From the desk of Rabbi Perry Tirschwell
Don't miss the great links in this weeks' high- lites;
photos of the smash hit YHS production of Annie and Saturday night's
student-teacher bowlathon, updated calendars for this Spring and
next year, a dinner journal ad blank, the entire tennis season
schedule and an itinerary of next week's sophomore trip to NY.
Good news for our student athletes! The FHSAA has redrawn
the districts for our sports teams for next year, cutting their
travel time in a big way. Our teams will predominantly play teams in
Boca and northern Broward County. There are only two schools to the
north of us in each of our team's districts.
Mazel tov to our acclaimed European and Jewish History instructor
Mr. Adam Dobrick, on being awarded a scholarship to study
British history and literature at Edinburgh University in Scotland
for three weeks during the summer. The English Speaking Union of
Palm Beach County annually awards a humanities teacher with this
very special professional development opportunity.
Mazel tov to our school president Pamela Turk and her
husband Jonathan and Jewish history instructor Chaim
Rosov on being honored at the Chabad of Boca Raton Dinner on
March 30.
Mazel tov to Boys Basketball Assistant Coach Dr. David
Kornbluth on his being honored at the Young Israel of Hollywood
dinner this Sunday.

Week in Review |

Last Friday, Rabbi Herschel Schachter, Rosh
Kollel of Yeshiva University visited the school. Rabbi
Schachter spoke to the entire school about the impending war
and our tradition's view on war after our weekly communal
recital of the entire Sefer Tehillim. During breakfast, Rabbi
Schachter was the guest lecturer for the students who are
participating in the L'Maan Achai program in memory of the
victims of Arab terror in Israel. Afterwards, Rabbi Schachter
gave shiurim to boys and girls classes about Purim and Eid
Zomeim.
With a shopping cart on loan from publix, Rabbi
Spodek's GS and GH classes kicked off a canned food
drive which will be distributed by the Boca Helping Hands
community organization.
On Monday, February 24, Dr. Jeff Gurock,
American Jewish history expert and professor at Yeshiva
University, spoke to the junior class about how far we as Jews
have come in the last 60 years in America. He used American
Jews' participation in professional sports as a vehicle of
studying our acculturation.
On Monday night, the first of this year's series of
Parent Education Workshops took place. The parents and
Dr. Jaime Huysman discussed setting boundaries, and the
transition between early and later adolescence. Upcoming
sessions will take place on March 24, May 5 and June 2 from
7:00 to 8:00 PM.
On Tuesday, the sophomore boys learned an important lesson
when they went to bury a Meit Mitzvah, a person
who has no one to bury him/her. The Talmud tells us that
participating in a Meit Mitzvah supercedes all other
mitzvot.
Our boys and girls tennis teams each played matches
this week. Freshman Jordan Lieber is still undefeated since
the beginning of the season, and won his match 8-3. Sophomore
Jenn Marder won her match 8-1, and doubles teams Rachels Begas
& Dolgow and Jenn and Melissa Marder won their matches as
well.
Thursday evening, over 60 students went to hear former CNBC
commentator Ambassador Alan Keyes as guests of The
Community Kollel and Boys Town Jerusalem.
The students in Mr. Rosov's senior Holocaust and
Zionism class reenacted a Judenrat meeting (Jewish
ghetto council), weighing the options of resistance and
collaboration and the lifeboat ethics issues that come along
with each. The class was videotaped and will be sent to the
Holocaust Museum in Washington, which has asked teachers for
creative lesson plans that it can share with other schools.

"Hardknocks" for Annie on "Easy Street" |

Our drama program reached new heights this week
with the production of Annie. The use of the professional
Crest Theater in Delray Beach and the multiple performances
will no doubt be precedents for future YHS production. 500
people saw the play between the two performances, with a nice
showing from Broward and Dade Counties.
Congratulations on a job well done to the 30 members of the
all female cast and crew, and especially to Director Liz
Saddler on her first YHS production. Auditions for a
comedy and drama to be p- erfomed in the spring will take
place this Wednesday after school.

Rabbi
Sugerman Outbowls Them All |
|
The sophomore class and a dozen teachers
had a great time together Saturday night bowling. The rabbis
and Mrs. Koldys were the ones to beat. Rabbi Sugerman bowled a
186 game and averaged 150 between the three games. It was a
night of good, clean fun and comradery.
