Students and teachers returned from a week of friends, family and
fun to review midterms and PSAT's and begin the second half
of the academic year. The joyful month of Adar set the tone
for the second trimester (Rosh Chodesh is this coming Sunday and
Monday) with a Surprise Party / Chagiga for a certain middle-aged
school administrator (see below).
During the vacation, Rabbi Horowitz & Mrs. Kanner visited
over 20 Israeli yeshivot and seminaries (including 4 brand new
institutions) to which our students will be applying. They checked
up on and met with each of our graduates studying there (see photo
at right). They met with the Deans and Roshei Yeshiva of the schools
to make sure that we are arming our students with the skills and
knowledge necessary to succeed at their schools.
On behalf of the faculty, I would like to thank all of you
who took time out of your busy schedules to meet with your
child's teachers on Wednesday night. Getting your feedback on
your child's progress and sharing our perspective with you is an
opportunity to which we look foward.
Parents received a copy of next year's calendar in
their reregistration packet. Because the calendar is a work in
progress, an updated version will be just a quicklink away in each
week's highlights.

Dancing to the music of our student band Torahck, divrei
Torah by Rabbi Brander, Mrs. Kanner, and students, delicious
cake, and a really funny student- made video were the
highlites of a Surprise Birthday Party / Rosh Chodesh Adar
Chagiga thrown by the students and faculty. I am somewhat
unnerved by the fact that it was planned without my realizing
that something was afoot. It was somewhat embarassing but
thoroughly enjoyable.

On Wednesday evening, Parent Teacher Conferences
were well attended and well organized. A private firm
presented a College Finance Planning Seminar to
interested parents. Next year we have scheduled 2 nights of
conferences first trimester (divided alphabetically) to ensure
that even as the school grows every parent can meet with every
teacher.
Mr. Kaplan's junior classes recently did a mini American
Jewish History project in which they researched four
little-known Jews who impacted on American History during and
before the Civil War. The students had to analyze how these
men's backgrounds influenced them, and what one question they
would ask each man if they could.
This and every Friday there will be an Erev Shabbat
Flower Sale run by the junior class. A dozen roses
(available in a number of colors) are $10 dozen, $5 for half
dozen,and a single rose for $1.

| Storm Season Returns |

 Don't miss the Saturday night Doubleheader Varsity
Girls and Boys Basketball games this Motzei Shabbat at
Coral Springs Christian. Take I- 95, the Turnpike, Powerline
or Lyons Roads to Sample Road. Go west. Make a left on
Riverside, and the school is on the left. The girls play at
7:30 PM, followed by the boys at 9:00 PM.
The Boys Varsity Basketball Team played their
district rivals, Summit Christian. The Storm took a one point
lead after incredible playing by guard Bryan Lieber &
forward Hudi Moscowitz, and fantastic rebounding by center
Danny Krasna.
The Girls Varsity Basketball Team also played
Summit Christian this week. They started out strong and by the
half were up by five points. The Storm played incredible
defense in the fourth quarter, but lost the game. Good luck
next time, girfls.
Mazel tov to the Girls Soccer Team for making the
divsion playoffs, with the first game being played next
Monday, February 3, 8:00PM at Pope John Paul II in Boca on
Military Trail, north of Glades. The team made a strong
showing this past week in their loss to Wellington Christian,
2-0. Assistant captain Mia Sava, Debbie Ganz and Jennifer
Adler put forth tremendous effort in this, the last game of
the regular season. Later in the week the Storm played an
exhibition game against American Heritage. Miriam Fuchs played
her best game of the season.
The Boys Junior Varsity Team will be playing YHS'
first game against the David Posnack High School next thursday
night.

| Next Week at YHS |

 This Tuesday we will be kicking off an exciting project
which is being embarked upon by yeshiva high schools
throughout the country in solidarity with our brothers and
sisters in Israel. Students sign up to study mishnayot,
mussar, or most anything else to be a part of L'Maan Achai
(for the sake of my brethern). There will be optional shiurim
given during breakfast and lunch.
This Sunday our Chesed Committee is going to help
construct homes for Habitat for Humanity in West Palm
Beach. Kudos to Committee Chairperson Rachel Dolgow and
advisor Mrs. Ruchie Brander for organizing the program, Mr.
Adam Dobrick who is accompanying the students, the 15 students
who are going, and the other students who have already signed
up to go next time.
This Tuesday and Wednesday the students will be taking a
standardized Hebrew language exam developed by the Neta
project. Neta is a initiative sponsored by the Avi Chai
Foundation and staffed by Hebrew University in Jerusalem which
is designing textbooks and curriculum for Hebrew language in
Jewish high schools. YHS has been chosen as a test school, and
will be receiving materials and direction starting next year.
Mr. Dobrick's AP European History Class will be going to
the Renaisance Fair at Quiet Waters Park in Pompano
Beach on Thursday. The program of the day is devoted to
schools that are studying the time period.

students and faculty advisor Adam Dobrick will be
participating in Yeshiva University's Model United
Nations at the Kutschers Resort in upstate New York, which
draws 500 of the best and brightest yeshiva high school
students from throughout the US. It takes place
Sunday-Tuesday, February 9-11.
Rabbi Menachem Liebtag, whose expertise in Tanach
has become world renowned through his shiurim to American
students at post secondary programs in Israel and particularly
his web site, will be giving shiurim in school to the students
and teachers on Monday, February 10. That evening he will be
speaking at the Young Israel of Hollywood at a jointly
sponsored YHS/ Young Israel Adult Education Committee lecture.
On Wednesday, February 12, the Junior Class will
be having a fun evening starting with a barbeque at Rabbi
Spodek's house at 5:30 PM and a Scavenger Hunt at Town Center
Mall at 6:30 PM. Transportation details to follow.
The 10Y English class will be going to meet and hear
author Stephen Dubner, one of whose works they read
this year.
Sponsor your favorite teachers for a minimum of 5 cents
per pin as they bowl in the sophomore class bowlathon
fundraiser that will be taking palce on Motzei Shabbat,
February 22.
The YHS production of the musical "Annie" will take
place on the evenings of Tuesday, February 25 and Wednesday,
February 26 at the Crescent Theater in Delray Beach. Director
Liz Saddler and the entire cast and crew have been hard at
work on what promises to be an excellent performance. Ticket
prices are $25 for premium seats, $15 for adults and $10
children ages 4- 12.

| Mrs. Horowitz, Mrs. Kanner, and Mrs.
Schneider and the members of the class of 2002 shared their
experiences thus far in the school year. The teachers were
gratified to hear that the girls feel that each student was
directed to the appropriate school, and that they were well
prepared for the challenging programs in which they are
enrolled. The impact of these young women, who were our
partners in creating the school 5 years ago, will be felt by
YHS students for many years to come.
