The Week in Review

The Sophomore Trip to NYC was a fantastic success. Our students certainly traveled the farthest of the thousands of people who went to the SOY Sefarim Sale at Yeshiva University. A number of students saw snow for the first time in their lives. Highlights included the NBC Studios Tours, a New Jersey Nets game, Ground Zero, Times Square, Lincoln Square Synagogue, Dougies and a lot of other Kosher restaurants. Save the date for our drama society's production of the hilarious Neil Simon comedy "Fools" on Wednesday, May 21st at the historic Crest Theatre in downtown Delray Beach. The play was cast this week, and rehearsals start in earnest next week. On Wednesday, the national director of Magen David Adom, the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross, came to accept a check for $1,000 from our tzedakah committee. He spoke only minutes after a horrific bombing in Haifa, and shared breaking news from the scene which he received on his cellphone. Our students wrote letters addressed to specific soldiers in the elite Givati paratroop brigade Shaked stationed along the Gaza Strip, which has been "adopted" by the Boca Raton Synagogue (due to the efforts of YHS parent Avi Tansman). The students shared with the soldiers all that they are doing on behalf of the matzav in Israel, and how much they appreciate the soldiers protecting our homeland. Regular readers of this newsletter may remember the heartfelt thank you letters our students received from the soldiers. The student Committee on Israel Action (CIA) take- over of the Albertsons Bakery on Tuesday was great fun and a great fundraiser. Thanks to the Albertsons Supermarket of Boca Raton for donating the cookies and icing and letting the students "have a ball" decorating. Click here for really great Albertsons pictures »

A Fantastic Color War Brings in Adar II

On Thursday, Shamayim(heaven) and Aretz (earth) teams competed in a blue vs. green color war. After a somewhat (?) believable breakout Wednesday afternoon (Rosh Chodesh Adar), the students of each team volunteered for the various art, music, sports, comedy, academic, and speech-making competitons. There was fierce rivalry in Boys & Girls Basketball, Soccer, Football, Volleyball, Track and Field, Tug of War, apache race, college bowl and team cheers. Memorable moments included skits by each team about the teachers, a "Fear Factor" style eating competition, beautiful team banners that will adorn our hallway, lecture length divrei Torah tracing each team's theme in the Bible, and team songs (click on the link above in the right margin to read the moving, winning ballad). It was a ruach-filled day in which the students exhibited sportmanship, creativity, ingenuity and sensitivity. Click here for additional Color War pictures... »

Next Week at YHS

Representatives of our L'Maan Achai program will be traveling to NY with Rabbi Spodek to partcipate in the National L'Maan Achai Siyum HaTorah at Yeshiva University on Thursday, March 13. This week, the Tzedakah Committee will be conducting a fundraiser for Chai Lifeline. Students purchase cards on which they can write notes to their friends and teachers. These are attached to creative "mishloach manot" which are put together by the Tzedakah Committee. They will be distributed to each student and teacher on Thursday. YHS Moves to NMB! On the weekend of March 14-15, Parshat Zachor, the Judaic faculty of the school will be taking YHS on the road to North Miami Beach. The NMB families and rebbeim will be enjoying a Shabbat meal together, and the faculty will be housed and hosted for a meal at the families' homes.

Purim and Beyond

Dismissal on Taanit Esther, Monday March 17, is at 1:45 PM. Please make reservations (click on the link in my letter at the beginning of the highlites) for our annual Purim Chagigah, which will take place on Purim night, Monday, March 17 at 6:30 PM at the Embassy Suites in Boca. We hope that all the students and their families (with or without costumes) will be able to join us for Megillah, break-fast dinner, dancing, and a special power point presentation on the funnest night of the YHS year. There is no school on Purim and Shushan Purim (Tuesday and Wednesday, March 18 & 19). Our Boys Varsity Basketball Team will be traveling to New York on Shushan Purim to compete with teams from throughout the US in Yeshiva University's Annual Red Saracheck Tournament. Our freshman girls will be traveling to the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County campus to pack food for the needy at the Forster Family Kosher Food Pantry on Tuesday, March 25. World-renown inspirational speaker Rabbi Pesach Krohn will be addressing the student body (with musical accompaniment!) on Thursday, March 27.
