest research and technology in subject areas such as economics and civic education.

WYHS' First Town Meeting, which took place in Miami Beach on Wednesday evening kicked off a whole fall series, coming soon to a neighborhood near you! Parents and Principal Rabbi Tirschwell and Executive Director Mr. Shimmie Kaminetsky devised a number of excellent ideas to make the WYHS experience even more enjoyable and impactful. On three consecutive Wednesday evenings in December (3rd, 10th, and 17th), town meetings will be held in North Miami Beach, Boca, and Hollywood, respectively.

The hard work of Coach Diego Crespo and the varsity team is begininng to pay off in Girls Soccer in the second week of the season. The girls feel that their skills have improved dramatically.

As the first trimester draws to a close, WYHS program to teach Israel advocacy the David Project moves to phase two. Mr. Adam Dobrick has finished making presentations to each of the grades, and has charged the students with their missions for the year. Next trimester, students will begin working on these projects, to prepare them for leadership roles on the college campus and beyond. Next Tuesday's Rosh Chodesh program promises to be both exciting and inspirational! Following davening, students will enjoy a HUGE breakfast and live music by the new and improved WYHS school band, Under Construction!

Special guest speaker Rabbi Simcha Scholar, the Executive Director of Chai Lifeline, will kick off next month's theme, the importance of saving a life. Throughout the month of Kislev, students will hear a variety of guest speakers discuss different aspects of this theme, such as the halachik implications of organ donation, genetic testing, and life-saving techniques.

Tuesday is also yearbook picture retake day for all ninth, tenth, and eleventh graders. Students who are interested in retaking their yearbook picture must sign up in school by Monday.

On Wednesday evening, the senior class is hitting the town for a night of food and fun! After meeting for dinner at Levy's of Hollywood, the class will head to the Office Depot Center for some NHL hockey Florida Panthers style!

This week's two day boys varsity basketball tournament will mark the beginning of another exciting season! The Yeshiva Storm will play at 6 p.m. on Monday, November 24 at the Landmark Learning Center in Miramar. Tuesday's game time is dependent on the outcome of Monday's game.

Because there will be no school on Thursday, Friday, or Sunday in honor of Thanksgiving, next Wednesday will follow a Friday schedule (with Wednesday bell times) with a 2:45 p.m. dismissal.

Got to Relieve the Pressure of Studying?
    by Mrs. Dana Koldys

    WYHS Learning Specialist

Organizational and study skills are not only essential for a successful high school career, they are necessary for a stable and successful life. The following is my top ten list for a stress free lifestyle:

    1. Keep a homework planner that you actually write in and refer to regularly.

    2. Write a weekly study schedule in order to avoid procrastinating and staying up all night the night before an assignment is due. It is most helpful to write this schedule on Friday in order to be prepared for the upcoming week.

    3. Be realistic when making your schedule by asking yourself questions like, "When am I most mentally alert?" or "Do I have other responsibilities to take into consideration, ie: Mishmar, basketball practice, or babysitting my younger brother?"

    4. Follow the study schedule, giving yourself 15 minute breaks every 45 minutes. This will keep you from burning out too early in your studies. Also, reward yourself after a completed task. Cookies are my personal favorite!

    5. Set realistic long and short-term goals. Be careful not to set completing an entire essay in one sitting as a goal. EVERYONE knows that you cannot possibly complete an acceptable essay in one sitting. In this case you are only setting yourself up for failure.

    6. Study in increments. Separate information into about 3-4 sections and study the material over a period of 3-4 days. Do not worry about not having enough time. You have already written a schedule for the week and have allotted enough time for this.

    7. Study in groups. You would be amazed how much you can learn when you have to explain it to someone else.

    8. Do your homework at home. This is a novel concept. Most students are under the misconception that teachers give homework in order to keep the students busy. What the student may not understand is that every homework, essay, quiz, or in-class assignment is a stepping stone to the final product - the test.

    9. Know your teacher. It is important to understand your teacher's style and adapt to it. Building a rapport with your teacher and understanding and accepting your responsibilities in each of your classes will help you achieve success in each class.

    10. Constant checks and balances. In both school and "the real world" it is extremely important to monitor your success. Having success in anything is wonderful but to keep this success ongoing, you must constantly monitor your progress, reevaluate your actions, and sometimes come up with a new plan of action. Remember, a successful life is not a final outcome, it is a constant work in progress.
